To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

We have one very occasionally, although I do love them. I really enjoy making Christmas dinner but for some reason I find a normal roast dinner a massive chore to make. Also I can't imagine eating the same meal on the same day each week. We're quite adventurous eaters and I normally have a list of things I want to make which is far longer than the number of days I have to cook for. Tonight we're having Greek chicken traybake with herby yogurt dip.

windydoggy · 13/01/2019 13:49

@agedknees your post made me laugh 😂yep same with our dog , Sunday is roast chicken in his tea night .
Roast every Sunday here op and I don't even eat meat , always buy a nice free range chicken for husband and the dog for Sunday's .
I have the veg and potatoes, stuffing and Yorkshire puddings.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 13/01/2019 13:50

We have one 90% of Sunday’s. It’s probably one of the only days of the week we all sit down together to eat. If we don’t have one at home we are usually at someone else’s house having one. We are having slow roast lamb tonight

MissSusanScreams · 13/01/2019 13:50

I bloody love a roast. We are not having one today and I am gutted. Will do pork next weekend though!

Also, Sunday roast must be served at 3.30. It is the law.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 13/01/2019 13:50

Roast here maybe every third or fourth Sunday in the colder half of the year.
Summer tends to be more barbecue or salad and sides type meal
We always eat our main meal on a Sunday in the evening

StreetwiseHercules · 13/01/2019 13:52

We have a Sunday roast regularly. Not because it’s “tradition” though, just because we like the food.

I loathe tradition. It’s a control mechanism.

loopy42 · 13/01/2019 13:52

We have a roast every other Sunday.

I always insist that we do as it's the only time that all of us sit down to enjoy a meal together due to DH shifts, after school activities and shared care arrangements.

Usually followed by a family board game

RayRayBidet · 13/01/2019 13:53

Having one today. Tend to have them more often in winter. Summer it's too hot here(Germany) to stand slaving over a hot stove.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 13/01/2019 13:53

Tend not to on a Sunday as I'm away working but have a roast twice a month or more. One of the easiest things to cook, bung it in the oven and open some wine, by end of 1st bottle it should be ready

Sleepyquest · 13/01/2019 13:53

I can't bear roast dinners so just Xmas day for me!

tinytreefrog · 13/01/2019 13:55

We have one most Sundays, if nothing else on. Usually if an evening though around 7pm though, unless we have guests.

tinytreefrog · 13/01/2019 13:56

Mind you, in summer, roast is usually exchanged for a BBQ, unless it's raining!

BlueSuffragette · 13/01/2019 13:56

We have one most Sundays. Today I'm making roast beef, roast pots, yorkshire pud, honey roasted parsnips, carrots, cabbage and lashings of gravy. Followed by cherry pie and custard. A large glass of wine and then a rest!

Oblomov19 · 13/01/2019 13:57

Regularly.
I think you are totally wrong OP and many people still have them. Plus now a mid week roast. Plus loads have one at Christmas.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 13/01/2019 13:58

Every week without fail.

GobblersKnob · 13/01/2019 13:58

Every Sunday here. Big walk. Roast dinner.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 13/01/2019 13:58

We have a roast every Sunday but it’s not a traditional one. It’s more like this
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/775657/onepan-roast-dinner

Sometimes we put a spice rub over the chicken. Really easy and tasty.

cricketballs3 · 13/01/2019 13:59

as per PP the dog would call the RSPCA if she didn't have a roast dinner in the winter. The summer however due to 90% of Sunday's consisting of driving DS1/2 to cricket matches we have to go without Sad luckily the dog loves going to cricket so does forgive us

Hidingtonothing · 13/01/2019 14:00

Most weeks, mainly because DSS comes for tea and he loves a roast. He's nearly 22 mind you, maybe it's time to stop! Smile

Greyhound22 · 13/01/2019 14:00

Yes we have roast chicken (as I don't eat any other meat) virtually every Sunday.

My dog would be heartbroken if we didn't he has a dinner today and then the left overs for the next two days. I've already run out of kibble today I couldn't face him if we didn't have a chicken.

We don't have it for lunch though usually about 5pmish.

Knittink · 13/01/2019 14:01

We have a roast maybe one or two weekends a month, just as often on a Saturday as a Sunday though. Pretty much the same when I was a child (I'm late forties). Having homemade dhal and naan tonight.

mamaduckbone · 13/01/2019 14:02

We do most weeks in the winter - much less so in the summer as we’ll often barbecue or have something lighter.

It’s sometimes at lunchtime and sometimes in the evening depending on the dcs football and rugby matches. Even if we don’t have a roast it’s usually what my
Mum would call a proper dinner - ie something with potatoes and veg.

I do think those rituals associated with family life are quite grounding and reassuring, and I like that my children are having similar experiences to my own childhood.

(Yes to salad for tea as well - usually with tinned pears and cream for pudding. That’s something I don’t do but might have to be reinstated. I really fancy tinned pears now!)

ZogTheOrangeDragon · 13/01/2019 14:03

I wish we did as I love roasts.

SneakyGremlins · 13/01/2019 14:03

I spent my latter teen years in a children's home where every Sunday it's a roast dinner. That's roughly 200 roast dinners.

I don't like roast dinner Sad so now I live on my own, NO ROASTS Grin

Tonight's dinner is meatballs and pasta Smile

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/01/2019 14:05

We don't bother. None of us are fussed about roasts. I don't believe DH or I have ever cooked a roast. We'll eat them if we're at a relatives house, but we're not really keen.

We do make an effort for it to be a family meal though. So with 2 fussy dds and a fussy dh, we're left with about 3 meals that we all eat Hmm so those are what we have on a Sunday. Sausage and mash, chicken risotto or toad in the hole.
