To cancel my holiday last minute because I’m fat?

EilaLila · 08/01/2019 18:23

I’m going away in a few weeks to a hot country and I’ve looked at all my clothes and absolutely nothing fits. I have rapidly gained a lot of weight. I have been on steroids but I have also been comfort eating due to depression which is totally my fault though, no excuses. I have overhauled my diet in the last couple of week, I have started to lose a few pounds but I’ll still be very large when I go.

I want to cancel. It’s a group of us and it doesn’t change anything cost-wise for anyone except me. In theory, I would love to go on this holiday but I’m so self conscious and embarrassed in my body. WIBU to just cancel?

Easy to say but I'd go.

Is it with friends who will be kind to you?

Sparklesocks · 08/01/2019 18:25

I’m so sorry OP, it’s horrible when we feel like this, but I don’t think you should cancel - you’ll miss out on a lovely holiday with your friends. And the truth is other people rarely notice what others look like on the beach - too busy worrying about themselves Flowers

Highginx · 08/01/2019 18:26

Thing is, if you cancel you’re missing out anyway. So you don’t really have anything to lose. You’ll be fat wherever. You might as well be fat with a cocktail in your hand.

BifsWif · 08/01/2019 18:26

Please go.

There’ll be people of all shapes and sizes there, I promise. Don’t let your weight stop you doing things you enjoy.

Highginx · 08/01/2019 18:26

That sounds like a piss take. It’s really not.

isseywithcats · 08/01/2019 18:27

have a look on everything£5.com they have lots of choice and all one price in kos last year i basically had 4 pairs of pallatzo type loose pants and about 6 different cotton tops and by mixing and matching and swapping i looked different every night, also loose cotton skirts are flattering and keep you cool and loose gypsy style cotton tops keep the sunburn at bay and are cool to wear

notacooldad · 08/01/2019 18:28

To be honest the holiday may do you good if you are with people that love you and understand what youve been through.
If you've had depression it is understandable that you have comfort eat but to not go on holiday is like putting your life on hold until you are slim. What would you cancel next? and then after that?

If I was you ( and to be fair I'm not that far away with weight increase, nothing to wear, holidays coming up etc) I would go to Primark or similar and get an inexpensive clothes for your trip and have fun. You can work on your weight when you come back.

Have a nice time

Rocketpants50 · 08/01/2019 18:29

Go, if you dont you will feel bad for not going and if anything like me will then eat more and then feel even worse. Get on line buy a few basics, am sure you will look and feel fabulous with a cocktail in hand. Sounds like a holiday is just what you need.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 08/01/2019 18:29

I was you last year. I hated myself and spent ages looking for bikini’s in a vain attempt to try and make myself feel better.

I went and guess what? I forgot my fucking baggy, stylish tankini Angry I had to buy a swim suit that would make a 18 yr old blush, but it was so hilarious that I ended up thinking ‘fuck it’ and didn’t give a shit. I enjoyed the holiday and I felt more sorry for the poor sod sat behind me and my ‘almist’ G string, low cut swimsuit (I’m nearly 50 and knocking on the door of a size 16)

Strongmummy · 08/01/2019 18:30

If you really want to go and you’re going with a group of friends who will be supportive of how you’re feeling emotionally then I really would just go! Tell yourself it’s a reward for taking steroids and feeling depressed. You can still eat healthily / not drink / exercise when you’re away if you want. What a fabulous way to kickstart a healthy lifestyle - in the sun!!!!

Highginx · 08/01/2019 18:31

It’s not only slim people that are allowed to go on holiday. Do work on it but know that actually, if you do a bit of soul-searching as to win it’s more important what strangers think of you than what you know about yourself, you might find it’s less of a problem.

EilaLila · 08/01/2019 18:32

My friends are amazing friends. They wouldn’t care if I was 30 stone or 8 stone. I haven’t even told them but I know they’d be upset if I cancelled due to this.

