To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

We have a roast most Sundays. Today's is lamb with roasties, sprouts, cauli, green beans, carrots and lots of thick gravy.

TailEndCharlie · 13/01/2019 18:17

Every Sunday. At 1pm... or late like today! Like I did as a kid. It is my kids favourite day of the week purely because of this and all that goes with it.... log fires lit before ready to sit in front of afterwards, the fact that we all sit round the kitchen table together, roast potatoes! and the fact that we have Sunday Lunch Rules (I wont harangue them about veg consumption and they can get down between courses to play.... I am not putting in the effort to not be able to take my time over the meal, enjoy it and linger between courses!) They always resurface for pudding....

StartedEarly

Pot roast
Filled pasta
Burgers
Mushroom risotto
Spaghetti carbonara
Sausages and mash
Baked Gnocchi
Pancakes with spinach and bacon and sweet pancakes
Chilli
Pizza
Cevapcici with vegetable-rice and Tsatsiki
Käse Spätzle (a sort of German pasta dish)
Fish fingers and chips and peas/sweetcorn/carrots
Lasagna

Might be a realistic 14 days worth of evening meals in our house. I know they're not all healthy or to everyone's taste (I have varying amounts of time to cook depending on shifts!) But I'm sure every family with capacity to cook a roast has at least 14 meal options...

We've had a roast today & often do on Sundays but it's one of the only days the kids don't have clubs & DH doesn't work.

We always have it as our evening meal at 5pm ish as no one likes eating too much at lunch time.

Got just enough leftovers for a lovely lunch tomorrow Grin

phlebasconsidered · 13/01/2019 18:30

We do. It's the only evening none of us work. We just had chicken, roasted veg and rice. I use leftovers on Monday for tea and Tuesday for my lunch. If i ever do potatoes I always cook loads so I can use them in the week for fishcakes, bubble and squeak or gnocchi.
It helps me when i'm working. We have chicken and roasted veg risotto tomorrow now and I don't have to cook. I use leftover meat in stir fry, hash and pies.

We do but not necessarily a roast joint each week. Tonight we have lamb shanks but it mostly it's chicken with full works. We serve it around 7ish.

We try to eat together as much as we can, not just Sundays. It's the only time I see the DSs.

In the summer the bbq takes over the oven but by the end of the summer, I never want to see another sausage again!

MyHeartIsBrokeButIHaveSomeGlue · 13/01/2019 18:42

Roast every Sunday except in the summer when it's too hot. Can't beat a roast with family, it's what Sundays are all about! Leftover meat always gets used for other dinners and/or sandwiches.

whymewhyme · 13/01/2019 18:44

We have one every Sunday

IncyWincyGrownUp · 13/01/2019 18:58

Very rarely. Maybe half a dozen proper ones a year. Quite often do mince and mash, which is a simple and quick gravy meal for any night you fancy it.

Coffeist · 13/01/2019 18:58

Roast (chicken) few times a year, winter time, max. We tend to cook something fancier on weekends though, and Sunday is meal prep day normally as well, so still spend bit of time in the kitchen.

TheFallenMadonna · 13/01/2019 19:02

Almost every Sunday. But in the evening, not for lunch. A roast is an easy cook I think. Just needs time. Perfect for Sundays.

Qasd · 13/01/2019 19:04

We do in the winter but not summer, basically if it’s dark by 4ish it’s roast season. My parents did them all year round but I couldn’t imagine a full roast dinner in a heat wave!

Squirrelblanket · 13/01/2019 19:07

Just had our Greek chicken traybake and it was delicious. But after reading this thread I think we'll have a roast next week! Smile

Alfiesmom74 · 13/01/2019 19:07

Roast dinner every Sunday. My DS 10 would never forgive me if I didn’t cook him a roast on a Sunday. I try and do a roast dinner at least once in the week as well. I enjoy cooking and DH and DS enjoy eating it.

Greensleeves · 13/01/2019 19:09

We don't have a roast every Sunday, but if we don't have a roast we usually have something that for us is the equivalent of one, so something quite hearty and traditional. Tonight we had fish pie followed by apple and plum crumble and custard. We had a roast on Friday night as we had a chicken that needed using then.

BlueJava · 13/01/2019 19:09

We have a nice family meal most Sundays, probably about 1 in 4 Sundays is a roast. Sometimes I'll do a big curry or steak and salad etc. I like roast, but I find it a bit bland sometimes!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/01/2019 19:11

We have one most Sunday's Sept - mid May then have either a roast or, if the weather's good, a bbq late May-August.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/01/2019 19:12

We are having a Sunday roast today - first roast dinner since Christmas day. Am really looking forward to it.

In my ideal world we'd have a roast every fortnight or 3 weeks (but we are hardly ever all together on Sundays) - once a week gets a bit samey imo.

Namelesswonder · 13/01/2019 19:13

Hardly ever! I cook every evening during the week I don’t cook at weekends if I can help it. Tonight was pizza

LAlady · 13/01/2019 19:14

We have a roast every Sunday without fail.

lissie123 · 13/01/2019 19:16

We’ve just had roast lamb with roasted veg- parsnips carrots sweet potatoes and home made gravy. Bloody lovely twas. Put it in the oven went out for a long walk and it was ready when we got back home. Try to do a roast every week. Not in the summer though- tend to have a BBQ and salad instead.

ChanklyBore · 13/01/2019 19:18

Every single Sunday. Roast meat, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, at least 3-4 types of vegetable, gravy. A decent pudding too. Every Sunday.

Mmmmdanone · 13/01/2019 19:21

We do. DD loves her Sunday roast. We started doing it about 5 years ago and it stuck.

Charlie97 · 13/01/2019 19:25

We do, today was slow roast shoulder of lamb, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and homemade Yorkshire's ....... OH cooks it and it's delicious!

Charlie97 · 13/01/2019 19:25

Oh and a gallon of gravy.
