To think mumsnet abbreviations...

Am i being unreasonable to think mumsnet abbreviations are utterly moronic at best, bordering on.. i don't even know at worst. Does it not take most posters more time to look up which idiotic abbreviation they need than it would to just write it? And the sheer saccharine "D" prefix. Come on. It's laughable, and sickening. It sounds like school children talking in code, but without half the moral and emotional discrimination. Everybody is a "dear" something no matter what.

OP posts:

*abbreviation, not acronym. In my defence, I've not had my coffee yet. Thought I'd correct myself here to placate any early-morning pedants.

EugenesAxe · 11/02/2019 07:53

Yes I agree a lot. I go with it now but when I first joined the ‘D’ thing used to make me vomit. I don’t care if it’s ironic.

Interesting about the difference between acronyms and initialisms - I hadn’t realised.

Janedoe - I completely agree with you about ‘So’ people. You get quite a few on Pointless and I always involuntarily think ‘Cunt.’ I always sense the hackles of Richard rising too.

There is something to be said for a post that is written in decent English; I usually bow out of ones where the OP has so little knowledge of syntax, spelling or grammar, it makes it painful to read. Posters who pick up people for a small grammatical error are a bit irritating - Autocorrect often pisses about with apostrophes. Off subject but talking of Pointless, I despaired the other day at the person who was required to give a planet or constellation containing the letter ‘A’ and he said ‘Orion’s belt’. Or rather, ‘Orian’s belt’. A good thing he won’t be on Mumsnet.

mommymooo · 11/02/2019 09:05

To the people who love the abbreviations then great but not everyone knows what they all mean so does it actually really matter if we use the correct words.

Mummylife2018 · 11/02/2019 10:07

D stands for Darling not Dear @Nearlythere1

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 11/02/2019 10:09

D stands for Darling not Dear @Nearlythere1**

Mummylife2018 Actually it stands for both.

Mummylife2018 · 11/02/2019 10:11

Forum

Sorry just catching up and that 4th "forum" made me Grin

PlayerRed · 11/02/2019 12:19

Twee shit.

Hate them. Write “child”, “daughter”, “husband”, “boyfriend”, “wife”, whatever.

Sir! Yes Sir!

Abbreviations exist because they take less time. Why should the whole of mumsnet n bother to write full words for those why can't be bothered to look the abbreviations up?

When on MN, do as the MNers do.

ReaganSomerset · 11/02/2019 12:27

Urgh. That was a failure. I'll try again:

outpinked · 11/02/2019 12:29

It would be rather irritating to have to type out partner, daughter, son, children, etc etc every single time. Not a huge fan of the ‘D’ element but it does make life 10000x easier.

limpbizkit · 11/02/2019 12:33

What does HTH mean? It's been bugging me for ages

Mysterian · 11/02/2019 12:35

There's a new one from MNHQ they hope will save them a lot of typing time in the future:

THBADB = There Has Been A Data Breach.

ReaganSomerset · 11/02/2019 12:40

@limpbizkit

Either 'how the hell' or 'hope this helps' depending on context. Usually the latter on MN.

limpbizkit · 11/02/2019 12:42

Ahhh thanks @Reagan

NutElla5x · 11/02/2019 13:00

Angie169 · 11/04/2019 04:14

Can someone tell me what &amp / &amp quote means

BloodsportForAll · 11/04/2019 04:25

Angie that's when a subject bar cannot handle having '&' put in it.

I agree with a lot of the OP. It's taking me time to work out WTF people are saying, specially when some posters have really awful written English to begin with. Then there are these acronyms added into the mix. Which you can look up the meaning of, BUT someone will always mean something else to what it's written as being in the number abbreviations thread.

I use OH because back in the day that was more normal. And, because I find the 'D' prefix rather meh. But, I have started using DD/ DC etc sometimes. I made a point of not using the acronyms when I first started posting, but some of the simple ones aren't too bad.

There are acronyms I like. DBADAI, DILLIGAF, OMGWTFSTFU, PEBKAC, they make me laugh.

GoFiguire · 11/04/2019 04:41

HRTFT but YABU DOP. IIRC ODFOD is comedy gold IYSWiM. OTOH, YANBU. TBF, it can get out of control. HTH.

Deadpool2 · 11/04/2019 06:11

Hi where can you look up the abbreviations recently rejoined Mumsnet after many years away and can’t find where the abbreviations list is - I don’t use chat rooms so find it v. Confusing to crack the code but wanna try

BloodyDisgrace · 11/04/2019 10:58

I agree. It's utter crap, and especially about dear everything. And I love my husband enough to type the word "husband".

HBStowe · 11/04/2019 11:17

Sorry that my moral discrimination isn’t up to scratch.

Angie169 · 11/04/2019 22:05

BloodsportForAll ah thanks for the explanation Smile

Deadpool2 scroll to the top of this page next to where it says Talk click on the little downward arrow , that brings up a sub screen , its on there.

MooseHoose · 11/04/2019 22:42

I agree. No need to prefix everything with ‘darling’. I saw two people use DDog the other day which I really did think was ridiculous. I assume ‘dog’ doesn’t mean ‘hated dog’. It’s all just a bit twee.
