I am glad that this monster has been named publicly. The idea that he would have been protected after murdering Alesha MacPhail made me sick. His picture is all over the news now.

What came out about the girl's own family was hardly edifying......Her dad a 26yo weed dealer with a two year relationship with a woman who is now 18, and a domestic assault report against that same girlfriend?.....That little girl didn't stand much of a chance.

Alesha didn't live with her father. She was just visiting him at his parents' home for a few weeks of the summer, possibly as part of a custody arrangement. She was primarily resident with her mother, nearly 60 miles away in Airdrie. Her father was most likely not the best father but he was a small part of her life. I know it's hard to tell from photographs but Alesha looked to be a happy, well taken care of child. Her mother was in all likelihood giving her a perfectly good life and would have continued to do so. Alesha had every chance of a good life and that was taken from her.

I didn't know about the 'it HAD TO BE one of the Syrian refugees' thing. How depressing.

Alesha MacPhail's case is horrendous and deeply shocking, but I agree with Pooley about Campbell.

I don’t see any benefit in naming him other than to satisfy the public lust for detail.

As for whether or not he is damaged, given that we practice restorative justice in this country he will receive treatment on the inside which will determine soon enough whether he has psychological issues which led him to do what he did. Either way he isn’t going to be out any time soon so details like his name are of no benefit to the public at large.

As for the post up-thread saying he won’t last long in prison, people often say this she someone is jailed for a horrific crime, and nothing ever happens to them. And it’s worth noting that everyone in prison is there for a reason, so one murderer doing in another is hardly worth celebrating.

Millimollimandi the reason why the bulger killers were given life-long anonymity is precisely because they were named when they were convicted, and so when they were released they had to be given new identities for their own protection.

The whole case is so incredibly sad, and there were sadly a lot of issues within the family as well.

And with regard to Alesha's mother. Nobody even told her, her daughter was missing until she learned about her disappearance and the discovery of a child's body on facebook. I can't imagine how the poor woman is able to go on.

I live in the area and how his name has been common knowledge since the very start. How he's survived long enough to actually end up in jail is a miracle.

Yep! I'm in the area, too. He'll be heavily guarded and not in population because you can be sure that EVERYONE in prison will know why he's there.

This is not really what the thread is about, it's just I can't understand why he (or anyone) would do that. But I agree that it is a good thing that releasing his photo and name has shown the racist commentators that it was not a refugee or a Muslim.
RIP. Flowers

Utter rubbish.

Most children growing up in similar situations to Alesha do not end up in the clutches of a violent psychopath and suffer this most unspeakable death.

I've just read online that his mom gave an interview and said he's in solitary for his own protection and he's just watching tv and playing xbox all day so he's probably depressed.

Isn't that what he did most of the time before he murdered a child? Surely the Xbox thing can't be true! Angry

You could have found out his name online in a minute or two anyway, no real reason why it was some big secret after conviction, it's not a balance of probabilities in such a case. People talk, especially here.

I'm from the West of Scotland and if my memory serves me right I'm sure Katie Hopkins tweeted something about this. Could be wrong.

Police and family members were trying to conract her mum yes she found out Alesha wasmissing on Fb but apparently she wasn't at home/answering her door or phone.

I'm not saying it was anyone's fault. Just that it's horrendous. Imagine you were a single parent, you child goes to their father for part of the summer. You take the opportunity to have a lie in/stay with friends after a night out and have your phone off. Then when you decided to have a browse on facebook that's the kind of news you learn.

Well, the alternative is that if he were in population he'd be dead . . . like Alesha. What do you expect the prison service to do? Hell, I live out here with my son who has autism we have no services due to budget cuts, so tell me what do you think the prison service is supposed to do? It's not like cuts haven't hit them, either.. I'm surprised he's got an Xbox and telly, tbh.

No, you'd be right, plenty of people not from the area speculated such BS. No one in the area did, however, because they all knew who it was. Hopkins just tweeted her usual racist shite but plenty of people outwith the area bought it. Angry

BS. They don't even live near that part of the town, the refugees.

Luke Mitchell, who cut his 14-year-old girlfriend to ribbons in Dalkeith, and the serial killers Peter Tobin and Alistair Sinclair are still alive so Campbell stands a reasonable chance as long as he's not in population.

With regard her mum not knowing, it was a very fast paced situation. If memory serves me it was only 2 1/2 hours from Alesha being reported missing to being found and her mum lived in Airdrie.

Like others said, she may not have been home or not answering her phone.

I blame the people that made it obvious on the grandmothers fb that Alesha had been found dead for her mother finding out that way.

I though it was odd he was named because isn't he connected somehow to the family? I assumed the anonymity would continue to protect others.

There's no way to 'protect others' in this case because everyone in Bute and the surrounding areas already knew who it was once he was arrested. There are more cows and sheep on that island than there are people.

Is this true? Are these type of offenders frequently murdered and we just don’t hear about it?

Was he on remand before the trial?

he wont last long in prison - child rapists/murderers rarely do. that’s not actually true though, is it? Myra Hindley, Ian Huntley, the bulger killers (although admittedly they were in a youth prison) in fact I can’t think off the top of my head of any child killers who have been killed in prison, so to make such a statement is purely speculative with no evidence to back it up.

As for comments about the mother, firstly I imagine that there’s going to be a lot of untrue speculation online given the internet is what it is, and secondly, I can’t imagine how the mother must be feeling knowing that her child is guilty of such a horrific crime. And the media need to leave the family alone tbh because everything they say will be twisted.
