To think that some pizza flavours are just unacceptable

Probably gonna get flamed but I have stayed silent long enough on this inflammatory topic and I'm prepared to go down with my ship.

Pizza in it's truest form is just a thin dough with a tomato base made from San Marzano tomatoes topped with mozzarella.

BBQ sauce. Hoi sin. Sweet chilli. Chip shop curry. Chipotle. Masala. Mango chutney. Bechamel sauce.

these are all things that, while delightful in their own context, are heinous on a pizza

Pizza purists unite - what is the worst pizza combo you've had?

Pizza blasphemers don't come @ me bitchez.

Only ham and pineapple
Or just bbq sauce
Chicken on pizza? Meh

Frosty66611 · 26/01/2019 14:33

I once went to a strange cafe where they had a pizza with marmite and Stilton toppings :-(

WingMirrorSpider · 26/01/2019 14:35

We go to Italy a lot (some of dh’s family live there) and often go out for pizza. The base is always the thin type but they do have lots of other toppings apart from the original margarita one. But the toppings are mainly prosciutto (cotto and crudo), mushrooms, spicy sausage (I can’t remember if they call it pepperoni or if it’s something similar), olives and occasionally artichokes or another type of cheese. They don’t do chicken, pineapple or bbq sauce. I think that’s come from the American style deep pan Chicago pizzas which have been around for a while too.

Each to their own I guess. That Swedish one sounds an abomination though 🤢

KittyVonCatsworth · 26/01/2019 14:35

Pepperoni, spicy beef, jalapeno and pineapple on a BbQ base. Or tuna and anchovies. They are my pizzas, they rock, they're wrong and I don't care 😝😂

BentNeckLady · 26/01/2019 14:36

When I went to Rome (!) I was served pizza with sausage and chips on it Biscuit.

Italians are even bastardising their own food.

CrabbityRabbit · 26/01/2019 14:37

I used to really like a proper dirty pizza from a crap takeaway with donner meat on top. Perfect when drunk and/or hungover.

BikeRunSki · 26/01/2019 14:39

I nearly had to LTB when dhwrnt dhoooibgbon our first night on an s/c holiday (only in Scotland) and returned with a chicken tikka pizza. When I have him a very hard stare he said “you could take the chicken off” (I don’t eat meat), followed by “you always say margarita is boring”. (Not true, what imobjrct yonisvreally cheao plain cheese pizza, which is essentially cheese on toast).

Anyway, I picked the chicken off as it was very late and we were ravenous. It was still revolting. I didn’t finish it.

I like cheese/veg on a pizza. I usually add olives and mushrooms to a Margarita, but there is a takeaway never us that dies an aubergine and feta pizza which is amazing. Other cuisines are fine, but not on pizza.

ChrisPrattsFace · 26/01/2019 14:43

My local Indian does pizzas. Chicken korma pizza, or a tikka pizza is glorious.
Not even ashamed.

chemenger · 26/01/2019 14:43

I work with several Italians. We often have pizza brought in for lunch. We have now learned that only they should order it and only from the place that is run by Italians. Sometimes we are permitted chicken but they disapprove. (Lighthearted, they are not tyrants just loudly opinionated about pizza).

JasperKarat · 26/01/2019 14:43

I think I'm a bit like you OP, really thin crust, small amount of tomato (not lashings of sweet synthetic pasty stuff) mozzarella maybe a little fresh basil at the end. If I'm going to have a topping some fresh thinly sliced mushrooms with garlic is my go to.
DH on the other hand is a pizza monster, the more meats the better and boy does he love BBQ sauce on the base. Sometimes I threaten to LTB.

CatHopeful · 26/01/2019 14:44

I agree with all of your pizza 'sins' OP. I have an irrational dislike of chicken on pizza.

SuperHeroGirl · 26/01/2019 14:44

I had the most amazing pizza in Venice this year. Goats cheese, pine nuts and honey! I'm dribbling thinking about it!

chemenger · 26/01/2019 14:44

IVe noticed here in the US that pizza type things are often called “flatbread” which avoids the issue.

wellhonestly · 26/01/2019 14:45

I've had garlic king prawns on a pizza.
I've had haggis on a pizza.

Both were lush.

SauvignonBlanche · 26/01/2019 14:48

No chicken or fruit for me thank you.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/01/2019 14:50

Thin crust, tomato, mozzarella, anchovies and olives.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/01/2019 14:51

Each to their own I guess. I am partial to bbq sauce on a pizza, but pineapple is just so wrong! I mean hot pineapple, whats wrong with you people??

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 14:53

Seafood pizza is so good. A local Italian does an amazing one with mussels, squid and garlic king prawns. I always have if with mozzarella much to the horror of some Italians.

mytieisascarf · 26/01/2019 14:53

Chicken curry pizza - AMAZING! Especially with a beer when hungover!

TornFromTheInside · 26/01/2019 14:57

I love the 'No pizza should have fruit on it' ...

What the hell is a tomato then?

SouthwarkSkaters · 26/01/2019 14:58

I suggest purists avoid pizza places in Brazil Grin - they do sweet pizzas. Strawberry and white choc, guava and cheese, banana and cinnamon, Nutella... it’s quite nice actually.

FangTasticBeast · 26/01/2019 14:58

Pineapple all the way

neddle · 26/01/2019 14:59

I wonder if you lot can expand on the song my friend and I started to write some years ago.

I opened with “Who puts parsley on a pizza?”
And he added “Who eats anchovies at all?”

I’m sure there’s a great many more lyrics to add to this, but we’ve never come up with any more.

I think the tune is along the lines of that school hymn about God making everything.

AnnaL82 · 26/01/2019 15:00

@BentNeckLady I’m 37, grew up in Italy and pizza topped with sausage and chips was already around in my childhood , it’s intended for kids and used to be my fave!

Chicken, BBQ sauce, pineapple etc are American style things which don’t exist there. Since living in the UK I’m much more tolerant, I loudly disapprove pineapple but that’s because I hate sweet n sour tastes in general.

DuggeesWoggle · 26/01/2019 15:03

Thinnish crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushroom, prosciutto, with blue cheese and mascarpone or ricotta dotted on. Rocket salad alongside. Yum.
