To think mumsnet abbreviations...

Nearlythere1 · 10/02/2019 00:56

Am i being unreasonable to think mumsnet abbreviations are utterly moronic at best, bordering on.. i don't even know at worst. Does it not take most posters more time to look up which idiotic abbreviation they need than it would to just write it? And the sheer saccharine "D" prefix. Come on. It's laughable, and sickening. It sounds like school children talking in code, but without half the moral and emotional discrimination. Everybody is a "dear" something no matter what.

OP posts:
WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 10/02/2019 09:03

You have three choices OP:

• Continue to whine, moan and bitch about something you can’t change across the entirety of the internet that goes back decades

• Deal with it and stop embarrassing yourself

• Send your router back to your internet provider

I would most certainly recommend the last one if something so small is making you so angry.

Zoflorabore · 10/02/2019 09:16

I remember the shame as a newbie back
In 2014 and asking what
FOTTFSOFATFOSM meant.
That was eye opening!

MrsRyan15 · 10/02/2019 09:16

The point is it's needless and elitist I think, and also just so so dated. Dear husband? Ffs.

OP is there a reason why FFS is an acceptable acronym that you yourself are happy to use, but others being used on the internet make you so angry?

Zoflorabore · 10/02/2019 09:16

Actually think I've added an extra letter by mistake in my excitement....

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 10/02/2019 09:18

Ffs bored of these threads. Just de reg if it bugs you so much.

Obloodyhell · 10/02/2019 09:25

Ffs. - hilarious! OP has no sense or irony Grin

NewNameForHelpPlease · 10/02/2019 09:44

I think they’re a hangover from the days where the majority of users were in desktop. DD was quicker to type than daughter. Now most of us only need to type ‘dau’ and the phone does the rest, but once something’d stuck it’s hard to shift it.

I don’t like or use the abbreviations personally, but as long as I know what they mean I won’t be getting that stressed over them. The only thing that annoys me is when people invent new variations that almost deliberately make posts hard to understand. For example, I saw a post a while back referring to ‘STBDBIL’. Was it really easier to type that than ‘my fiancé’s brother’?

whatswithtodaytoday · 10/02/2019 09:49

I always read 'DH' as 'Dear Heart', said in a plummy accent. It makes for an amusing read when someone's complaining about their DH 😁

MeetJoeTurquoise · 10/02/2019 09:56

Gosh it's been all of a week since we've had this very subject raised.

Its laughable, and sickening No, that poor child that died in the footwell of a car when the seat was pushed back was sickening but not your rather pathetic and whiney rant.

And don't not com0lain about something and then put ffs in one of your comments.

Romanov · 10/02/2019 10:12

laughable...saccharine.....simpering.... bunch of 50s housewives with Stockholm syndrome.....frankly infantile....
I bet you're fun at parties @Nearlythere1 not sure how its elitist and all the other things you said

@PRoseLegend
Mumsnet has some unique ones though... I still don't know what CF means. Cheeky Fer? Cluster Feeding? Cluster Fer?
AIBU and Yabu/Yanbu took a while for me to figure out.
And BF can mean breastfeeding or boyfriend, DM can mean direct message or dear mother... Is there a list somewhere? That would be really helpful to newcomers.

its all about context
My cluster feeding neighbour has parked in my drive
I went out clubbing with my breast feeding who shagged my gardener
I'll send you a dear mother so we can talk offline?

yes, sometimes its not 100% clear, but you can normally work it out

TheDarkPassenger · 10/02/2019 10:16

The ones that get me are
Ds meaning dear son or dear sister. Sometimes I have to go back read it all again because I read it as the ops son
Df meaning dear father or dear fiancé
Dgf dear grandfather or dear godfather
And then people who put dh then proceed to tell us why he is most certainly not ‘dear’

recrudescence · 10/02/2019 10:19

If there was an expectation or pressure from others to use them then I could sympathise with the OP’s irritation. However, as far as I can see, nobody cares if you do or you don’t.

Mysterian · 10/02/2019 10:23

What I don't understand is how you'll get deleted for telling somebody to fuck off, but you won't if you say ODFOD. (Oh do fuck off dear).

Cornettoninja · 10/02/2019 10:25

Anywhere on the internet you find people ‘chatting’ you’re going to find abbreviations. It’s just quicker. I don’t like ‘san pro’ but use it on here because I can’t be arsed to write out sanitary protection.

It’s sad that your comprehension is stunted to the point you can’t enjoy the forum you clearly wish to be part of but maybe internet chatting isn’t for you.

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/02/2019 10:26

I'm imagining the OP sat in a Lineakers bar somewhere in the Canaries, moaning about the Spanish speaking Spanish and asking where she can get a full English.

00Sassy · 10/02/2019 10:28

Posted in ‘AIBU’ ... FFS

reallybadidea · 10/02/2019 10:29

@Nearlythere1

Where do you stand on 'hubs/hubby's, 'little man', 'tots' etc?

if you had used abreviations, your posts would have taken 50% less time to post :-)

AngelaStorm73 · 10/02/2019 10:36

I like the abbreviations
Shame I can't use them irl ffs although I often nearly do
I'm still waiting for the day someone texts back "what does DD mean?" Shock

Cornettoninja · 10/02/2019 10:36

Where do you stand on 'hubs/hubby's, 'little man', 'tots' etc

Aaarrrrggghhhh! Grin

By the way, surely you mean et cetera (I got you original poster, I know you struggle with abbreviations)

bialystockandbloom · 10/02/2019 10:39

Yeah but if we didn't have DH we'd have 'hubby' everywhere. Or 'other half' which really is twee. IMHO Wink

On the other hand OP you could just accept MN isn't for you. There's a flouncer's corner topic. We'll cope without you.

LadyRochfordsIcedGusset · 10/02/2019 10:40

I always thought the 'D' prefix was a bit tongue-in-cheek. And I like how you can drop it when 'H' is pissing you off.

Cornettoninja · 10/02/2019 10:44

Out of curiosity I wondered whether a Latin abbreviation would be more acceptable and google tells me darling husband is amica virum. Is AV more acceptable? Do you think it’ll catch on?

HarryTheSteppenwolf · 10/02/2019 10:44

I've got no problems with the acronyms
Nobody is talking about acronyms. The thread is about abbreviations. They are not the same thing.
