To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

Only if we're having guests over - it's too much hassle for just us. Sadly we have such a busy schedule during the week that there's lots of catching up to do on a Sunday.

Fcukthisshit · 13/01/2019 14:51

Lots of people still having them regularly / semi regularly then!

Looks like lots of the men cooking them too! My dad makes the best roasts. Closely followed by my hubby.

Our salad tea used to consist of tinned salmon (frozen prawns if it was a special occasion) cold boiled potatoes, cucumber in vinegar and other salad type stuff and bread and butter. My grandad used to grow a lot of the salad in the garden. I really miss those Sunday night teas.

We have it but not every week. We have a family tea on a Sunday- usually toad in the hole, cottage pie, fajitas or roast- as these are all meals we like including fussy DS (6).
Roast or cottage pie are good because there are leftovers for Monday tea.

speakout · 13/01/2019 14:54

I was 11 when I had my first Sunday roast.

It;s not such a big thing here in Scotland.

ifoundthebread · 13/01/2019 14:54

My kids and I go to my parents house every Sunday for our roast, if they are busy or away then I do it myself.

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2019 14:55

The day of the week is irrelevant to what we chose to eat. By coincidence we are having roast chicken today but only because it is going out of date. Husband wanted to do a chilli. We had roast lamb on Tuesday, what we cook is based on what we feel like eating and what's in, and as said, what day it is isn't relevant to our choice at all.

BearSoFair · 13/01/2019 14:55

We do maybe one roast a month. Haven't had one since Christmas, today it's chicken and chorizo risotto!

DippyAvocado · 13/01/2019 14:58

Rarely have them. They're a palaver to cook and clear up after and joints of meat are expensive. We're more likely to have a stew with a cheaper cut. Tonight we're having lasagne!

We do sit down all together several times a week though, so maybe don't consider Sunday to be a particularly special day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/01/2019 15:00

Roast pork tonight, , just for the 2 of us. We eat very little meat during the week, but I usually do a roast sometime over the weekend.
Always in the evening, though. Breaks up the day too much otherwise.

Even when I was a kid (a long time ago!) we always had the roast later, around 6, so most of Sunday was free for other things.

Imsosorryalan1 · 13/01/2019 15:00

We still have them in the summer but we use the bbq instead

Peridot1 · 13/01/2019 15:00

We have one most Sundays but DS gets fed up as they get them a lot at school too. He mainly gets fed up as he only eats the meat and potatoes! And ketchup.

We have it in the evening though not at lunch time.

Having steak tonight though. With mini roast potatoes, mushrooms, onions, peas and pepper sauce. DS will have steak and potatoes and ketchup.

Isitwinteryet · 13/01/2019 15:02

We don't eat meat but still have a roast every Sunday with alternatives.

Singlebutmarried · 13/01/2019 15:02

Not every week. I really enjoy a roast, but we sometime will do a massive late breakfast, and then just have cheese n biscuits in the evening.

My parents still do though.

Also OP my grandparents was the same, roast at lunch and then leftover meat with salad (iceberg, cucumber, tomato and a boiled egg)

Kaykay06 · 13/01/2019 15:03

That steak sounds delicious might get some for this week. A roast is my Boys fave dinner. They don’t always have one on a Sunday but I usually do a chicken midweek it’s fairly cheap for me as it stretches far and only really paying for a chicken and veg, but plates are always cleared so makes me happy. Although get a wee bit fed up of being in the kitchen sometimes

AnotherPidgey · 13/01/2019 15:03

I rarely bother as it wasn't worth it when it was just DH and I. We prefer Mediteranean type veg although I have improved my repetoire of traditional veg. The DCs like them so maybe I should do them more.

greendale17 · 13/01/2019 15:03

I don’t and I don’t know anybody that does.

adaline · 13/01/2019 15:03

I work weekends so no roast dinners here!

Wonkypalmtree · 13/01/2019 15:06

Most weeks we do, including some random midweek roasts

CalmDownPacino · 13/01/2019 15:06

Nope not here. Christmas is probably the only time we have a roast.

Sunflowermuma · 13/01/2019 15:08

We do most weeks, usually lamb (we're sheep farmers and use our own). We often have a roast chicken dinner midweek to. Husband grew up on roast dinners and I like watching dd eat a good amount of different veggies

exLtEveDallas · 13/01/2019 15:12

Sep to Apr its a Roast every Sunday. We eat in the evening though so usually have a big breakfast to tide us over. I always go overboard with the veg, and Monday evening it's roast dinner soup and crusty bread.

Today is Lamb, roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, carrots, green beans, Savoy cabbage and carrot and swede mash.

Apr-Sep the Aga is switched off so Sunday Roast becomes either a Tesco chicken with new potatoes and veg, or a slow cooked gammon or beef. Every so often DD craves a 'proper' dinner so we go to a local carvery.

doubleshotespresso · 13/01/2019 15:12

We do have a roast every Sunday yes- tend to do things differently in summer months though- probably salmon with lots of chilled sides and a heap of salad

JaiNotJay · 13/01/2019 15:12

I don't think I've ever had a Sunday roast. I agree with speakout that they're not really a thing in Scotland. I don't know anyone who has one.

corythatwas · 13/01/2019 15:12

Not every week but we do have a roast quite often, though usually as an evening meal. Not terribly expensive if you eat small portions of meat and use the leftovers during the week. Doesn't take that much work either compared to some of the other cooking we do. And makes for labour-saving during the week when we are busy.

recently · 13/01/2019 15:16

Pprobably only about once a month and at lunch time. Sunday night is always pizza night.