I would rather be fat with a cocktail in my hand on the beach Grin even if I do hide under a giant sarong.

Thank you for giving me a gentle kick. I am still ambivalent but it helps to sound off with people who don’t know me. :)

I hear you .... I’ve gained a lot in last year due to steroids but I still think you should go.
Can you bid on some cheap bigger sized stuff on eBay (I’ve done this before) when in the same position.
You can get 2 swing vests for £6 in Asda... a couple of sets of those will see you through a few days. You will feel more miserable if you don’t go!

chockaholic72 · 08/01/2019 18:33

I'm carrying too much weight at the moment and worried about a trip to Turkey. Needn't have worried - our resort was full of Russians who were even bigger than me. They didn't give a toss, so I decided not to either.

PenguinPandas · 08/01/2019 18:34

I would go, either get some more clothes over here or when you are out there and have fun and don't worry about your appearance.

PinkHeart5914 · 08/01/2019 18:34

Thing is you can either be fat, away on holiday enjoying time with friends which will do your depression good OR you can be at home, without your friends sad and still fat.

No contest really Go on the blooming holiday, relax and enjoy being with friends will do your mental health the world of good. You can tackle your weight if you wish too once you are back

CmdrIvanova · 08/01/2019 18:37

I was pre emptively self conscious when I bought a bikini for my holiday to Ibiza but I needn't have worried, all shapes and sizes of people were wearing bikinis. You'll be grand when you get there, have a wax, spray tan and mani-pedi before you go maybe? If you stay home you'll just feel worse that you missed out.

sackrifice · 08/01/2019 18:37

Oi.

Get your arse on holiday. Nobody cares how fat anyone else really is, and if they do they are not worth worrying about.

You earnt the money, go enjoy your holiday and fuck 'cancelling'. Your friends love you and obviously want you there so go.

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 08/01/2019 18:40

You should go OP! If you don't you will only feel worse about yourself, you won't feel any better by not going.

There will be people there of all shapes and sizes, in bikinis, swimsuits. No one will even notice your weight. Honestly the only person who will think anything about your body is you! To everyone else it's just another body, pretty similar to all the others and there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

You don't have to wear anything revealing if you don't want, but a holiday always does everyone good. If you are going with friends they will know your size and they won't care/notice. Get yourself to Primark, buy a couple of bits and get yourself on holiday!

Frouby · 08/01/2019 18:40

If you are going to be on a beach/round the pool look for a really simple cover up. I have one, think it was a fiver from tescos or something. I never feel self concious in it, its basically a big t shirt in floaty material. Slightly see through so doesn't actually cover much up but I love it.

Next had some black harem pants in last time I looked, they will be comfortable for evenings with a nice vest top or floaty top.

Pick your best feature and flaunt it. Look on the sale rails, there is loads of summer stuff round here being dragged out of store cupboards.

EmeraldShamrock · 08/01/2019 18:40

Please go and have a great time.
Can you imagine if you got really sick in the future, I bet you'd kick yourself for missing out on a quality holiday with pals.
Life is too short, get yourself some new outfits, if affordable them, please do not miss out.

CherryPavlova · 08/01/2019 18:43

Nobody cares except you. You’re probably not as fat as you imagine and you’re probably pretty. You don’t have to parade in a near invisible bikini, if you don’t want to. You can use a sarong (as suggested) when walking around on beach or near pool. Your friends like you as you are. Go and enjoy yourself.

Katinkka · 08/01/2019 18:46

Yeah nobody cares. About you being fat not your feelings. Get some new clothes and go. I know how you feel. I just went back up to a 22 myself but you have to be brave and carry on. Live your life. Xxx

PineapplePower · 08/01/2019 18:48

This makes me so so sad, YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY GO. I’m tired of seeing my own family members restrict themselves because they feel too fat to enjoy their life; don’t let this happen to you. HAES (happiness at every size).
