Recently got into reading again and want to ask for suggestions!

I've just finished The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena after it being recommended by a friend.

Needless to say I was so disappointed with the ending Sad

TIA

Just finished the 7 deaths if evelyn hardcastle. Gripping and clever.

MaudebeGonne · 03/02/2019 19:18

Loads of Margaret Atwood is brilliant, but Alias Grace is my favorite. The Stand by Stephen King, but again, I love loads of his books. The best crime thrillers I have read recently are the Meave Kerrigan series by Jane Casey. If you want a bit of real life crime, Happy Like Murderers by Gordan Burn is an excellent insight into Fred and Rose West's reign of seedy terror. Barbara Kingsolver also writes fantastic tales - currently reading her latest Unsheltered and loving it so far. The Shipping News by Annie Proulx is very poignant and beautiful.

Another one for Goldfinch. Stunning book that stays with you. Superb read.

BillyAndTheSillies · 03/02/2019 19:20

A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali by Gill Courtemanche and Z for Zelda by Therese Anne Fowler. Both very different books, the Sunday book I've only read once but it's stuck with me. Z for Zelda I often read two or three times a year.

The Kite Runner
A thousand splendid suns
Atonement - Ian McEwan
A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry

Life after life by Kate Atkinson
The light between oceans by M.L Stedman
The thirteenth tale by Diane Setterfield
The house at Riverton, the forgotten garden, the secret keeper, the lake house all by Kate Morton

Linnet · 03/02/2019 19:38

Oh and leaving time by Jodi Piccoult was really good too

Helix1244 · 03/02/2019 19:43

Saraandduck i feel like i live in Stepford. The kids are so well behaved except mine it is like they are replaced by aliens...

Lobsterquadrille2 · 03/02/2019 19:43

East of Eden
Rebecca
Cold Comfort Farm

Lobsterquadrille2 · 03/02/2019 19:44

Birdsong

AmIAWeed · 03/02/2019 19:45

When god was a rabbit is without doubt my favourite book. Even after reading it multiple times it can make me laugh and bring a tear to my eye.
It feels like a genuine portrayal of a family, one I would have loved not because of them being lucky/wealthy but because love seems to shine through despite many difficult times and harsh topics featured

My grandmother sends her regards and apologises

Grumpbum123 · 03/02/2019 19:47

The tattooist of auschwitz was excellent and humbling

Lobsterquadrille2 · 03/02/2019 19:48

Gone with the wind (hated the film)
A short History of Motorbikes in Ukrainian

I'll stop now,

Ribbonsonabox · 03/02/2019 19:50

My favourite books are:
Steppenwolf
The Tin Drum
Enduring Love
We Have Always Lived in the Castle
Cosmos
The Lighthouse (Alison Moore)
My Cousin Rachel
Auto Da Fe
The Little Stranger
Jane Eyre
The Third Policeman
The House of Mirth
Uncle Silas
Gormenghast trilogy

And I just read The Silent Companions and found it really scary (which I enjoy!) Although its ending doesn't do it justice imo.
I also love Susan Hill, non of its life changing but it's good fun and engaging! Ditto Mary Stewart!

Anjelika · 03/02/2019 19:50

I Let You Go by Claire Macintosh and Into the Darkest corner by Elizabeth Haines. I love a psychological thriller and these 2 stood out for me.

iklboo · 03/02/2019 19:51

The Silent Companions and The Corset - both by Laura Purcell. DH devoured them as well.

Houseonahill · 03/02/2019 19:54

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

It's one of the few books I can read again and again and find something new every time.

FuckYouRichardParker · 03/02/2019 20:04

Olympus and Ilium by Dan Simmons, science fiction books about the Trojan War recreated in the future. Very clever.

notsmartenough · 03/02/2019 20:04

I love crime novels and some of my favourite authors have been mentioned already. Nicci French, Ann Cleeves, Elly Griffiths, Tania Carver, Chris Carter, Val McDermid, Peter Robinson and Robert Goddard are also very good.

Moominfan · 03/02/2019 20:11

Loved battle royale. Gold tier dystopia for me.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 03/02/2019 20:11

Midnight’s Children

Jsmith99 · 03/02/2019 20:23

Animal Farm by George Orwell. As relevant to Venezuela in 2019 as it was to the USSR in the 1940s and China in the 1960s. When political ideology becomes more important than people the inevitable result is totalitarian dictatorship, and it always will be.

I also hugely enjoyed Robert Harris’ outstanding alternative history novel Fatherland.

Armi · 03/02/2019 20:36

Jane Eyre is a fantastic read.

I loved, love, love Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel but I know it isn’t to everyone’s taste.
