I really don't know wasn't taught at all how to keep a house.

How often should I be doing these things?

Once a week I’ll wash the floors, everyday I’ll hoover (but that’s because my children make a lot of mess) and I wash the towels after every use, but that’s only because we have two towels each so we alternate and we all like fluffy towels after the bath. I’m a SAHM though, so I have much more time to do all this, when I worked it would get done when I could be bothered.

Canshopwillshop · 09/01/2019 11:45

@katekat383 - once a week seems perfectly reasonable to me. We each have our own bath sheet sized towel and they are used to dry our clean bodies.

Fairylea · 09/01/2019 11:45

I wash the floors every other day. Towels are used a couple of times and then hot washed. I hoover everyday.

I think a lot depends on whether you have pets or very young children. We recently looked after my mums 2 dogs for a few days and the floors were absolutely grim... took me three lots of mopping after they’d gone to even get them half way to looking clean again!

Unbelievable18 · 09/01/2019 11:48

Hoover kitchen and hallway most days (hairy dog), mop twice a week downstairs (kitchen and hallway), bathrooms mop once a week. Wash towels and bedding once a week mostly. Clean bathrooms twice a week. Shoes off house, but one massive dog.

katekat383 · 09/01/2019 11:51

Re not towel washing often enough: think about all the shedded skin particles in your towels. You do know skin sheds?

katekat383 · 09/01/2019 11:51

on your

Thisnamechanger · 09/01/2019 11:53

Oh my God you lot would think I'm disgusting. I do a wash of towels maybe once every six weeks?? I have about eight towels that I rotate. They don't get dirty though and if I hang them straight on the towel rack they don't get that damp smell either.

Thisnamechanger · 09/01/2019 11:53

think about all the shedded skin particles in your towels

They're clearly not doing my house any harm!

Dragon3 · 09/01/2019 11:58

Thisnamechanger, if you rotate eight towels over six weeks you are using less than one a week. So you're actually cleaner than the rest of us once a weekers!

Yabbers · 09/01/2019 11:59

Once a week, generally. Floors get more attention in the winter than in summer. Kitchen floor gets done more often.

MrsPinkCock · 09/01/2019 11:59

Hoover daily downstairs, weekly upstairs
Mop floors twice a week, we have a dog with muddy paws...
Towels washed weekly, although we do have a few on rotation

Thisnamechanger · 09/01/2019 12:02

dragon DP uses them too though. I don't care, they all smell fine to me! 😁

fishonabicycle · 09/01/2019 12:09

Steam mop floors once a week, but do grubby spots as i notice them. Towels changed every 3-4 days. Hoover upstairs once a week and downstairs 2-3 times a week.

Birdsgottafly · 09/01/2019 12:27

It depends on where you eat and if you let your toddler walk around with food. Wear shoes indoors etc.

If so, you need to hoover or Bush a bit everyday. Likewise spot cleaning possibly daily. Mop every couple of days.

I do it daily if my GC are around and used to when mine were younger.

Towels, we each have our own. I don't mind every 3/4 uses, but I air dry mostly. My Adult DD will go by the smell of the towel. I go by what the person using it, wants.

Racheallouise · 09/01/2019 12:30

I hoover everyday but upstairs once a week ,mop floors once twice a week unless spills / accident's or it's winter and dirty foot prints hate footprints on floor do your dusting once week unless can really see it . Towels get put in once week when there's enough for washer

tilder · 09/01/2019 12:41

I love a MN towel washing thread.

I wash hand towels weekly. Bath towels fortnightly unless smelly or there is less other washing, then they get done earlier.

Am sure that's shocking to some people. Then again, I am pretty clean post showerWink

lpchill · 09/01/2019 12:48

Got a toddler, cat and a dog (dog doesn't shed thank god) in a 2 bedroom mid terrace.

I hoover every other day doing the whole house
Mop once a week.
Wash lounge carpet once a month
Toilet and sink daily (have the one bathroom)
Kitchen worktops every day
One load of washing every other day
Towels once a week
Our bed once a fortnight, once a week in summer
Toddlers bed once a week

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 09/01/2019 12:51

A) one a week but hoover/sweep 2-3 times a week and anytime there is food dropped at mealtimes

B) every 3-4 days

C) 2-3 times a week

Two school age children, no pets.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 09/01/2019 12:51

I aim for once a week for all of those. In reality the hallway / living room tend to get hoovered more often, and the bedrooms less so. I spent a week deep cleaning over the New Year, kids were away and I could really get on top of it. It did look lovely, and really lifted my spirits, so I’m resolving to keep it up better this year. I’m also trying to be more ruthless at getting rid of things, and more intentional about bringing less stuff into the house in the first place.

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 09/01/2019 12:52

Dettol and wipe all kitchen surfaces after cooking and each evening.

Canshopwillshop · 09/01/2019 12:55

@katekat383 - thanks for the patronising response! Yes I do realise skin sheds but I still think washing each person’s own towel once a week is enough - same goes for bedding. I don’t have a problem with my own skin cells.

Nothisispatrick · 09/01/2019 12:59

I am amazed how often people vacuum. Then again we have a horrible heavy vacuum which turns me into a sweaty mess when I use it.

Am I the only MNetter who just can NOT be bothered when it comes to this stuff?! Do all you ‘once a week’ people actually have a schedule, or is just around once a week when you get the chance?

Shednik · 09/01/2019 13:29

I hoover daily but mainly because of pet hair. I hoover upstairs less often. Maybe as little as fortnightly Blush

Mop floors once or twice a week.

Very lazy with towels and beds! Perhaps monthly!!

stayathomer · 09/01/2019 13:33

Hoover every day, towels when dirty or smelly and wash once/twice a week or when there are bad spills. When the kids were crawling I washed once a day

Ladymargarethall · 09/01/2019 13:39

All towels very Tuesday, sheets Thursday.
Everything else if I notice it needs doing.
