Would you want another Brexit referendum?

Inspired by the would you vote the same way thread.

I was initially against another referendum thinking it would be undemocratic to not accept the vote but after reading the 'would you vote the same' thread I think I have changed my mind.

  1. It is not undemocratic to ask the same question to people again. You are asking the same people so they can vote the same way again if they wish. In fact asking again is more democratic. When you were in school you would always do repeat science experiments to ensure the results were accurate.
  2. Someone said when you have to consent for an operation they take your consent multiple times in case you change your mind - when they first tell you about it and again just before the information. People do change their minds - they learn new information and just have a different state of mind.
  3. We do have more information available now. A lot of what was said were lies (think £350 million available to the NHS) and we know a lot more about the general process of leaving now.
  4. The population has changed since the referendum. Unfortunately a lot of people have died and 16/17 year olds who could not then now are old enough. Therefore another referendum would provide a more representative view of the future.
  5. Another referendum is not likely to ask the same question. It would be more like do you want 'this' deal and to leave with it as that is what we can get (or no deal), or to remain etc.

My main worry about another referendum is that the country would probably descend in to chaos and a minority of leave voters might get a bit nasty.

Anyway sorry for the long post. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me (like I did yesterday!). What are everyones thoughts?

I personally believe people are more informed now than before the vote. Most importantly the deal to made was a hypothetical ideal. Now we have a reality. It won’t change the hardend voter either way but a lot people were sat on the fence not understanding what leaving meant and I think they would vote differently now.

The loss of EU nhs staff is a repercussion we are feeling now, possible medication shortage, food shortages etc are things that are making people understand what lies ahead.

ethelfleda · 15/01/2019 16:56

Yes - as long as remain is an option on the ballot paper.

simplesalvage · 15/01/2019 16:58

badlydrawnperson like someone said I am asking if AIBU to want another brexit referendum.

JazzyJelly · 15/01/2019 17:00

Yes! Nobody voted for this.

ZenNudist · 15/01/2019 17:01

Yes

Would vote remain again.

First referendum was corrupt.

Personally id prefer no referendum and government doing their job and protecting national interest rather than fucking about with party politics but hey ho.

sittingonthetallseat · 15/01/2019 17:01

No. I voted remain, but the undeniable fact is that nearly everyone (if not absolutely everyone) who wants another referendum is a remainer. It is very clearly an attempt to overturn the last referendum by people who didn't like the result.

It doesn't matter how you try to frame it. Trying to overturn a vote because you don't like the result is a bit crappy.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/01/2019 17:08

There are threads about baby names, weddings and education in Aibu- no one seems excercised that they are in the wrong place. Am I missing something? - why do people come onto these threads and say they need to be elsewhere?

Nnnnnineteen · 15/01/2019 17:09

No. I voted remain, but I do not agree that there should be a round 2 because I didn't like the result. The majority voted leave - would the remainers have agreed to a rematch if remain had won?

Helmetbymidnight · 15/01/2019 17:11

I genuinely don’t think that’s fair. The leave campaign cheated and was full of lies - is that acceptable?

MrsRyan15 · 15/01/2019 17:34

@sittingonthetallseat that isn't true in my experience (and I stress that it is my experience only that I am referring to, not claiming it to be true of the whole country).

I know plenty of people who voted leave and now given the potentials deals (or lack of) that are on the table would now vote remain.

If those that voted remain are so sure that it is still the will of the people, surely a 2nd vote is a great opportunity to prove their point and shut up the remainers once and for all?

And if conversely a 2nd vote showed that it is not now the will of the people, then surely it should be back to the drawing board on what to do next?

Fatasfook · 15/01/2019 17:45

It’s not about that though, it’s not because we didn’t like the result, its because the result is ludicrous, destructive, and a very very bad idea. The leave result was won on lies and false promises to further the agenda of a few corrupt politicians.

time4chocolate · 15/01/2019 17:49

So it is about not liking the result then Hmm

icannotremember · 15/01/2019 17:54

Refusing to try to stop a country committing an appalling act of self harm because you think it would be 'a bit crappy' to ask again in the hope people have changed their minds is ridiculous.

Fatasfook · 15/01/2019 17:55

Time4chocolate not sure whether you missed my point or you are a little bit thick. Il go with the former.

time4chocolate · 15/01/2019 18:02

fatasfook - wow you’re a charmer!! I’ll let you get on with it.

MissionItsPossible · 15/01/2019 18:12

I think the vote to Leave would be higher and maybe that'll be the kick up the backside for the government to just get on with it so I wouldn't particularly want one but not worried if there is another one. Though I could do without the vitriol and nastiness in the run up to it but this will be ten times worse. And if Remain did win, that opens up a whole other load of problems. In fact, no, I do not want another referendum at this stage. It will do nobody no good.

ZenNudist · 15/01/2019 18:20

But Brexit has to be brexit because of the WILL OF THE PEOPLE. Brexiteers have nothing to fear from a second referendum as it will still reflect the will of the people. No?

simplesalvage · 15/01/2019 19:05

ZenNudist Exactly, if everyone did still vote to leave now with all this new information it would seem a lot more democratic and easier to accept.

OP posts:
OddBoots · 15/01/2019 19:16

Yes, this is such a huge thing and we now know so much more about what it involves that the countries need the chance to state 'yes, this is what we really want'.

MissionItsPossible · 15/01/2019 20:05

ZenNudist

I’ve literally said exactly that in the post above yours...

redastherose · 15/01/2019 21:03

Yes definitely. The votes in original referendum were based on lies and corruption, the democratic thing to do is to hold a proper referendum not when we all know what the consequences will be. Those who want to still vote leave can do so, those who no longer think it is a good idea can change their mind, those who voted remain and still feel that way can continue to vote for remain, if there are people who have changed from remain to leave then it is up to them to vote that way too. Basically everyone now has a chance to vote knowing the truth.

Anothermothersusername · 15/01/2019 21:04

If there was I don’t know if I would bother to vote. The whole thing is a complete shambles and I’ve lost faith in the political system.

Anothermothersusername · 15/01/2019 21:09

I agree with what MIP has said above. If it was another vote to leave - then what? Best of three? Best of five? And if the result was remain what then? A third vote just to make sure? If a revote resulted in a remain majority then I believe there will be anarchy on the streets people will be raging.

My biggest fear is that Labour are going to end up in power. Labour seems like it’s now filled with extremists from the hard left and I worry that they would destroy this country.

chilledteacher · 15/01/2019 21:18

Yes
