Recently got into reading again and want to ask for suggestions!

I've just finished The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena after it being recommended by a friend.

Needless to say I was so disappointed with the ending Sad

TIA

Thanks @dontfundhate I will give them a try

Neverender · 03/02/2019 18:44

Agree with HalfBloodPrincess The Host is incredible.

Also, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. My favourite book ever.

Lorddenning1 · 03/02/2019 18:46

@AnaVanda I was reading this thinking I can't believe no one has said the Stand by Steven King, I love this book :)

SovietKitsch · 03/02/2019 18:50

Recently read Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore. Just beautifully written and even though we’re fantastical elements to it, it was just so true. If that makes sense!

xTinkerhellx · 03/02/2019 18:51

1984

The Five People you meet in Heaven

The Book Thief.

And this one is actually a kids book, but I've adored it as both a child and adult...Ballet Shoes.

Creas35 · 03/02/2019 18:52

Gone Girl - just didn’t expect it - haven’t watched the movie. Also The Long Walk which is by Stephen King but under a different name x

Sopsar · 03/02/2019 18:53

anything by Ann Tyler

chxm19 · 03/02/2019 18:55

Thank you everyone, some really good suggestions here!

I'm sure I won't be bored on mat leave for that's for sure..

vampirethriller · 03/02/2019 18:56

11:22:63 by Stephen King
The Crimson Petal and The White, Michel Faber
Daniel O thunder, Ian Weir

And I love a bit of Jilly Cooper, especially The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous

NC4Now · 03/02/2019 18:57

For classics: Clockwork Orange blew me away.
Nymphomation by Jeff Noon.
1984
Brave New World

Also, The Lovely Bones by Alice Seebold.

Gillian McAllister books are good for a quick, gripping page turner. Anything you say was my favourite.

I fly through Leanne Moriarty books- favourite are The Husband’s Secret or Big Little Lies.

The Missing by CL Taylor is another great book from the bestsellers.

Tiredemma · 03/02/2019 18:57

A thousand splendid suns

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 03/02/2019 18:59

Immortality by Milan Kundera

It was filled with the most beautiful language imaginable. I wish I could read Czech though, so I could get the full effect. Same goes with Kafka. I have a friend whose wife is German and she said that reading his work in German is a whole other level than in English. Obvious, of course. But, it sure would be nice! Smile

Helix1244 · 03/02/2019 18:59

19lotie and windy me too. I also like the Angel ones and Troy.
V Andrews thread?

Swishswish26 · 03/02/2019 19:00

Have you read her latest book- An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena? I literally could not put it down.

I also loved Lovely Bones but didn’t like the ending.

chxm19 · 03/02/2019 19:02

@Swishswish26 I haven't actually!

The couple next door was good but I just feel the ending was a total let down.

I'll look at her other books though

Shogun by James Clavell
Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres (the first 40 pages are hard going but if you persevere it's a fantastic story, I cried)
For a bit of light relief :
The Diary of a Nobody by Weedon Grossmith (The author of Adrian Mole had definitely read this book and it's really funny)
The Convenient Marriage by Georgette Heyer (light fluffy romance but so witty and well written)
Also agree with Assassin's Apprentice series by Robin Hobb.

Sarahandduck18 · 03/02/2019 19:05

The stepford wives.

I like that it only takes an afternoon to read and is haunting and stays with you and is just as relevant now as when it was written,

Pretamum · 03/02/2019 19:06

The Secret History and Goldfinch, both by Donna Tartt are my favourites - Secret History is the one book I always recommend if a friend is looking for a good book.

Also Stephen Kings The Stand.

And I love love love Dr Henry Marsh's book Do No Harm - all about a career in brain surgery, but you don't have to know anything about medicine to absolutely love it. Got me into medical memoirs - another good one is This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/02/2019 19:08

The secret history

Brideshead revisted

A kind of loving

Oryx and crake

A little life

No longer at ease

MeTigger · 03/02/2019 19:11

All the Adrian Mole books

Wilbur Smith - the Egyptian series

All of the Touch of Frost books

MeTigger · 03/02/2019 19:13

Agree with pp, the early scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwall are superb

Trial and Retribution series and Prime suspect series by Lynda La Plant

windydoggy · 03/02/2019 19:14

@Helix1244 ooh yes forgot about the Angel collection, All good books and easy to read but people seemed to have a very hard life .
Think I may search for V Andrews on kindle and read again .

littlepeas · 03/02/2019 19:15

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

candlefloozy · 03/02/2019 19:16

I loved my sisters keep by Jodi picoult. Nothing like the film!

Mojitomogul · 03/02/2019 19:16

I love the way liane morietty writes, Big Little Lies was such a good read!!! Now its a series with nicole Kidman and reese witherspoon, also i really enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, i found it quite unputdownable and thought provoking without being too heavy.
