To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

We have a roast once a week, but it tends to be for a weekday dinner. I work all week and find I have too much else to do on a Sunday to be cooking a big meal too. Another one who’s dog would be unimpressed without his roast here!

Ragwort · 13/01/2019 14:24

Probably 3 out of 4 Sunday’s I cook a roast, personally I loved roast meal and find it pretty easy to cook. We always have our main meal in the evening and I certainly don’t spend the day preparing it. I find it a lot less faff than some of the so called ‘easy’ mid week meals.

angieloumc · 13/01/2019 14:25

And Eton Mess for pudding!

vdbfamily · 13/01/2019 14:25

Every Sunday here. Just finished. Husband cooks so I will now spend next hour putting kitchen back together!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/01/2019 14:26

In any other season than summer, we usually do have a roast dinner on Sundays. But we're in summer in Aus here now and it's getting too fecking hot to have a roast. We do have traditional turkey roast for Christmas, but other than that, we tend to avoid them more. Sometimes we will (because we like roast dinners) but a lot of the time we will have something that takes less time to cook and uses less oven heat!

Bluelonerose · 13/01/2019 14:26

Most Sundays we do.
We don't always have a joint though.
Tonight we've got pork chops.
I love a roast dinner and would have one daily if I could

Babdoc · 13/01/2019 14:26

Mmmm, yes. Dead easy, chuck it in the oven, it cooks itself. Lovely labour saving, satisfying meal on a Sunday night after a good long walk on the beach or up the hills.
I always make extra gravy to put in the fridge, so I can heat up the left over meat in it on Monday, for an even easier second roast dinner!

MissMacaron · 13/01/2019 14:26

We have roasts maybe three weekends out of four over the winter. But during the summer not a chance!

Imsosorryalan1 · 13/01/2019 14:27

Every Sunday, we even had one when we were in Lanzarote last month...but we did have it in an British fine dining restaurant 😁

winewont · 13/01/2019 14:27

Beef casserole with parsnips, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding today, but more often than not I’ll roast a joint

BentNeckLady · 13/01/2019 14:28

95% of Sunday’s in the winter but never in the summer. Who wants a roast in a summer like last year?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/01/2019 14:28

We have one once every couple of months, always chicken though. Then risotto on the Monday with the leftovers. I’ve just made spaghetti bolognese for tonight.

Babyroobs · 13/01/2019 14:30

We have one most weeks and last week we had a mid-week one too ! It is the only meal all four dc will eat without grumbling..

MamaHechtick · 13/01/2019 14:31

We do, we also usually have one in the week too! Roast is the only meal both DC's eat without a fuss, and they eat all the vegetables.
We've got chicken today with roast potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Also Yorkshire pudding and gravy of course.
We don't have it at lunchtime though, always in the evening.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/01/2019 14:31

We mostly have a big piece of meat but we don't always do the traditional roast dinner with it.

So we often do something Nando's style with a chicken
Or go middle eastern with a shoulder of lamb
and pork would probably be pulled

I like a traditional roast but the kids find it a bit bland.

MissMarplesKnitting · 13/01/2019 14:36

We do them most weeks. At very least Sunday evening meal we all sit together, tonight is toad in the hole though.

Mostly I do them because everyone will eat it (hurrah) and also leftovers make for easy dinners on monday and Tuesday

scarbados · 13/01/2019 14:36

If we have a roast, it's more likely to be on a Friday so we can have the leftovers as ingredients for quick weekend meals.

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/01/2019 14:36

We don’t have a sunday roast mainly because dh is very fussy over food (thanks mil) so i try and ensure we have a meal that everyone likes. We tend to have a roast on one the evenings that he is out or back late.

Upthepong · 13/01/2019 14:39

Most weekends, no always on the Sunday though, we cook a roast. Just part of our routine.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 13/01/2019 14:40

We do! Every week! If for some reason we can't do a Sunday it gets done on a Monday instead.

NoParticularPattern · 13/01/2019 14:41

We have one every Sunday. On the very very rare occasions that we don’t we usually have some other sort of treat- fish and chips, steak and onion rings or something

ForalltheSaints · 13/01/2019 14:41

Not often a roast, but always make the effort to have a proper cooked meal, fish or meat with vegetables. Haddock today was lovely.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 13/01/2019 14:45

Most Sundays we have one at midday-ish. I like not having to think about what to cook, just what meat to have. The rest of the week's meals I like to vary quite a lot, but it can get difficult thinking of things.

Not worried about missing a Sunday though if we were out or doing something.

steppemum · 13/01/2019 14:48

We still do sometimes, maybe once every 5-6 weeks.
We all like a roast.
But we don't have it for lunch, we have it for dinner.

Longdistance · 13/01/2019 14:50

Sunday roast here 🙋🏼‍♀️ Every Sunday.

We vary it from chicken, gammon, leg of lamb, beef. We invite fil over too, as he’s on his own (and gets a decent feed at least).

My dm always slaved over the stove on a Sunday. She’d make soup, would have a roast in the oven and had a cake made the day beforehand. It was always an event in our house to all sit down around the table. This was all ready by 1pm.

I suppose I’ve carried on the tradition.
