If there was another Brexit referendum would you vote the same way?

By the way I am not for another Brexit referendum but I am seeing a lot about it on the news/social media and it got be wondering what everyone would vote if it did happen and what did you vote before? I voted remain and would vote remain again.

Regardless of what I’d voted before, the fact that both Trump and Putin have expressed that they think we should leave the EU makes me want to remain in the EU. Completely disregarding economic reasons, I find the notion of aligning ourselves more closely with the other European nations reassuring.

Footloose80 · 16/01/2019 07:34

I believe the leave camp actually said that if they lost by the margin that they won by than hey would call for another referendum.

Parky04 · 16/01/2019 07:40

Voted remain. Wouldn't vote again and wouldn't vote on anything again in the future if another referendum were to be held. We have already voted. Another vote, in my opinion, would be catastrophic for British politics. Although it's not in a great place now.

KennDodd · 16/01/2019 07:47

The EU are pretty much over. I predict in 20 years they will be gone I’d rather get out before that happens.
Thing is, if you believe this (I don't) surely if we just wait, then yes, the country may be in crisis, but we would all be on the same side. Brexit has driven a knife through the heart of this country, we a pretty much split down the middle, not even all of the four countries voted the same way. I will be amazed if we don't see people fighting in the streets over this, I cant see a way to heal what this has done.

KennDodd · 16/01/2019 07:52

I also don't get the argument that another vote (not that I support one), with actual facts on the table, nearly three years later, is undemocratic. In fact I think if polling suggested people had moved significantly to Remain (don't think it has) it would be undemocratic not to revisit this.

Sparkles07 · 16/01/2019 07:56

I was working in the polling booth and hadn't sorted my postal vote, so didn't vote, I would ensure I voted remain this time!

NicolaStart · 16/01/2019 08:42

Of course Leavers would be continuing to campaign like mad had the margins been reversed.
The Farage Faction stirring up anti-migrant stuff etc. (Not all leavers being Faragists, of course).

M3lon · 16/01/2019 09:05

I kinda get the 'anti-democratic' argument about a people's vote - not really, but I see why MPs view it as a disaster. But what about asking the about 2 million people aged 18 to 20.5 who are now of voting age who weren't able to vote in the referendum...and adding their polling to the previous vote?

Could it possibly be considered anti-democratic to ask people who haven't had a say...and who are incidentally most affected by this decision?

Raffleeight · 16/01/2019 11:51

I don’t see how it would be undemocratic to have another vote as long as there is still some form of option to leave on it, therefore if leave is what the people still want it will win. Whatever the outcome would be democracy speaking at that moment in time. That’s why we repeat general elections and didn’t just have one at the start. Politics change and people’s opinions change.

marmeladerose · 16/01/2019 16:46

I want to reamin, I really do. But I just don't think we can have another referendum. Even if having another might be more democratic right now. They cost a lot of money. And even thought it might not seem like it right now UK politics is more than Brexit.

OP posts:
badlydrawnperson · 16/01/2019 16:53

They cost a lot of money.

How much are they?

Maybe the people wanting another referendum could crowd fund it.

Dongdingdong · 16/01/2019 16:54

I now know 5 leave voters who’ve died (all elderly) since the ref.

And I know about the same number of remainers (also all elderly) who have sadly passed away since 2016.

Parker231 · 16/01/2019 16:58

Still no leave voters has posted to explain how they would deal with the Northern Ireland border or how they would protect the supply chain.......... I’m assuming they don’t know or understand?

badlydrawnperson · 16/01/2019 17:04

I’m assuming they don’t know or understand?

Yes, yes you are.

Jitters22 · 16/01/2019 17:23

Why do we have to explain' anything? Who are you to assume anything?

There's never any point trying to get into any kind of discussion on these threads because it always degenerates into a slanging match - we are thick, racist, didn't know what we were voted for, were 'lied to' and so on.

The OP asks if there was another referendum would we vote the same way and we've answered.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/01/2019 17:28

Remain then, having witnessed this shitshow, even more Remain!

greathat · 16/01/2019 18:00

I really don't understand the people that are annoyed with the EU over this. They are doing exactly what they should do and protecting the rights of the member states,as they were doing for us. The fact that we want to be out the club but still get all the benefits says more about the British mind set in my opinion

Parker231 · 16/01/2019 18:10

Jitters. Although I live in the UK I’m not entitled to vote here so am interested in how leave voters think Brexit will work. DH and I have (almost) decided to leave the UK as we don’t think it’s somewhere we want to live. We are lucky enough to hold non UK passports - me Belgian and DH and DC’s Canadian.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/01/2019 18:14

greathat equally the EU want 39billion for what

BorisBogtrotter · 16/01/2019 18:18

The £39 billion is money the UK has already committed to projects, including ones in the UK, and things like the pensions of UK MEPs/Comission employees.

mobyduck · 16/01/2019 18:36

I would use more moderate language to point these things out.

BorisBogtrotter · 16/01/2019 18:40

I've seen far more leavers build the "thick racist " strawman than I have remainers use it.

In fact I've very rarely seen that.

Schmoobarb · 16/01/2019 18:40

Yes. Remain

HildaSaysWhat · 16/01/2019 18:44

Remain and Remain again.

The leave voters I know of would still vote leave.
Sadly, I don't think a second referendum would get the remainers what they want unless the youth vote can sway it.

HildaSaysWhat · 16/01/2019 18:54

Anecdotally the remain voters I know:

  1. very nice bloke on the whole but is definitely racist and an avid daily mail reader
  2. out and out racist piece of crap
  3. nice bloke to have a drink with but a bit thick and can't see that his business, will go down the pan if the predicted enormous recession hits if we leave Europe.

A few of my old work colleagues voted leave, no idea why as we quite deliberately avoided the topic at work. Everyone in management voted remain.

Statistically lower income areas voted leave, higher remain and those without formal qualifications voted leave, those with higher education levels remain www.newstatesman.com/politics/staggers/2016/06/how-did-different-demographic-groups-vote-eu-referendum
