Death Penalty for Bellfield

Charlotte48 · 09/01/2019 19:42

Having watched Manhunt about the investigation into the evil paedophile; child killer; woman killer; woman abuser and beater, Levi Bellfield, I was just wondering if, after Brexit, we should restore the death penalty. Surely Bellfield should be executed.

No sympathy for Bellfield, but Christ Brexit is bad enough already. And we probably couldn't organise it.

Madders45 · 09/01/2019 20:04

And you know that even if (god forbid) the death penalty was restored, Bellfield could never be executed.

You can’t retroactively impose a sentence that wasn’t legal at the time the offence was committed.

Or do I have too much faith in the British people

You and David Cameron. Smile

twattymctwatterson · 09/01/2019 20:06

It's so depressing that people as thick as this exist

thecatfromjapan · 09/01/2019 20:06

Sadly, the desire for a return to the death penalty hasn't actually, gone away.

☹️

It's famously one of the things the HoP has a quiet understanding not to discuss, precisely because a significant faction of the British public are in favour, despite it being a bit of a Bad Idea.

mumsastudent · 09/01/2019 20:08

death penalty is a short interval of suffering (& that's the period just before - life imprisonment is a life time - & if someone is innocent as has happened than what? & its also the effect on the person who does the killing - so no we got rid of it long before Brexit - you really cant blame that on the EU for goodness sake!

thecatfromjapan · 09/01/2019 20:08

😁@Helmet

menztoray · 09/01/2019 20:08

If we had the death penalty there would have been -

  1. Lots of people killed who were later proved to be innocent.
  2. Lots of people killed who later confessed to other murders and therefore their relatives left in the dark about what happened.
Abra1de · 09/01/2019 20:09

The death penalty is state-licensed killing. No way.

GabsAlot · 09/01/2019 20:10

no i dont agree in other countries and i wont agree to it here

yes hes evil and sick but we have no right to take another life to justify that

mumsastudent · 09/01/2019 20:12

I ve got it not Thailand we should send them to Botany Bay (irony alert if you need me mention that!)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/01/2019 20:12

Rapists and murderers should be hanged

No - as others have said, state murder is still murder - and killing even a murderer is a dreadful thing to do - we can't ask anyone to do it on our behalf. It can't be easy for the executioner, no matter what form of death penalty is used.

And as for killing rapists - if they know they will be hanged anyway if caught, wouldn't that be an incentive for them to murder the women they have assaulted, and reduced the chances of being identified?

Errrrrrr · 09/01/2019 20:13

Oh there's a podcast about a brexit-style vote which ends up bringing back the death penalty. It's called Capital, very Thick of It in tone. I didn't realise it was quite this close to the truth!

Twistedinknots · 09/01/2019 20:13

No. I firmly believe the death penalty is wrong.
Prison is the right place for him.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 09/01/2019 20:13

Nope. Why should they have the easy way out. Their victims never did. They should have to live with it.

Plus in this case Levi was charged with the other 2 girl murders first before being linked charged and found guilty of Millies. Had he been killed already that may never have happened. Not that would be that quick but still. Been in other cases Robert Black etc.

Also it's not a deterant. People still murder in places with it.

lalalalyra · 09/01/2019 20:13

The day we can guarantee that there will never be a mistake, a wrongful conviction, an undiagnosed health issue and that we have all of the information the person convicted has about potential other crimes then maybe there should be a discussion about the death penalty. However, since that will never happen then no chance should it even be a debate imo.

Hoppinggreen · 09/01/2019 20:14

After Brexit we can
Eat bendy bananas
Have 3 pin plugs
AND bring back the death penalty
Woo Hoo - makes financial ruin worth it

ghostyslovesheets · 09/01/2019 20:14

nope

lalalalyra · 09/01/2019 20:14

(I should ask - I in no way would ever want the death penalty. I just don't think it should even be a debate before those points are satisfied)

pointythings · 09/01/2019 20:15

No. The death penalty is never acceptable. There will always be miscarriages of justice. All it takes is for one innocent person to be executed. That is too high a price to pay.

Look up the case of Peter Kiszko.

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 09/01/2019 20:15

Apparently a recent letter he sent from jail had traces of drugs on it.
So I guess it's OK for him to have a fun time in jail.

I didn't realise Japan still has death penalty!

He did try and attempt suicide on arrest by using the elastic of his trousers and stuck his head down the loo...

ChodeofChodeHall · 09/01/2019 20:15

trying to discredit Brexiteers

An oxymoron, surely? Hmm

Vitalogy · 09/01/2019 20:16

Can I recommend two films:

Pierpoint: The Last Hangman (2006)

Dead Man Walking (1996)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/01/2019 20:16

Showing that killing us wrong, by killing someone. You haven't really thought this one through.

Like those parents you used to see (and who doubtless still exist), dragging a child by the and and yelling (smack) "And DON'T (smack) hit (smack) your sister! (smack).

sonlypuppyfat · 09/01/2019 20:16

He should live forever in a stinking shithole
