To cancel my holiday last minute because I’m fat?

EilaLila · 08/01/2019 18:23

I’m going away in a few weeks to a hot country and I’ve looked at all my clothes and absolutely nothing fits. I have rapidly gained a lot of weight. I have been on steroids but I have also been comfort eating due to depression which is totally my fault though, no excuses. I have overhauled my diet in the last couple of week, I have started to lose a few pounds but I’ll still be very large when I go.

I want to cancel. It’s a group of us and it doesn’t change anything cost-wise for anyone except me. In theory, I would love to go on this holiday but I’m so self conscious and embarrassed in my body. WIBU to just cancel?

This time of year should be good for summer bundles on EBay, get some bids in and you can always re-sell/charity shop those bigger clothes as and when you want to

DarienGap · 08/01/2019 19:17

Hi op
Please go on holiday!
I'm up to a size 24 and no one looks twice when your on holiday. I bought a few swimdresses retro 50s style ones which I felt comfortable in, Chiffon kaftans and knee length sundresses for daytime and floaty Maxi dresses for night time. Get a mani/pedi and some nice sunglasses, and go for it!
Happy hols!!

GimmeBread · 08/01/2019 19:19

I feel much the same OP. I've got a beach holiday in 6 weeks and I'm the biggest I've been for years. None of my holiday clothes are going to fit so I may have to head to Primark/£5.

I'm not worried though - let's face it, nobody's looking. And if they are, bugger them!!

EssentialHummus · 08/01/2019 19:22

What they all said Grin! A few flattering outfits and you're good to go. I hope the holiday offers a welcome break - it sounds like you've had a tough time of things lately.

DarienGap · 08/01/2019 19:24

Swimsuits from For Luna, they have some fab designs for all sizes. Well worth it

Bungleinthejungle · 08/01/2019 19:25

Missing out on your holiday is only likely to make your depression and your comfort eating worse. Go and have a fantastic time. You're obviously a lovely person as you have some great friends.

It will do you the world of good and a tan always makes you look and feel better in any case!

amusedbush · 08/01/2019 19:28

I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been and I was very close to cancelling a holiday in November last year simply because I felt too fat and embarrassed to enjoy it.

In the end I went and I enjoyed every minute of it! I bought nice clothes in the size I currently am so I felt comfortable.

Go, drink cocktails and enjoy!

chocatoo · 08/01/2019 19:29

Of course you must go. Agree wholeheartedly with the PP who said it's better to be there with a cocktail in your hand! Use the time now to get yourself a few bits to wear (Primark a great idea), some big sunnies, a good haircut, nails done and a spray tan before you go. Lucky girl going on hols - enjoy!!

Ratonastick · 08/01/2019 19:29

I’m so glad you’ve decided to go. You will enjoy yourself and feel much better and no one will care about the size of your arse. I’ve been just where you are and once cancelled attending a pretty big event as lots of people who hadn’t seen me in years were going to be there. I was so paranoid about the increase in my weight (size 10=>18 due to health issues). I wish I hadn’t, I wish I had been braver. And I wish I had remembered that the people who matter don’t mind and the people who mind don’t matter.

straightjeans · 08/01/2019 19:35

Be fat at home or be fat on holiday in the sun? I know which one I'd be doing!!

delboysskinandblister · 08/01/2019 19:37

Definitely cancel because only size zero are allowed on holiday.

You will feel fabulous having had your holiday. You will feel shit having cancelled.

