Recently got into reading again and want to ask for suggestions!

I've just finished The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena after it being recommended by a friend.

Needless to say I was so disappointed with the ending Sad

TIA

My favourite all time books are The Grapes of Wrath, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and All Quiet On The Western Front.
I also really like the authors Liz Nugent, Sabine Durrant and Peter Swanson. Liz Nugent's Lying in Wait is a really great, if unsettling, read.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 03/02/2019 21:18

A Thousand Splendid suns
The Kite Runner
The heart's invisible furies
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

We need to talk about Kevin

This is probably my top five.

If you like thrillers OP, Chalk man is brilliant, as is anything by Luanne Moriarty.

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

I read this in my late teens, not sure why it was so good but I found it fantastic. I really should read it again 20 years later!

StepAwayFromGoogle · 03/02/2019 21:48

The Secret History by Donna Tartt by a country mile.

Petalflowers · 03/02/2019 21:50

@soubriquet I’m super interested in the young adult/ teen dystopian fiction (I haven’t really mentally progressed from 14 years old.
I recently enjoyed the Trudy Canavan Series Black Magician Trilogy, the Graceling series, Ready player one, Victoria Aveyard Red Queen trilogy but am ALWAYS on the lookout for inspiration! Have also enjoyed done Hunger Games, Uglies, The Selection, Divergent, Delirium, and some over popular ones but really love recommendations

DotOnTheHorizon · 03/02/2019 22:11

Catch-22 and Cold Comfort Farm - both fabulous and funny.

I do occasionally read books with titles that start with a letter other than C 😂

SuperStellaElla · 03/02/2019 22:13

I forgot Life after Life - live that book and pretty much anything by Kate Atkinson

Graphista · 03/02/2019 22:14

Funnily enough if you like twists I'd recommend

Jeffrey archer - a twist in the tale is a series of short stories all with a twist. A quiver full of arrows is also fun - as short stories maybe save for early labour/feeding times.

Jeffrey archer - not a penny more, not a penny less - especially if you like tv shows like hustle or white collar

Can't stand his politics but cracking storyteller!

Speaking of kate Atkinson - behind the scenes at the museum has a twist too.

On Virginia Andrews stick to the ones actually written by her.
My sweet audrina has the biggest twist but needs a trigger warning which could spoil I guess, to a degree, a bit shut up Graphista

Before I go to sleep - another one with a twist

Early Ruth rendell often had a twist too

If you don't know it, the classic one of a twist/crime book is of course the body in the library - Agatha Christie, a lesser known one of hers is Hercule poirots Christmas.

I'm a huge Marian Keyes fan I think she writes large families & humour very well. Particular favourites are the Walsh family novels.

Rachel's holiday
Angels
Anybody out there?
Mystery of mercy close

They have their own little twists

Crime I also like sue grafton which a few have twists there too. Ditto Tess geritsen.

The girl with the dragon tattoo - again if you don't already know the twist it's a cracker.

But purely favourite book ever? Pride & prejudice. Have read it umpteen times and still love it (and it does have a wee tiny twist in it)

runningtogetskinny · 03/02/2019 22:33

The heart's invisible Furies - best book I've read in ages!
