To think Brexit could make the country safer with better punishments

Disclosure, I voted remain but today this story broke the camel's back as it were:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6608935/Ex-Westminster-public-schoolboy-strapped-naked-frame-caned-24-times.html#article-6608935

A British lad dealt drugs to his friends while in Singapore and now he's going to get 24 lashes while tied down. People in the comments say that Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world because people there are scared of the effective punishments.

So I'm starting to think one side benefit of leaving the EU is that we won't have to explain ourselves to anyone else if we decide to reintroduce similarly effective punishments?

Obviously people would need to support it but polls up until recently showed a slim majority in the UK supporting the death penalty for certain criminals so we could hold a referendum on these types of things.

Do more research. Harsher punishment does not equal a safer country.

CrochetBug · 19/01/2019 10:15

No thank you. I don't want to live in a country with that kind of punishment.

LionsTeeth · 19/01/2019 10:15

Are you really supporting the introduction of whipping as a punishment in this country? ShockConfused

CurtainsOpen · 19/01/2019 10:16

Nah.

TerriTummyTowels · 19/01/2019 10:17

If you look at the comments on the daily mail the people supporting this view point are being up voted the most so there must be an appetite for it. I would support harsher physical punishments for certain types of criminal yes, like child related crimes or murder with knives.

No, harsher punishment doesn't reduce crime. Just look at the US - it has the death penalty and a far higher murder rate than the UK.

What does reduce crime is a belief that you're going to be caught - if you don't think you're going to be caught, the punishment is irrelevant as you're not going to receive it.

Plus I wouldn't want to live in a country with corporal or capital punishment.

As if comments on the daily mail are anything to go by!!

Seriously, shall we start chopping hands off of shoplifters whilst we're at it, or is it just whipping people that floats your boast??

DarienGap · 19/01/2019 10:21

Does USA still have the 3 strikes and you're out system in certain states?

FishCanFly · 19/01/2019 10:22

yay, bring back public hanging. effective punishment + entertainment for the masses Grin

SaucyJack · 19/01/2019 10:23

No, and it’s a particularly poor example of a crime that deserves corporal punishment to be brought back IMO.

One bloke passing on Class As to a few consenting adult friends.

Do you have any idea how many 100s of 1000s of people would end up being whipped?

At least do the murderers/rapists/child abusers first.

userschmoozer · 19/01/2019 10:23

The USA has the death penalty, look how safe it has made the country /s

Bravo, an outstanding achievement

TerriTummyTowels · 19/01/2019 10:25

I do agree with that. It's more the effective punishment I was looking at rather than his crime. Although in this boys case I think he should get the lashes but not the 20 year sentence too. He wouldn't do it again

OP posts:
Neolara · 19/01/2019 10:27

Wasn't there a piece of research last year that showed a very high correlation between people who voted leave and people who supported the death penalty? OP - you may be onto something.

KingBobra · 19/01/2019 10:28

so we could hold a referendum on these types of things

Mmm, that's worked out really well for us all so far...

How are you defining "safer"? Have you considered all other options, like, I don't know, better funding for the police?

NicolaStart · 19/01/2019 10:30

OP: birching people in tnis country was abolished long before we joined even the Common Market.

When thieves got their hands chopped off for nicking loaves of bread and sheep stealers were hung, they still did it.

Grimbles · 19/01/2019 10:31

'better' punishment Hmm

Somerville · 19/01/2019 10:32

Tory Brexiteers already hold Singapore up as their future economic model. So now there is support for their repressive social policies too? It is an authoritarian country which no-one with half a brain or an inclination towards democracy should hold up as a good example of anything.

BejamNostalgia · 19/01/2019 10:33

I would much prefer more spending on better mental health provision, drug rehabilitation and affordable housing. All of these would do much more to lower crime rates than whipping people.

onalongsabbatical · 19/01/2019 10:45

Yes let's all crack on back to the middle ages and put people in the stocks for stealing a loaf of bread and the world will magically become a wonderful safe place.
Or we could, you know, make some fucking human progress.

ISdads · 19/01/2019 10:51

Can't you just post this shit on the dm comments? Why infect mumsnet with mindless rightwing stupidity?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 19/01/2019 10:51

We stopped all that barbaric shit long before joining the EU. And quite rightly so, OP. If you want to go back to the Middle Ages, go ask Dr Who for a lift.
