I really don't know wasn't taught at all how to keep a house.

How often should I be doing these things?

HemlockStarglimmer · 08/01/2019 18:01

I don't keep track. I do them when necessary.

Bluelady · 08/01/2019 18:08

Weekly for all, I'm probably a slattern.

bonzo77 · 08/01/2019 18:11

I’d say between once a week and once a fortnight depending. And assuming that you would do sooner if a particularly dirty.

Toptheginup · 08/01/2019 18:12

Hoover every couple if days, wash floors once a week, towels once a week, hand and tea towels daily pretty much

AnnaMariaDreams · 08/01/2019 18:14

Floors/ Hoover happens fortnightly when the cleaner comes.
Towels washed weekly.

ZenNudist · 08/01/2019 18:15

Weekly or more often as needed

DerelictWreck · 08/01/2019 18:18

So depends on household - I live alone and am out the house 12 hours a day, and in bed for 8 so...

Towels - once a fortnight
Hoover - once a month or so
Was floors, fortnightly

C00lio · 08/01/2019 18:19

Once a week for all of them although I don't always manage this

eightoclock · 08/01/2019 18:21

wash floors twice a year but ideally every 2 weeks
wash towels every 1-2 weeks
hoover: quick hoover monthly and proper hoover under all furniture etc probably twice a year. Ideally would do it every 2 weeks
clean bathroom weekly.

No pets or kids though so that would make a big difference. Our house is not the cleanest but nor is it a pigsty. I know plenty of people with much dirtier houses. When I moved in with my ex he didn't own a hoover and his house had not been hoovered for 12 years.

I think the main thing is that when you do something, do it thoroughly and get into all the corners etc. Better than doing a bad job frequently.

HotInWinter · 08/01/2019 18:24

Bath Towels: once a week. The one in the kitchen I dry my hands on when cooking, every day a wash goes on - so 3 or 4 times a week.

Floors: swept or hovered twice a week, with spot clearing with dustpan and brush if needed. Aim to mop after sweeping/vaccuuming but skip that sometimes - so 3 mops a fortnight.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 08/01/2019 18:32

I hoover downstairs most days but upstairs only weekly or sometimes stretch it to a forthright.
Kitchen and bathroom wiped around everyday and given a proper clean weekly. Kitchen and bathroom floors spot wiped as and when and properly cleaned weekly. Kitchen towel and bathroom hand towel every day or so.
Bath Towels when they don’t pass the sniff test so usually 10 to 14 days.
I like a clean tidy house but I don’t obsess about it and think a little and often keeps the house clean.

Beefandmixed · 08/01/2019 18:35

Hoover the busy places every other day, quietly ones once a week.
Hard floors are cleaned on my hands and knees ( Iv no idea why I do this although my nana used to clean clean like that many years ago ) once a month. Towels are about every 3/4 uses.

PseuDenim · 08/01/2019 18:36

Cleaner does absolutely everything once a week except laundry loads (although she does iron), so I don’t do anything except wash towels, tea towels and bedsheets once a week. And clothes etc obvs.

MushroomRaviolli · 08/01/2019 18:36

Wash the floors every week (but tbh recently it's become more like once a fortnight)
Change towels about every 3 days
Vaccum downstairs daily (dog hair and kid mess) Vaccum upstairs once a week

Cherylshaw · 08/01/2019 18:37

I hoover twice a day morning and night, wash towels everyday/after they have been used and wash my floors every second day I have a 4 year old a 10 month old and a dog so to be honest it really needs done all the time

ladyvimes · 08/01/2019 18:37

Once a week. I’ll hoover more if it looks bad!!

pizzacrisps · 08/01/2019 18:40

I'll need to hoover a couple of times a day which is fine now I have a cordless! I'll aim to mop the floors weekly, maybe twice a week.

Sounds like this is a good amount. Thank you Mumsnet

Depends on you.

As you've got a baby, I expect you're probably cleaning up quite a lot around/under them daily anyhow, but at a rough estimate, I'd say daily sweeping, twice weekly mopping and vacuuming every other day, taking into account small children are likely to spend a lot of their time playing, crawling or sitting on the floor.

Because we have space to hang towels up on the banister to dry immediately they're used, they get washed by the third use, normally - unless they've ended up on the floor and got soggy, when they go into the machine straight away rather than risk the smelly, damp towel smell. Always a hot wash and no fabric conditioner.

If you have a pet, I'd say vacuum and quickly mop daily to keep the fluff and dirt/germs down a bit.

Change the bed linen weekly (hot wash). It just feels so much nicer to always have a clean and fresh bed, whether you're five or fifty five (or any other age). When you strip the bed, I'd suggest vacuuming the mattress to keep dust mites down.

Bathroom gets cleaned (loo wiped, sink and bath/shower sprayed/wiped over) quickly each day.

Every month, I'd suggest you make a point of a deep clean of the kitchen and bathroom. Because you've been keeping on top of it all, it won't be anywhere near as hard as if you don't bother and then have to get a month's worth of grime off the floor/the countertop/behind the loo.

And if this sounds all too much like hard work, just get your cleaner back. I wouldn't begrudge it and would use the two hours to do something fun like going swimming.

ApproachingATunnel · 08/01/2019 18:48

Fir it’s hoovering downstairs every other day, floor one a week and towels once a week!

OutPinked · 08/01/2019 18:51

DP changes his towel every time he showers. I personally think that’s a hideous waste but he claims he breaks out in spots if he doesn’t Hmm. I change my towel every 3 days? And the DC are still young so only bath every other day, change the towel weekly.

I do the floors every other day.

Don’t have many carpets but hoover them weekly.

ItsQuietTime · 08/01/2019 18:51

As often as they appear or smell a bit "meh" is probably fine.

I don't have carpet but sweep and mop daily because I have a crawling baby. Who still somehow manages to get grubby socks. 🤨

BlueJava · 08/01/2019 18:52

It depends on how many people/pets and how often they are indoors. We are me, DH, 2 teenage DS - we are out most of the day and have no pets.

a) wash the floors - weekly (but if we are all around such as over Xmas then every 2-3 days).
b) wash the towels - every 3-5 days (we each have our own towels and shower in the morning and bath or shower at night)
c) hoover - this is kind of easy as we bought a robot vacuum cleaner so every couple of days. but it probably doesn't need this much.

WontShareMyAuPair · 08/01/2019 18:54

Hoover, downstairs every day (its needed with dc). Bedrooms and hallways once a week. Stairs ummmm when they look like they need it so approx every 2-3 weeks.

Mop floors - pre dc once a week. With dc after every dinner!!!

Wash towels and bedding - loads in the summer (i love the smell of clean crisp fresh bedding) but in the winter they are a bugger to dry so about once every 2 weeks.

Bettyjojojo · 08/01/2019 18:55

Have a look on Facebook or Instagram for The Organised Mum Method, TOMM, she has a good weekly cleaning routine to follow.

yellowsparkles · 08/01/2019 18:56

I hoover/ spray mop the floors every night and steam once a week...once a month I'll pull out all the furniture and do a big hoover/ steam. I only do it because I have a very messy eating toddler and it's easier rather than trying to sweep/ pick up with kitchen roll...I am talking a 1 minute hoover in living room and kitchen lol

I would happily reuse towels once more but DP is fussy and likes a clean towel so he's in charge of washing them to make sure there's enough for me, him and the 2 kiddies x
