People that have been in Jail.

I was just reading another thread about someone who had been in jail and was surprised by the negativity.

It wasn't mentioned what he had been in for or anything, it just assumed he was a bad person.

I've been inside twice in my youth, but I wouldn't consider myself a bad person. I made mistakes when I was younger but it doesn't dictate who I am now.

AIBU in thinking people automatically assume your bad because you've done time?

YANBU OP. Everyone makes mistakes, and I've read about people falsely accused.

It wasn’t too long ago people were sent to prison for being homosexual or for being a conscience objector

Well it kind of was. 52 years since homosexuality was legalised and 74 years since the end of WW2.

*@evaperonspoodle Your's is the stand out post!!

That's absolutely shocking and a complete indictment of our society*

I would never, ever have believed this if I hadn't seen it myself (For the poster who asked it was the prison warden who told me, not the prisoners) Single mothers who couldn't afford the £1000 TV license penalty. Most of them had questionable MH issues before coming to prison, but the separation from their children made it spiral down hill very fast and there was a very disturbing prevalence of self harm and suicide attempts.

That's very odd, because the stats from prisons and the evidence of people working in the prison service shows that women self harm but rarely commit suicide, whereas men rarely self harm but are 4 times more likely to commit suicide.

evaperonspoodle · 22/01/2019 13:50

Craft1905 no idea about the stats, but the week before I was there a young woman hanged herself. She had grown up in care after being removed from her mother who pimped her out to fund her drug habit until she was about 12. Sadly the legacy of her past was just too much for her to deal with.

@evaperonspoodle how horribly tragic. 12 How the hell did she slip through the net for so long? Sad

Yep, this is right. Although the levels of self harm I've witnessed in female estates also seem to be lower. I haven't sutured anyone since May in female estates, whereas it was a weekly occurrence when I worked in male estates.

Arson is dangerous and kills people. It also destroys crops, animals, wildlife and the environment. I'm glad your dad got sent to prison. He deserved it.
