To think mumsnet abbreviations...

Am i being unreasonable to think mumsnet abbreviations are utterly moronic at best, bordering on.. i don't even know at worst. Does it not take most posters more time to look up which idiotic abbreviation they need than it would to just write it? And the sheer saccharine "D" prefix. Come on. It's laughable, and sickening. It sounds like school children talking in code, but without half the moral and emotional discrimination. Everybody is a "dear" something no matter what.

Other normal women and mothers who want to join in but have to keep switching tabs to look up the latest ridiculous abbreviation,

^

Let's face it, it takes about a day to get the hang of.

And if you don't get it in that time we don't really want the likes of you here in this neck of the woods, really.

lboogy · 10/02/2019 02:06

What does cf mean? It's the only one I don't get
And to the op, yes yabu

Your anger seems out of proportion to the problem I have to say.

My own pet hate is abbreviations that aren't. Like Ddog. They look like a stutter. I can't say I'd summon enough ire to froth as excessively as you are here though.

Perhaps get yourself off to bed and see if you're less angry in the morning? Or take up a hobby to get the anger out - boxercise is good. Or to help you get all zen like - yoga perhaps?

artisanscotcheggs · 10/02/2019 02:19

They do me head in.

cstaff · 10/02/2019 02:26

When I started reading mumsnet first I used to have the abbreviation page open at the same time. It took me ages to get my head around them and still have to look up some of them. I make a point of not using them.

Oh OP I was teasing you!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 10/02/2019 02:31

Can I call you OP or would you prefer something else?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 10/02/2019 02:32

I mean, I can type out the words Original Poster if you want.

AGHHHH · 10/02/2019 02:37

Sickening? Hmm

Sounds like you think people are sat there with a list choosing the applicable abbreviation every time they post? No. Most people have what is called a memory which comes from something commonly known as a brain.

Most people. Not everyone.

Hth.

Nearlythere1 · 10/02/2019 02:41

Yes and the follow-up from heartstrumps of "oh you thought i was serious?! I was joking what you getting so upset about!" Another classic. How old are you seriously.

I think someone needs a sense of humour transplant.

I’m 48.

mummarosie1 · 10/02/2019 02:51

Wow, OP, this is out of proportion. I find the abbreviations irritating too, but really not enough to get so seemingly irate about it. If it bugs you that much you might need to stop using the site Hmm

Nearlythere1 · 10/02/2019 02:56

Mummarosie I'm irritated by the frankly infantile replies, the clear comments on my intelligence, the "Yeah well the rest of us can do it' etc etc. The point is it's needless and elitist I think, and also just so so dated. Dear husband? Ffs.

The entire forum centres around acronyms. If you hate it so much then log out and set up your own forum. You won't find a forum that doesn't use them.

AGHHHH · 10/02/2019 03:03

Forum.

ICJump · 10/02/2019 03:04

Harry my point is the criticism of mumsnet and mumsnet users is misdirected. The abbreviations are internet usage. The OP would be better if starting a blog to complain about the internet

budgetneeded · 10/02/2019 03:09

wow, i'd heard about the abbreviations years before i discovered mn.
it's not like any of them are challenging? very common on other mother/baby forums.

TildaTurnip · 10/02/2019 03:10

I hate them too and don’t see them used so prolifically anywhere else on the Internet. Though I don’t mind OP and PP.

It is all the Ds that are annoying. Especially when added to a word because the full word is needed, e.g. DNephew or DGodparent.

I particularly dislike HTH and DFOD (or worse DFODTTFSOBTFOSM). So patronising.

PRoseLegend · 10/02/2019 03:15

DH, DD, DS, and OP are in use pretty much all across the internet on forums.
Mumsnet has some unique ones though... I still don't know what CF means. Cheeky Fer? Cluster Feeding? Cluster Fer?
AIBU and Yabu/Yanbu took a while for me to figure out.

And BF can mean breastfeeding or boyfriend, DM can mean direct message or dear mother... Is there a list somewhere? That would be really helpful to newcomers.

DramaAlpaca · 10/02/2019 03:22

All internet forums have their own conventions. This might not be the forum for you, OP.

LuckyLou7 · 10/02/2019 03:25

Oh fabulous, another thread moaning about abbreviations on Mumsnet.

DoctorTwo · 10/02/2019 03:40

I've got no problems with the acronyms, neither do I have a problem with those who don't like them.

I suppose I'm saying opinions are like arseholes. Everybody has one and they all stink except your own.
