To think mumsnet abbreviations...

Nearlythere1 · 10/02/2019 00:56

Am i being unreasonable to think mumsnet abbreviations are utterly moronic at best, bordering on.. i don't even know at worst. Does it not take most posters more time to look up which idiotic abbreviation they need than it would to just write it? And the sheer saccharine "D" prefix. Come on. It's laughable, and sickening. It sounds like school children talking in code, but without half the moral and emotional discrimination. Everybody is a "dear" something no matter what.

I didn't RTFT but I really hate when people put Ddog Dnephew etc. That's NOT an abbreviation! You've just made the word longer. Twats!

It annoys me far more than it probably should. Angry

Fairenuff · 10/02/2019 11:27

I think it was all around before t'internet anyway.

DM can mean direct message

It's PM on MN.

Firstbornunicorn · 10/02/2019 11:32

Took me ages to work out what STBEXH stood for. My best guess for a while was "shit the bed ex husband" 😂

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:33

And wherever the "DH" thing came from, I don't care. Get a grip. Simpering on about your "dear this" and 'dear that". As somebody said above, it's so cringe. You sound like a bunch of 50s housewives with Stockholm syndrome.

What does it say of men who use DW, then? Or lesbians?

LadyRochfordsIcedGusset · 10/02/2019 11:33

Yep sliding into your DMs is quite a different thing on IG Grin.

explodingkitten · 10/02/2019 11:41

@Nearlythere1
What do you want to accomplish with this post? Do you seriously think that you can change the whole internet? Have you ever heard the saying : "if you can't beat them, join them"? Because you will never be able to stop it.

ketchupormayo · 10/02/2019 11:42

Completely agree I don't understand half of them!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/02/2019 11:43

I thought the D stood for damned

My bad

Angie169 · 10/02/2019 11:45

I think that a lot of the abbreviations stem from when we first had the ability to send text messages but were limited to 70 characters so shorting words and phrases was needed to be able to get your point across quickly .

if you see what i mean = 23 characters
IYSWIM = 7 characters ,
Typing H instead of DH uses less but if you were to type just H instead of DH it could look like a typo .

Butchyrestingface · 10/02/2019 11:46

Fee fi fo fum, OP is a man.

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:46

Btw, it's not really dear, it's darling.

Way better. GrinWink

LadyRochfordsIcedGusset · 10/02/2019 11:48

Context is key there Angie I.e. H has been a twunt today...

Or the STBXH, fairly self-explanatory.

Lweji · 10/02/2019 11:48

I thought the D stood for damned

Devil would be even more appropriate.

JassyRadlett · 10/02/2019 11:50

To be honest, I find it much more irritating when people use ‘cringe’ as a noun, OP.

Internet conventions I can gloss over and don’t really notice any more.

IncrediblySadToo · 10/02/2019 12:00

The D in front of H S D etc just formats in a way that makes it clear rather than simply H or D or S.

It just reads as (DH) husband, (DD) daughter etc no need to ‘read’ the ‘D’ as fear, darling, dimwit or anything else.

People who need to spend time flicking between posts and acronym explanations would probably do better to spend the time working on their comprehension skills & focussing on context 🤷🏻‍♀️

WhatNow40 · 10/02/2019 12:08

ROFL 🤣

Fairenuff · 10/02/2019 12:08

Bluelady · 10/02/2019 12:10

Completely agree. I won't use them.

JassyRadlett · 10/02/2019 12:15

Oh no, it's a verb. Ignore me

‘It’s so cringe’ is one of my pet hates. It, we, makes me cringe. Grin

BloodyHellBeryl · 10/02/2019 12:17

I don't understand most of the abbreviations used Confused

Fairenuff · 10/02/2019 12:18

How many people would write 'I'm going to electronically mail my local member of parliament to lobby the prime minister about the current state of the national health service'.

Acronyms are everywhere.

YourFly · 10/02/2019 12:20

D is darling, dahling.

Pfnb1 · 10/02/2019 12:22

Merriam Webster:
