To think that not many people have traditional Sunday roast anymore?

When I was a younger we literally had a roast dinner every Sunday and having something different was never an option. The roast was usually at my grandmas house and always followed by salad for tea.

So after preparing my meatloaf and jacket potatoes for tonight’s tea I was just wondering how many people still have a roast on sundays? Or did you have other food related traditions that you still follow now?

Just curious Smile

I grew up with the Sunday roast and love it. Used to love picking fresh runner beans and mint for the mint sauce with my grandad from the garden for gran to prepare. My ExH hated roasts so after too many years of not having our Sunday dinners, we now have one every week! Tradition in our house now!

Nothisispatrick · 13/01/2019 14:05

We do about once a month, sometimes in a pub but it’s never as good. I do wonder why some people seem to spend the whole day cooking a roast, a roast chicken for example takes an hour and a half. My landlady seems to start cooking hers at 9am as the whole building smells of meat all day on a Sunday.

icelolly99 · 13/01/2019 14:05

We have one every couple of weeks but not on Sundays. We go to church twice on a Sunday and prefer to do quicker meals so we can still have family/relaxing time in-between church.

Magicstar1 · 13/01/2019 14:06

Just DH and I at home, but we have a roast most weekends. Having roast chicken today, but DH has gone low carb so cauliflower rice with it

Lucisky · 13/01/2019 14:08

We have a roast just about every Sunday evening in the winter. Roast pork tonight with home made apple sauce. Our dog, too, loves the Sunday roast. In the summer we bbq instead, and my oh does the cooking for that.

iklboo · 13/01/2019 14:09

We're having one today. Rare roast beef, potatoes, veg, Yorkshire puds, gravy you could use as an offensive weapon Grin

CuppaSarah · 13/01/2019 14:11

We're off to dad's in an hour for ours! DH is taking advantage of the chance for a bit of quiet as he lost his Grandad last week. So I'll be bringing him a plate to load up and bring back for him. We either had roast at dads on a Sunday or if not I do a mini roast on a Monday. I need to get my roast potato fix.

Bowchicawowow · 13/01/2019 14:11

We usually have a roast because everybody likes them, I don't have to think about what to cook on a Sunday and it is quite healthy as I do loads of vegetables. We have it quite late on Sunday so it's a nice end to the weekend.
I can recommend Toby Carvery for those people who like roasts but can't be bothered cooking. We went to one through desperation once when we were on holiday and I was extremely sceptical but it was fantastic. It was all freshly cooked and just really nice. We have been a few times since and never been disappointed. We never have the puddings so I can't vouch for them. I think they do a lot of deals too if you are into your codes.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/01/2019 14:11

Roasts are my favorite dinner, it would be my death bed meal every time!

Last roast I did was Christmas Day but we live in the Caribbean so I don't cook them as often as I'd like because we're always out and about at the weekend.

Occasionally I'll pick up a rotisserie chicken and do a midweek roast but it really only counts if there are roast potatoes.

I pretty much only do roasts on high days and holidays these days, the next one I cook will probably be lamb nearer Easter. Actually, I'm going to be back in the UK over Easter and my mum knows how much I love her Roasts so she'll probably do at least 5 whilst I'm there!!!

SpaceCadet4000 · 13/01/2019 14:12

We don't. I like to have variety in my food, and we don't eat much meat. So if I invest in a big joint, I much prefer to do something interesting or new with it.

We also prefer to spend our Sundays out doing fun things due to both of us working all week. Our "big" meal is more likely to be on Saturday as we can stay up later/feel we have more time to play with.

Sunday is often our taco night- it's fun, quick, can use up leftovers, and I find there's less clean up.

MaryBoBary · 13/01/2019 14:13

We always have a roast on a Sunday. Takes hours to cook, created loads of washing up but it wouldn’t be Sunday without a roast!

But due to an unexpected invite last night and the best before date of a pack of mince we are having lasagne tonight.

Feels so wrong.

TotHappy · 13/01/2019 14:14

My dad has done one every week bar a handful for as long as I can remember - I'm 31! We usually go (me, dh and DD). Roast dinner at 1, Sunday tea at 6ish which is a spread of things like afternoon tea - sandwiches or cold meats, two kinds of cake, crumble or Eminem meringue, trifle, jelly, scones... You get it

TotHappy · 13/01/2019 14:15

Lemon meringue... Eminem meringue sounds gross!

Groovee · 13/01/2019 14:17

We often have a roast but we sometimes have it on a Saturday if Dd is going back to uni on the Sunday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/01/2019 14:17

We have one pretty much every Sunday, I love it! It's nice to have a proper traditional meal, plus it then does Mondays tea too with leftovers. Roast pork today!

topcat2014 · 13/01/2019 14:17

I love roasts, but DC hate them and most hot meals.

I tend to do jacket potatoes rather than roasties though, as a nod to a bit of healthy eating - and simpler to do.

If I am doing Chicken I get the ones that roast in the bag.

bengalcat · 13/01/2019 14:18

Yes pretty much without exception love a Sunday roast - and as others have pointed out so does the dog !

BarbarianMum · 13/01/2019 14:18

Def not every Sunday but regularly. And I never do a roast on any other day of the week (Christmas Dinner excepted).

spidey66 · 13/01/2019 14:19

I'm about to tuck into roast beef and all the trimmings. My husband cooks it, his roasts are legendary. Since he retired, he's done itvefery Sunday. When he was working he often worked Sundays so it was only about once a month then.

Oldraver · 13/01/2019 14:20

We very occasionally have one that coincides with a Sunday, as OH often works weekends. We often have one in the week on what we call our 'weekend'. It's always later though around 5-6..cant be doing with eating a roast at lunchtime like we did when I was a youngster.

I think Sunday roasts suit ESSO workers but for those that have odd shift patterns the weekends dont mean the same

Today is DS's birthday and he has opted for Fajitas

AnduinsGirl · 13/01/2019 14:20

I don't, mostly because I live alone and the mess it generates makes it not really worth it, IMO. But on the plus side, I get to use the weekend to experiment will all kinds of nice dishes I wouldn't have the energy for during the week.

Neverunderfed · 13/01/2019 14:21

We do. In summer maybe not but still have an 'effort' meal. Kids would be horrified if we didn't 😂

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 13/01/2019 14:22

Roast is on and I've just had pizza and salad lol. I'm vegan but everyone else are meaters! I prepped the veg Grin

sherrysfortea · 13/01/2019 14:23

I love a roast, we probably only manage it about once a month though because we like to have takeaway on a Sunday

When I lived with my parents we had one every single week and they still do

angieloumc · 13/01/2019 14:24

We have a roast nearly every week and are having a chicken, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puds, roast and mashed potatoes and lots of veg. My DS is off back to uni this evening after Christmas so it'll just be me and DD for a while. I still make far too much and usually pop a plate down to my mum if she hasn't come up here.
