AIBU to think that other than some people being upset or angry, there are no downsides for the UK if Brexit doesn't happen ?

I can't think of any downsides to the UK not brexiting other than some of the population being upset for a bit. Can anyone else ?

I suppose the argument reverts to all the reasons people voted for Brexit in the first place.
But as a remain voter, I agree.

happyasasandboy · 02/01/2019 08:21

Only complete loss of face in the EU politics world. We were fairly rubbish at negotiating there anyway, but if we don't leave we will be taken even less seriously.

Inevitable now either way, and a far cheaper price to pay that's actually leaving!

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2019 08:24

I think if we just call off Brexit we will lose face. If we have another referendum where the outcome is that the public have really thought about it and with more facts in mind, the vast majority prefer the EU, that could be a positive. Hugely risky of course.

LittleBearPad · 02/01/2019 08:26

Only complete loss of face in the EU politics world.

I think that ship has sailed...

malificent7 · 02/01/2019 08:27

It would be great...but hugely embarassing. Still...it's hugely embarassing anyway.

planespotting · 02/01/2019 08:29

Well some people have been changing their house decor to match a blue passport so they might be upset GrinGrinGrinGrin

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2019 08:30

Yes we are in the shit. I'm happy to lose face and stay in the EU.

EwItsAHooman · 02/01/2019 08:31

It would be embarrassing to call it off and we'd be considered to be a bit of a joke but that's the case now so hardly a change at all.

I think there'd be riots if it was called off but I also think there'll be riots if it goes ahead, there was a predictions thread earlier in the week and I made the comment that there are a lot of angry, disaffected people waiting for a spark to set them off.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2019 08:31

Am I right in thinking the official London nye fireworks celebrated the EU this year? Surely that's a fairly strong political statement :o

comebacksoonsusan · 02/01/2019 08:31

I think you're right.

Still hoping here that TM will fall completely on her sword and save us from it.

A complete lack of faith in our democratic system. Fairly big problem for me.

MsTSwift · 02/01/2019 08:34

I’m not sure there would be riots. Apart from the passionate anti Europe smaller group would have thought the majority that voted for it would be quite relieved

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/01/2019 08:38

We’re well past the point of no return on embarrassment or National humiliation, so I suspect you are right. Or at least the benefits of cancelling brexit still outweigh the negatives of staying near.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/01/2019 08:40

in not near. We’re not actually physically moving the country out of Europe.

frumpety · 02/01/2019 08:41

Recent polls have remain 54:46 leave , so if we believe in democracy we should stay surely ?

BarbarianMum · 02/01/2019 08:41

Long-term yes, the problems that caused the Brexit vote are still there.

I dont think anything terrible would happen if we repealed or suspended article 50 to give us a chance to work out how we want to leave, or if we voted on it.

EwItsAHooman · 02/01/2019 08:49

I think Brexit (whatever the outcome) would be the jumped on excuse rather than the actual reason, if you know what I mean?

AlwaysInMotion · 02/01/2019 08:51

I'm a remainer but I think it would result in a lot of people becoming disenfranchised and possibly result in greater swings towards extreme right wing parties.

TeaForDad · 02/01/2019 08:55

A demonstration that the will of the people means nothing to those ruling us?

Satsumaeater · 02/01/2019 08:56

Yes we lose face and look rather silly but I don't think we're nearly as important or interesting to other countries as people think we are and will be yesterday's news very quickly.

Better than the alternative - unless we join the EEA, in which case we become a rule taker not a rule maker but at least we don't lose out on the benefits of those rules.

frumpety · 02/01/2019 08:58

To be fair to the population of the UK , only about a fifth actually voted to leave and that fifth didn't give a mandate to the Government to be so utterly incompetent. I am embarrassed by the Government, and the opposition. I am not embarrassed by being a UK citizen Smile

I thought it was interesting that there was a small pro-brexit demo led by Tommy Robinson and some other anti-Muslim activists. Skinhead types.
I know many people who voted brexit ‘because of the muslims’ - and they are still pro-brexit.
The downside would be pissing them off I suppose.

JacquesHammer · 02/01/2019 09:02

What we need is no second referendum, the government to decide its untenable because,l sovereignty innit.

There wouldn’t be riots. About 6 blokes would tour the country “demonstrating”.

frumpety · 02/01/2019 09:05

Will of the people has changed TeaForDad , how do we ensure the will of the people is still adhered to ?
