Have you seen the new Gillette advert?

It's in line with the #metoo movement and it's just brilliant.

Reaction online is depressing though. It has pissed Piers Morgan off royally though, so that's excellent. Poor little snowflake. Offended at an advert Grin

That's brought tears to my eyes. I'm yet another victim and I have a little boy of 4 who I worry about growing up in this world and am trying my best to raise him well. I love that a massive company has taken this issue on board and is using their power to send a powerful message to the world.

barleyreed · 15/01/2019 13:42

Wow! Made me well up, two young boys so it hit home. Great work Gillette!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 15/01/2019 13:44

As an aside I use 'men's' razors as cheaper. They do exactly the same job. Even if it's offered, we don't need to buy into the pink, specially designed for women's hands/legs thing.

Ethel36 · 15/01/2019 13:49

Great advert. This actually made me tear up!

PerverseConverse · 15/01/2019 13:49

OMG the comments on there. You can almost taste the anger and fear towards women.

gluteustothemaximus · 15/01/2019 13:51

Seems to me like this could be a pretty good barometer of men

I agree! I thought this just made dating a hell of a lot easier.

Show man advert, gauge his reaction, either continue with date or make excuses and leave. An excellent way to find out if he's a prick, very very early on Grin

appless Good point and well made! We do try to have it 'both ways', don't we?

IMO, If it changes ONE man or boy's attitude then it's done a good job. Because that man/boy will live a different life and affect others, who will affect others, etc. "Might oaks from little acorns grow" at all that.

I don't give a shit if Gillette makes eleventy-billion dollars from this ad. It's an ad with a good message.

diddl · 15/01/2019 13:51

" I can’t help but think that it is a cynical marketing attempt to make them appear more right on."

Yup-I mean it's something that could have been addressed in an advert at any time.

robininbrum · 15/01/2019 13:52

I have to agree it's wonderful.

I don't actually mind men being 'gentlemanly' and opening doors for me, or women being 'women' and 'looking after her man and family,' and I like men to be masculine, and don't want to live in a world where a man is scared to call me 'luv.' But yeah, boys DO need to learn that it's not cool to letch over women and catcall them and talk over them and sexually harass them.

There HAS been a U-turn, and things ARE improving, but we still have a long way to go.

gluteustothemaximus · 15/01/2019 13:53

but we still have a long way to go

Oh yes, the messages show just how long we have to go Sad

Great advert, and as the one who does the online ordering of razor blades that's me confirmed as a customer.
Yes, of course it's a cynical piece of marketing - all advertising is. But I'd rather have them saying this than not saying it and I honestly can't understand why anybody should object to an advert that says men should be caring about others and being decent people. It's disturbing that so many men seem to feel threatened by it.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 15/01/2019 13:57

It's strange that many men are defensive about this since the advert specifically shows 'good men' acting the right way too - I think it very carefully doesn't state that every man is the problem by showing the guy who tells his mate it's not ok to letch etc..

Steamedbadger · 15/01/2019 13:57

Seems to me like this could be a pretty good barometer of men

CallMeSirShotsFired · 15/01/2019 13:57

I read a comment earlier where a man was complaining along the lines:

"If women don't like masculine men that's their problem."

He sincerely thought the negative behaviours were "masculine".

  • Kind of the whole problem encapsulated, buddy.
Amortentia · 15/01/2019 13:58

I think I’ve been equally alarmed and amused by the response to this ad being posted by some men on twitter. Bloody snowflakes!

Charley50 · 15/01/2019 13:58

I like the advert, but the comments below it are bloody depressing. And awful.

Charley50 · 15/01/2019 13:59

Getmaine Greer was so right.

Missingstreetlife · 15/01/2019 14:02

Virtue signalling. Exploiting #me too. Big capitalist company might be better looking to their own exploitation of workers etc
They could just show more positive images instead of making a big song and dance about it.

Loopytiles · 15/01/2019 14:03

Yes we can choose to buy razors marketed to men, and I do, but it’s still shit that razor companies charge much more for ladyrazors.

akkakk · 15/01/2019 14:07

Disposable razors are crazy really. My OH has an electric shaver and I use an epilator. Both bought about 5 years ago or more for about £50. Even if somebody doesn't give a crap about the environment, I can't understand why they'd spend more on constantly buying more razors (not to mention the associated shaving cream, other 'necessary' products, etc.)

Electric razors quite simply do not give as close a shave... they also need frequent replacement of the cutting head / foil / etc. Possibly the best for the environment would be the old fashioned cut-throat razor with a strop to sharpen it... but it is a bit more risky... :)

As for the advert - I am male and have no issue with the advert - but then I don't know any male friends who would / who are part of that culture being highlighted - harassing others / bullying / etc. Don't define all men by the activities of some...

caitlinohara · 15/01/2019 14:09

Advert directed by the same woman who did the This Girl Can campaign, which I also loved, but I am a sucker for stuff like this.

thegrinningfox · 15/01/2019 14:10

I loved it too and am appalled but not surprised at the frothing at the mouth men. Maybe shocked at the sheer scale of dislike. And yes it is a bit scary as you can feel the anger mounting and the violece bubbling inderneath. Def to be used as a dating tool because there are good men out there.

In re to Gillette and the fact that it is an ad, better this ad than a crappy strong man women at my feet one.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 15/01/2019 14:10

Oh I agree it's shit, they are appallingly expensive but we do have a choice whether to buy into it or not, unlike male violence and entitlement.

BlooperReel · 15/01/2019 14:11

Wow, so many men absolutely foaming at the mouth about this ad. Gillette clearly got it right, bringing all the sexist, misogynist, abusive men right out of the woodwork...

Elfinablender · 15/01/2019 14:11

Don't define all men by the activities of some...

Ah, give over. Who said that?
