Recently got into reading again and want to ask for suggestions!

I've just finished The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena after it being recommended by a friend.

Needless to say I was so disappointed with the ending Sad

TIA

The Secret History by Donna Tartt is one of my favourites. Also Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner.

Soubriquet · 03/02/2019 18:06

I mostly read young adult/teen fiction

I love court of thorn and roses by Sarah J Maas and the throne of glass series by the same author

Well worth looking into if you’re into that sort of thing

Lisbon · 03/02/2019 18:07

"100 Years of Solitude" by Gabriel G. Marquez

"Blindness" Jose Saramago

PG Wodehouse comforts me through rough patches

squashyhat · 03/02/2019 18:09

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/02/2019 18:11

Not my favourite of all time but in the last few years Life after life by Kate Atkinson and The Snow Child spring to mind as ones I've enjoyed.

mynellie · 03/02/2019 18:11

Something in the water by Catherine Steadman I loved it a real twist and turn thriller

SlatternIsTrying · 03/02/2019 18:12

Riders and Rivals - Jilly Cooper.

Lowers tone but they are gooooood.

Lovingbenidorm · 03/02/2019 18:12

Anything written by Terry Pratchett
You will thank me!

KittiKat · 03/02/2019 18:12

The Kite Runner.

Gudgyx · 03/02/2019 18:12

Depends what you like. I love crime thriller books, been off work for 8 weeks and managed to read every single Karen Rose book via kindle (except the new one, because I grudge paying £10 for a book I can’t physically hold. Although mid writing this I thought I’d check and I’ve bought 20 books at £4/5 each!!!! I’m in shock!)

Martina Coles early stuff is good if you like that kind of thing, recent years her books are becoming a bit repetitive though.

Up for recommendations for crime thrillers on kindle unlimited if anyone has any, can borrow some titles for free on that! Think I’ll need to stick to free from now on 🙈

chxm19 · 03/02/2019 18:13

@mynellie oooh thanks, sounds good!

Definitely the type of genre I like to read

My favourite book ever is The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
I've re read so many times. Don't go by the film. That was shite

FigandVanilla · 03/02/2019 18:13

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

The Hannibal lecter series by Thomas harris. Start with red dragon.

The eleventh commandment by Jeffrey archer.

Odd Thomas by Dean koontz

Surprisingly, The Host by Stephenie Meyer (twilight author) not my usual kind of book but is a really good read.

Cornettoninja · 03/02/2019 18:14

I loved wild swans by Jung Chang, it’s the biography of her grandmother, mother and herself. It’s absorbing and covers fascinating points in China’s history, reminds me, I must get a new copy since mines gone missing since moving.

cardibach · 03/02/2019 18:15

‘The Bone People’ by Keri Hulme
Cant really describe it by genre. It’s awesome. But don’t get put off by the beginning which is very confusing. Keep going.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 03/02/2019 18:16

Another one for 100 years of Solitude.

For something a bit lighter I loved Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and the prequel Little Altars Everywhere.

I also like Nancy Mitford's In the Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate

Non fiction wise, Stuart Maconie's books are very good

HalfBloodPrincess · 03/02/2019 18:16

Good crime writers - Harlen Coben, Linwood Barclay, Karin Slaughter, Mo Hayder, Mark Billingham, Mark gimenz

Floralhousecoat · 03/02/2019 18:17

One book that's stayed with me is Snow falling on cedars. By David Guterson. Set during the war.

War. Murder. Mystery. Romance. It's got it all. Plus a recipe (sort of) for a soup that sounds gorgeously nourishing and wintry.
I've never been able to recreate it.

Ploppymoodypants · 03/02/2019 18:17

A thousand splendid suns, by the same author as The Kite Runner. Amazing and has stayed with me forever.

For light hearted agree with Jilly Cooper, Riders and Rivals. At her finest with these too.

Harry Potter books are my go to comfort reads and I never tire of them. (Books not films).

CantWaitToRetire · 03/02/2019 18:18

11/22/63 by Stephen King. I've read it a few times and will without doubt read it again.

SequinsDress · 03/02/2019 18:20

Handmaid's Tale

Oryx and Crake (and rest of the trilogy)
