To think mumsnet abbreviations...

Nearlythere1 · 10/02/2019 00:56

Am i being unreasonable to think mumsnet abbreviations are utterly moronic at best, bordering on.. i don't even know at worst. Does it not take most posters more time to look up which idiotic abbreviation they need than it would to just write it? And the sheer saccharine "D" prefix. Come on. It's laughable, and sickening. It sounds like school children talking in code, but without half the moral and emotional discrimination. Everybody is a "dear" something no matter what.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 10/02/2019 10:46

Wow op. Are you ok? Or rather Okay? You seem very very angry!

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/02/2019 10:46

Hee hee. OP enjoy your light toasting.

WatcherintheRye · 10/02/2019 10:50

It's all in the context with acronyms. Very rarely will it not be evident if a poster is posting about a boyfriend, or breastfeeding. Could be a problem for the poster who wanted to know if her boyfriend should drop his breast-feeding best friend.......

Shinyletsbebadguys · 10/02/2019 10:50

Thanks OP you have thoroughly cheered me up after a rubbish week

Including but not limited to posting moaning about abbreviations on a specifically abbreviated titled board

Not being bright enough to understand that colloquialisms are a solid part of the organic movement of linguistics and that internet term useage are simply the globalised digital version of colloquialisms by using abbreviations to denote a cultural communication

However most importantly for being ridiculous enough to get two of your own posts banned on your own thread by mumsnet

Seriously this has made me laugh

ErictheGuineaPig · 10/02/2019 10:56

Anyone else imagining the op collapsed in an exhausted, sweaty heap, sleeping off her tantrum like a toddler?!

There you go OP. Since this same question has been posted half a dozen times lately, always by stroppy new posters, perhaps it should be on the sign up form.

coppercolouredtop · 10/02/2019 11:02

I use the abbreviations mostly because it's fast.
And it's just the language that most use here, and I want to fit in and chat to people so I use the same language.

I don't think anything of it really.
If people want to type out everything in full then fine , if you don't don't, but I wouldn't have the energy to get so wound up by it .

I'd also say if it grates reading through the posts because of it maybe find a forum that uses language differently?

Not sure what other parenting forums are out there that don't use abbreviations,?

Before mn I used a tiny little forum called raising kids because I loved the special needs board there and was an amazing little community but I think they used abbreviations.
(Oh I miss rk...this place is great but so much bigger and you lose people)

Stardustinmyeyes · 10/02/2019 11:04

Thanks for the laugh op
Saw this thread earlier and commented but I didn't realise that you have had 2 posts deleted since
So funny 🤣

Dotty1970 · 10/02/2019 11:05

I completely agree with you and you started a post I was wanting to do.
It's pathetic, some of the abbreviations could be anything and how hard is it to just spell the bloody words out!
It's like a teenagers forum in that respect!

NutElla5x · 10/02/2019 11:06

I nearly started a thread on this yesterday, after getting fed up of giving myself migraines trying to decipher posts with all the DD's,DM's,DB's,DH's,DP's,DSS's and God knows how many other dearies and other pointless abbreviations we're subjected to on here. Dear God (DG to you lot) how much longer does it take to type daughter than DD,I mean really? It's immature, pointless and lazy, and while I'm at it that stupid overused biscuit emoji can get to fuck (GTF to you) too If you have no comment how about do what you love to do i.e (that abbreviation IS allowed) save time, by just not commenting?

Stardustinmyeyes · 10/02/2019 11:08

It's not mandatory to use the abbreviations. Use them or don't use them. Nobody will berate you if you choose not to.
If you think they're stupid then find a forum that doesn't use them

I can see here that it is play ground behaviour..... You have to be in the 'clique' then? New members are seen as lesser beings? 😂
For this poster I recommend that yaafdh

@Zoflorabore

FOTTFSOFATFOSM

Say what now? Confused
I got these FOTTFSOF buuuut I'm lost with ATFOSM Grin

And well OP, if you don't like it I don't suppose anyone's got a gun to your head making you be a member or read posts. Absolutely can't understand why you think it's elitist though. Can understand irritating.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 10/02/2019 11:13

I disagree op. Single letters don’t work and most ppl don’t want to be writing out everything in longhand. No one actually thinks they’re calling everyone dear, it’s just there to make clear it’s an acronym rather than a mistyped letter.

These things have grown up through the internet and MN ones are much less irritating than ones used on other forums.

At lest here if you wrote TL;DR you’d get told to fuck off!

You wan twee go to netmums where you’re not allowed to fucking swear!

So:
YABU
HTH
TIA

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:13

DOP, YANTU.

EveSaidWhat · 10/02/2019 11:14

'OP is there a reason why FFS is an acceptable acronym that you yourself are happy to use, but others being used on the internet make you so angry?'

Yes op next time please say the complete ' for fuck's sake' or else you make yourself look rather silly.

Dotty1970 · 10/02/2019 11:15

And as for the dear thing I would think that most of the posts on here relating to a relative or friend.... T for twat would be more fitting

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:15

I'm lost with ATFOSM

And then do it some more. Grin

Like the MN chicken. You are always able to fuck off that extra bit.

Stardustinmyeyes · 10/02/2019 11:17

ATFOSM
and then Fuck Off Some More

LadyRochfordsIcedGusset · 10/02/2019 11:18

Remove 6 pointless apostrophes from your post NutElla and you could have saved even more time.

Though TBF I timed it and it is actually quicker to type just DD than daughter - HTH.

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:18

For the record:

DS's DS...
BF's BF...

Not useful...

Use sis, or son, dad, friend. You save time going capitals too.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 10/02/2019 11:20

@auntiestella sociolect is the best word I’ve learnt this week!

Dotty1970 · 10/02/2019 11:20

No, when there's talk of any sort of agency, for instance social services and their many departments, or any sort of relative, no matter how distant, it's abbreviated to the point of incomprehensibility. It's stupid and dare I say elitist in some way. And wherever the "DH" thing came from, I don't care. Get a grip. Simpering on about your "dear this" and 'dear that". As somebody said above, it's so cringe. You sound like a bunch of 50s housewives with Stockholm syndrome.

can I say your funny, will you be my friendGrinGrin

MistressDeeCee · 10/02/2019 11:20

and if you want to communicate with me after I spoke to you in plain language, well then you could try moving your fingers to make a few more words too
