Death Penalty for Bellfield

Charlotte48 · 09/01/2019 19:42

Having watched Manhunt about the investigation into the evil paedophile; child killer; woman killer; woman abuser and beater, Levi Bellfield, I was just wondering if, after Brexit, we should restore the death penalty. Surely Bellfield should be executed.

Why can't they live in bad conditions is beyond me though. Ok, don't murder them but at least make it incredibly hard for them.
I don't have the answers but I can see why people do become so passionate about this particular subject. Especially when you hear about how easy their life is in prison etc.
Life doesn't always mean life either for some prisoners. As I said before, an emotive subject and if you all did a ' vox poll' in your town or city I bet loads of people would want it brought back and would say so without even thinking about any other answer.

viques · 09/01/2019 20:48

murderers and rapists have no place in a civilised country , well that's a grand sweeping statement isn't it, but you call yourself a civilised country if you advocate state approved judicial murder?

Nothing to do with Brexit but I am all for the death penalty for the worst crimes! Why are taxpayers paying for him to stay alive...

DoneLikeAKipper · 09/01/2019 20:50

Craft1905

You are a terrible terrible person. But so am I for laughing Blush.

MotherHeyho · 09/01/2019 20:50

I would love to find out what percentage of those who voted Leave were motivated, at least in part, by the belief that it would allow us to restore capital punishment. That is the level of staggering stupidity that has got us into this mess. The OP should be thanked for the illuminating insight she has provided into the echoing void that is the mind of the Brexiteer.

12fromcold · 09/01/2019 20:50

@IAmAllowedAnOpinion You obviously have no idea how much it costs to execute someone.

I would hate my life to be in the hands of ignorant people like you.

Madders45 · 09/01/2019 20:52

Why can't they live in bad conditions is beyond me though. Ok, don't murder them but at least make it incredibly hard for them.

That’s going to work wonders for rehabilitation and cutting reoffending rates, isn’t it?

Let’s show these people how inferior we believe them to be. Let’s crush them. I’m sure that’ll have no consequences on their behaviour towards society when they eventually get released...

PerkingFaintly · 09/01/2019 20:52

People who are in favour of the death penalty, are you aware that one of its effects is believed to be false acquittals?

When juries know the penalty could be death, they are believed to be generous with their "reasonable doubt" – for fear of getting it wrong given what's at stake.

Further, when faced with a case where they don't feel the accused is guilty but don't feel the penalty should be death, they sometimes acquit to avoid it.

Eg pp272-3

Madders45 · 09/01/2019 20:52

(I am of course being sarcastic...)

Rosehip10 · 09/01/2019 20:53

@IAmAllowedAnOpinion Death penalty and the various appeals while prisoner is on death row etc in America costs a fortune, so I'm not sure what you think "taxpayers" would save by bring back hanging, but hey you have a daily mail type rant to let off steam.

PerkingFaintly · 09/01/2019 20:53

where they don't DO believe the accused is guilty

Craft1905 · 09/01/2019 20:54

I always used to say that sex offenders should be made to castrate themselves with a pair of rusty scissors, and then be made to eat it.

Sexist! What about female sex offenders.

And when you say "sex offenders", you do know that an 18 y/o lad who gets drunk on a night out and flashes his arse at a passing woman is classed as a sex offender. Now I know he shouldn't have done it, but given young people often do daft things, don't you think self castration with rusty scissors is a tad extreme.

Frequency · 09/01/2019 20:54

Oh God. Couldn't some clever legal bod use threads and Facebook posts like this to prove the referendum is invalid because no fucker had a clue what they were voting for?

As for the death penalty and torture in prison. No. The punishment is deprivation of liberty. I'm quite happy with that. I don't want prison to be a horrible place. I want prison to be a place where people are rehabilitated and educated. After all, 99% of them are released back into public once they've served their sentence. All we'll achieve from torture is to make them more screwed up than they already are.

Norway literally has a luxury island as a prison and their crime rate is much lower than ours.

IAmAllowedAnOpinion · 09/01/2019 20:55

I know it costs alot to execute someone - by lethal injection anyway, personally I am all for hanging or firing squad. But I wouldn't care if it cost MORE to execute them, but I fundamentally disagree with paying for them to stay ALIVE when they don't deserve to.

mumof2andstillsurviving · 09/01/2019 20:56

@Craft1905 I was about 14 at the time... 30+ years have passed since then

Patroclus · 09/01/2019 20:56

Yep if i was on any jury with the death penalty as an option i would fuck the case right up on purpose. Hate me for that, I dont give a shit.

Figgygal · 09/01/2019 20:57

Absolutely no way not for any reason would i want to see it come back

Patroclus · 09/01/2019 20:57

Costs loads more to execute peple than life inside.

ElevenSmiles · 09/01/2019 20:58

Sod human rights, if some scumbag murdered one of my children I would press the button. Hopefully the end would be agony.

Maybe I live in a different area to a lot of mumsnetters but I guarantee that if I did a survey in my town etc etc I would not meet anyone who would argue against bringing back the death penalty.
I've had this conversation with people and rarely does anyone say ' no, bad idea' ( I can think of one person who might say no.,)
A referendum would be a huge yes. I'd put money on it.
( luckily they never will do this.)

InSightMars · 09/01/2019 20:59

Yes, OP, send the message that it's wrong to kill people by killing people. Oh and make it retroactive too? How far back did you want to go in applying it?

I live in a country where they have the death penalty in certain states and, as far as I can see, as a deterrent it sucks because people are still murdering people in those states. and then there's the slight problem of, you know, occasionally a convicted killer turns out to be innocent which is fine if they find out out before they execute him, I mean fine apart from the 10-15 years or so he's spent in prison appealing the sentence while awaiting execution, but not so fine if he's already been executed. I mean what are we gonna say? Oops, sorry.

Rosehip10 · 09/01/2019 21:00

@ElevenSmiles which is why victims (or relatives etc) of crime are not involved in the trial of accused criminal.

Imissgmichael · 09/01/2019 21:00

Helmetbymidnight - There is a correlation between people who support the death penalty and Brexit

Really helmet any proof of that? Do you realise how bigoted you sound.

This leave voter feels very uneasy about the death penalty and wouldn’t support it.

Unfortunately what does worry me is that that prison doesn’t seem to be that hard except obviously for the loss of liberty. There’s also plenty of these monsters that are let out. For example the sorry excuse for a human being who slaughtered 3 children and stuck their bodies in spikes. How do you know Levi Bellfield won’t be freed eventually?

If there was a choice between them being let out and living next to you, or being executed, what would you choose? I don’t know, it’s a difficult one.
