Would you want another Brexit referendum?

Inspired by the would you vote the same way thread.

I was initially against another referendum thinking it would be undemocratic to not accept the vote but after reading the 'would you vote the same' thread I think I have changed my mind.

  1. It is not undemocratic to ask the same question to people again. You are asking the same people so they can vote the same way again if they wish. In fact asking again is more democratic. When you were in school you would always do repeat science experiments to ensure the results were accurate.
  2. Someone said when you have to consent for an operation they take your consent multiple times in case you change your mind - when they first tell you about it and again just before the information. People do change their minds - they learn new information and just have a different state of mind.
  3. We do have more information available now. A lot of what was said were lies (think £350 million available to the NHS) and we know a lot more about the general process of leaving now.
  4. The population has changed since the referendum. Unfortunately a lot of people have died and 16/17 year olds who could not then now are old enough. Therefore another referendum would provide a more representative view of the future.
  5. Another referendum is not likely to ask the same question. It would be more like do you want 'this' deal and to leave with it as that is what we can get (or no deal), or to remain etc.

My main worry about another referendum is that the country would probably descend in to chaos and a minority of leave voters might get a bit nasty.

Anyway sorry for the long post. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me (like I did yesterday!). What are everyones thoughts?

Yes.

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 15/01/2019 11:40

No - I don't think there should be a referendum. All the evidence is clear that leaving the EU would be disastrous for the UK and I think the politicians need to revoke A50 - it is their job to make the decisions that are in the best interest of the country. Sadly they will probably just fuck about some more.

Mulberry72 · 15/01/2019 11:41

Yes

Beamur · 15/01/2019 11:42

Yes. With clear information and consequences this time. A minimum threshold for the vote to be binding too.

scaryteacher · 15/01/2019 11:43

No second referendum as otherwise you'd have to have a rerun of that or a GE every time people turned 18.

If there were, given the results of the first, then the question should be May's deal or no deal. No other question should be on there.

I think leave voters will get active. There will be a campaign of civil disobedience from people who wouldn't normally dream of it. The door would also be opened to the rise of parties at the hard edge of the political spectrum, both left and right. I'd certainly be looking for a new party to support, as if Brexit doesn't happen, I am politically homeless.

NameChanger22 · 15/01/2019 11:44

Yes, I want one. I've been saying this to anyone that will listen for over 2 years. The first one was based on so many lies, people were cheated out of making the right decision of themselves. Brexit can only ever be a disaster, this is the only one to resolve the problem. It's not undemocratic to check whether people still want to ruin the country or not.

Hotterthanahotthing · 15/01/2019 11:45

I think Credit should be on the Credit board so that some of us can forget for just a few minutes the political shit storm.
If we have another vote it will be rigged toward remain.
3 options to remain, find a deal and leave or hard credit. The leave vote divided.
If it was accepted that we are leaving then the vote should simply be about how.
The politicians are mostly remainers and they will fix it to what they want not the people they purport to represent.

Beerflavourednipples · 15/01/2019 11:46

I don't get the 'you can't just keep having referendums until you win' argument.

We are in a totally different situation now to 2016, our knowledge is totally different, things have come out which suggest the public were misled. Plus it would be all the same people voting so would still be democracy wouldn't it?

The thing is, if Brexit were cancelled now I really think there would be huge civil unrest from certain Brexiteers and I don't really want that either.

whatsagoodusername · 15/01/2019 11:46

Yes.

I'd rather they just revoke A50 and forget the whole thing, but failing that, another referendum, preferably with in/out-with-practical-deal/no-deal. Accompanied by a hell of a lot of accurate information about the consequences of each.

If it still went with Leave, I'd feel a lot more resigned to it. I still wouldn't agree, but I would be more resigned.

Holidayshopping · 15/01/2019 11:46

Yes

Satsumaeater · 15/01/2019 11:47

No. Politicians got us into this mess and they can get us out of it.

Hotterthanahotthing · 15/01/2019 11:47

Brexit not credit!Even my autocue hates the subject.

Rosehip10 · 15/01/2019 11:48

The myth that leave voters will "get active" and do anything other shout a bit or post shit on Daily mail/facebook etc in the event of no brexit makes me laugh.

Satsumaeater · 15/01/2019 11:48

if Brexit were cancelled now I really think there would be huge civil unrest from certain Brexiteers and I don't really want that either

I don't think so and if we exit with no deal there could be riots about food shortages. We had the fuel protests back in 2000, and that was mild compared with the situation we could have with a no deal Brexit.

I think if we stayed in the EU a few would continue to go on about it and everyone else would settle down and forget it ever happened.

Frosty66611 · 15/01/2019 11:49

Yes! With crystal clear facts this time instead of vague promises that will never end up happening

Fatasfook · 15/01/2019 11:50

Absolutely yes, the majority of the population had no idea what they were voting for. To plough forward with this as it stands is completely stupid! Little Britain with its stupid destructive big pride, scared of looking daft.
We need to vote again. Of course we do

scaryteacher · 15/01/2019 11:51

Why does it make you laugh Rosehip? Why do you think it's a myth? Look at the gilets jaunes protests in France, Belgium, the NL and Portugal. What makes you think that couldn't /wouldn't happen in the UK?

MacarenaFerreiro · 15/01/2019 11:52

I'm really torn on this.

I'm a remainer, have always been a remainer and think it's really stupid to be leaving the EU. From that point of view I'd love the government just to say fuck it and call the whole thing off. Or have another second referendum where the outcome would hopefully be different.

HOWEVER. I'm also Scottish and someone who thinks Scotland should remain in the UK. If the UK re-runs the EU referendum because they think we should have another chance at it, that's going to add massive fuel to the fire of the nationalists who want to re-run the 2014 independence referendum too, because they didn't like the result.

I don't want that. Nobody sane wants that. The last independence referendum was so divisive and so awful and I just can't bear to be dragged through it all again.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 15/01/2019 11:52

Yes.

Neither side knew what they were voting for last time, it just wasn't possible but now we know all the options and we should vote on it. That's the only fair way of doing it.

Asta19 · 15/01/2019 11:52

No. It's all gone on for far too long as it is. Lets just get on with it now. Honestly, I'm not even sure the outcome would be different. The people I know who voted leave would do the same again on principle (I didn't vote at all, nor would I in a second one). And the large scale leave voters would probably do the same again. They wouldn't be happy about having their vote trampled on. Either we're a democracy or we're not.

MrsRyan15 · 15/01/2019 11:53

The things that I genuinely don't understand in the debate around a 2nd vote, is that if people honestly believe that it is the will of the people to leave the EU, then surely a 2nd vote will give the same result and solidify in everyone's mind that it is what the country wants.

I would like a 2nd referendum but really not sure as to whether it is realistic, I guess we might find out a bit more after today's vote... or just have even more chaos and uncertainty!!

Raffleeight · 15/01/2019 11:54

Rosehip10 - because far right terrorism doesn’t exist in this country Hmm I personally didn’t find the murder of Jo Cox very funny.

mumblechum0 · 15/01/2019 11:55

yes absolutely. It feels like we're being driven over a cliff by someone who just won't listen to the passengers asking her to stop and check the map.

RangeRider · 15/01/2019 11:55

No. We had a vote & it's not democratic to have another. Politicians had a job to do. They should have done it and haven't because they wanted their own way and not what the country had voted for at one particular time. If you have another vote you've giving them carte blanche to ignore any future decisions and fuck them up until we give up and let them have their own way again.

Neverunderfed · 15/01/2019 11:55

Yes. Either a referendum or revoke A50.