kateandme · 08/01/2019 19:39

buy some of those light hareem pants and live in them.maxi dress.beach dress.
be kind to yourself
I think with depression too it will add to the fear/not wanting to go.as depression wants to keep you secluded in itself.
could you to a friend.let someone support you with this.
also what self hate and depression is good at is not allowing you to do stuff and then you using it as another stick to beat urself with.
another thing you didn't do.failed it.left out of.missed friends.not part of.all because of how ugly o fat you are.and so the self loathing cycle continues and builds. you don't need to do that to yourself.your so lovely for even thinking you need to do this.
what would you enjoy about this holiday? what will the accomadation be like?what will the weather o scenery?what book?what laughs you gonna have.try and focus on the glimpses of the good bits.let them outweigh the fears.
you deserve this.
what if you could be beautiful.what if you could start thinking you were beatufiul.becasue if all ur friends want you to come on this holiday you must be pretty great.
I know its hard and we cn all come on here telling you your awesome and fab and to go.but you have to believe you can.
and you've been so strong and brave with the other things you've had to deal with.plus you've come on here in a time of need.so you can soooo do this.
the fear and the what if and stuff builds sat here now feeling miserable.but you don't know how good it could be.
you can you can.big hugs.xx

Figlessfig · 08/01/2019 19:42

I get the feeling I’m a lot older than you!

I used to feel dreadful when holiday time came around and I didn’t have any holiday clothes that fit or that I felt great/sexy in. Looking back, I can’t believe I was so fucking stupid 😂🤣

Work out what size you are. Buy a couple of swimsuits. If you must, get ones that support your boobs and hold in your belly. It’s not essential, but do it if you must. Then buy some cheap floaty sarongs, strappy dresses and maybe one or two more formal (but still cheap!) things for going out in the evening.

You will be absolutely fine. You’ll have a great time. And if you’re feeling a bit down at the moment, what better way to give yourself a lift than a lovely holiday with friends?

Please don’t cancel! You’ll feel awful when all the lovely holiday pics appear on Facebook/Insta/Snapchat (depending on age).

I hope you have a lovely holiday and come back relaxed and refreshed.

kateandme · 08/01/2019 19:42

oh and your not alone remember that.
for whatever reasons there will be many in your shoes.there could be someone with weight problems.even those who are now really thin through illness.
with cancer
no hair
had there leg blown off
major surgery
scares from injury
a mole
birthmark
or other mental health issues
so your not alone many will feel scared too.be one of them braving it together

ashtrayheart · 08/01/2019 19:42

Some floaty things and you will be fine. I went to Turkey a few years ago at my heaviest, I was about 20 stone I think! Had a great time Grin

MissB83 · 08/01/2019 19:45

Get some of those cover up things for on the beach (if it's that kind of holiday), they are very flattering in dark colours. Or a maxi dress/long skirt/loose trousers will do the same job. Loose trousers and a top with a big hat will do the job if sightseeing! Pop to somewhere cheap like Primark and get a few bits in the bigger size in case you do manage to lose a little weight when you get back. I think you might find that being with friends and enjoying some warmer weather might make you feel better in yourself. Good friends ought to do that! If you miss your trip you will just feel sad about that instead.

More people were looking at the old guy in gold speedos

halfwitpicker · 08/01/2019 19:47

I'd give my right arm for a holiday in the sun!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 08/01/2019 19:48

If you were my friend and you suddenly bailed out on a group holiday I would be really sad and would miss you terribly. You're going on holiday with friends - they want you to be there!

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsOn · 08/01/2019 19:51

Have a lovely time and soak up the sunshine. You’ll feel much better out of the grey chill - it’s going to be foul here next week.

HeyLala · 08/01/2019 19:54

You absolutely must go.
If you feel like it, I would take a pair of trainers and go for a lovely long walk early morning before breakfast and before it gets too hot. This always helps my mental wellbeing and makes me feel so much better starting the day.
Hope you have a great time x

jeanne16 · 08/01/2019 19:54

Don’t let your weight issues stop you living your life fully. It is so easy to think ‘I won’t do this until I have lost weight’. Unfortunately you can waste too much of your life before you start living.

BunsOfAnarchy · 08/01/2019 19:55

Fck cancelling. Just go! Enjoy!

kateandme · 08/01/2019 19:57

JesusInTheCabbageVan oh god don't lol!

Canshopwillshop · 08/01/2019 20:08

Please go! Life is too short. The sun will do you good and a little tan will make you look and feel better. Get a few floaty kaftans/beach dresses, a big pair of shades and go and have fun.
