They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

Poor people? Hmm

AlaskanOilBaron · 01/01/2019 10:40

Some of them will be paid overtime and wouldn't thank you for it!

PurpleDaisies · 01/01/2019 10:41

Didn’t everyone have a day off with family a week ago?

AlaskanOilBaron · 01/01/2019 10:41

Why shouldn't someone be around to take my money if I want to buy something today?

AlaskanOilBaron · 01/01/2019 10:42

I desperately would like to get away from my family. Wink

Lwmommy · 01/01/2019 10:42

They are open because the british high street is dying due to online sales and they need to get as many sales as possible to stay solvent. They hope that by opening on days like boxing day and new years day they will get the people who are on leave from work to shop.

KC225 · 01/01/2019 10:42

Are you a regular on this board? Not everyone enjoys spending time with their family.

MaltedMilk88 · 01/01/2019 10:43

Not sure I agree with this..
I used to relish working Christmas and New Year, it got me away from my family who I wasn't on good terms with at the time and I was compensated very well over a normal working day.
For every person that doesn't want to work I bet there is another that is more than happy for the escape / needing the additional money etc.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 10:43

Nanynjobs require working over Xmas and new yr. We do them knowing the drill losing hours does us no favours

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 10:44

No most people don't get any extra pay, not unless they are on a contract from 15 years ago!

Some poor people who aren't working today may well be in shops are they are warm places open to the public when many libraries, galleries etc are still closed. Heating a house is expensive and being indoors all day gets claustrophobic for many.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 10:44

The problem is lots are forced to work it.

No everyone didn’t have a day off with family.....pubs are open throughout the season, restaurants, and of course hospitals, police, fire..........

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 10:45

What poor people?

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/01/2019 10:45

@Dementedswan

She obviously meant poor as in 'awww, poor we thing. That's such a shame' rather than poor as in, no money.

Shimy · 01/01/2019 10:45

Hmm..that will include all pub staff, train operators, nurses, docto, bus drivers etc then everyone will truly be at home with family.

ReaganSomerset · 01/01/2019 10:46

No, if anything go to the shops intentionally. More highstreet footfall means less chance of the shopworkers being made redundant. Make fewer online purchases if you want to help.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2019 10:46

I don't think OP meant 'poor' as in no money, they meant 'poor' as in they had to work today.

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 10:46

Online shops would still be open which requires people to work, Ive just done the Christmas and new years period working for one. When they're having to compete with online they're not going to shut.
Also your currently posting on a platform that will have people working, so need to boycott this too.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2019 10:49

When you apply for any job you tend to know what sort of work pattern is involved.

squee123 · 01/01/2019 10:53

Shops need as much business as they can get or all the staff working in them are going to be looking for new jobs before long. It would probably be more productive for us all to support the shops by going in to a bricks and mortar one rather than shopping online so that the people working in them are employed by a sustainable business.

Darkestnight · 01/01/2019 10:53

I work in retail and didn't enjoy working over Xmas but it's a job I had to do and now I've been given a week off soon paid I'm happy Grin

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 10:54

Ah 'poor people' having to work?

Yeah, we are not all like that. Some of us even enjoy it.

hamzilla · 01/01/2019 10:54

A lot of people don't actually give a shit about New Year's Day and don't see it as a family day. I certainly don't.

ragged · 01/01/2019 10:54

Shop workers are paid hourly not salary... aren't they?

So today is a day to earn extra ££. Why take that away from them?
