Have you seen the new Gillette advert?

It's in line with the #metoo movement and it's just brilliant.

Reaction online is depressing though. It has pissed Piers Morgan off royally though, so that's excellent. Poor little snowflake. Offended at an advert Grin

Well I did actually like the advert and think it was well done so congrats to the marketing people.
However the old cynic in me would like to know about the Gillette gender pay gap (had a quick google and can't find anything but lots of spiel and no actually figures) and to hear from any women working for them.

It does have a touch of the marketing people sitting around and saying what is a controversial topic we can make an ad about to get lots of publicity so to that effect they have done a good job.
Still doesn't tell you anything about the product.

FaFoutis · 15/01/2019 13:15

Fantastic advert. Well done Gillette.

Stopwoofing · 15/01/2019 13:17

it's a good advert, touching. Still a company trying to get your money though!

appless · 15/01/2019 13:17

Love this ad.

Not one fuck given about the plastic and metal.

Yay for selective moralising!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 15/01/2019 13:18

Of course its publicity driven. Its an advert. Its got people talking. But for once it makes people sit and listen and think and talk for the right reason.

kmammamalto · 15/01/2019 13:20

This made me tear up. I have such trouble trying to understand why people would have a problem with this!? As a mother to a son I want every man to see it.

Cigarettessuffragettesandboys · 15/01/2019 13:20

Really like this advert!

Did anyone see GMB? And at the end the guy says something along the lines of - women do most of the child rearing so if boys turn in to men who treat women this way blame the women Hmm

appless · 15/01/2019 13:21

The whole "but it's only been made to increase profit" argument is a bit odd, given how much time we spend complaining that society so reinforces inequality through the mainstream media, which to a massive degree includes advertisements. The way products are marketed in general has a profound effect on societal behaviour. If more adverts included messages of equality and kindness (even if they're doing so as a cynical marketing ploy), the net result would be positive.

Jaxtellerswife · 15/01/2019 13:21

I was cynical but that's actually lovely now I've watched it

Jaxhog · 15/01/2019 13:22

Wow! LOVED it!

Confusedbeetle · 15/01/2019 13:25

It is a great message. I have sons and daughters. Giving little boys some of the messages in the past brought us to this place. Man bashing doesnt help the problem, celebrating the good guys gives little boys the right stuff to make them feel proud to be boys who will grow into the right sort of men

Elfinablender · 15/01/2019 13:27

I think it's a good ad. I like it. I'm not sure how you could be offended by it - unless you're a bit of a dick.

gluteustothemaximus · 15/01/2019 13:28

Ricky Gervais said "I used to love beating kids up at barbecues. Now I realise this is wrong"

Has he actually seen the advert??

It has 8.6k likes. Jesus people.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/01/2019 13:28

I thought it was a bit laboured (and cheesy) but I can't see what people are getting upset about.

We watched it in the office and at the end the question was 'but does it shave well??'. No-one seemed more or less likely to but them as a result.

Jaxhog · 15/01/2019 13:30

What seems astonishing is this:

43,875 people liked it
268,836 didn't.

I mean, I get that it's an advert intended to get attention by jumping on the bandwagon of #metoo, but it is a very positive message that needs to be out there. What's wrong with that? Are big companies not allowed to support positive change?

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2019 13:31

I suppose the issue with these huge companies like P&G / Unilever isn’t that they can’t sell enough stuff but their image problem - since they do pump huge amounts of plastic and chemicals into the world
So they then spend loads on making us ignore that

Ok I still like the ad but not completely won over by them

Elfinablender · 15/01/2019 13:32

Ricky Gervais said "I used to love beating kids up at barbecues. Now I realise this is wrong"

Surely, even if you only had two brain cells dedicated to comprehension to rub together, you could see the point was to nudge men to intervene where they see aggression and not dissolve into a "boys will boys" apathy.

derxa · 15/01/2019 13:32

Ricky Gervais said "I used to love beating kids up at barbecues. Now I realise this is wrong" Grin That's actually funny.
When did people become so po-faced. Do people actually think an ad will stop bad behaviour?

appless · 15/01/2019 13:34

Do people actually think an ad will stop bad behaviour

Mass marketing and advertising definitely influences societal behaviour. So while this one ad may not change much, as part of a larger trend, it is important, yes.

NettleTea · 15/01/2019 13:36

I love it because I AM (well not literally) the mum holding her sensitive little boy who is daily bullied and upset by dickish behaviour.
I cried
And then called my boy to watch it and he said , 'dont cry mum, thats GOOD'

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 15/01/2019 13:36

I think anything that pushes the whole agenda that young boys are watching the actions of the men around them isn't a and thing. I'm no more likely to shove Gilette into my shopping bag, but I think it's still a totally valid message to try and send, ulterior motives be damned.

Loopytiles · 15/01/2019 13:38

Quite like the ad, up to a point, but like a PP wonder what their pay gap and representation of women and minorities in senior roles is!

And why razors marketed to women cost so much more than mens and don’t last as long. I use Gillette mach 3.

Also don’t think it wise advice to confront young people in a fight: risk of getting stabbed, or shot if in the US!

FamilyReferee · 15/01/2019 13:40

Seems to me like this could be a pretty good barometer of men - a man who thinks this shows men in a positive light (they can create change, be a force for positive, defend/help those in need) is probably someone you want to be around, but a man who sees this as an attack on men (not all men & all that!) & masculinity is probably a dick and it's time to move on & either be single or find one who isn't such a knob.

appless · 15/01/2019 13:41

When companies like Lynx promote their product as a tool for making scantily-dressed women more attracted to men – everyone complains that advertising is reinforcing casual sexism and sending young boys and men the wrong message.

When a company promotes their product with a message that men should speak out more against deeply-rooted sexism – oh it's just an advert, "does anyone think this can really change anything?", "it's all a marketing ploy" (no shit).

cushioncovers · 15/01/2019 13:41

It's a good advert made my eyes sting. Needs bringing out into the open so it can't be a bad thing surely?
However Gillette have just jumped on the bandwagon will be doing it to improve their sales nothing more nothing less. Next year it will be something else that's in their ads. Let's face it a razor is a mundane item so they've gotta jazz it up somehow.
