They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

I used to love working New Year's Day/eve Xmas day. Time spent with work friends was better than family back then Grin

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:44

How much shopping would he achievable anyway when the delivery drivers clock off at 4 on Friday and drop by sometime Monday afternoon.

Are customers meant to navigate trollies round pallets of defrosting food cos nonones coming to put it away?

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 11:44

Online shopping doesn't require workers working around the clock if deliverys are only sent out on mon- Fri

Grin yes they do, I'm one that worked Christmas night for one. It's not just packers that work for online shops. Lots need a variety of workers constantly for various parts of the system.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/01/2019 11:45

@Rosepetalgeranium

You ignored my question. When I was a student, Saturday and Sunday were the only days I could work at my job. My other option would have been uni from 9 till 5 (with random breaks between classes) then working in a bar every night and being too exhausted to actually do well in class.

What would your suggestion be? Should I have just not eaten for 4 years so I didn't need to work? Or should I have worked nights and failed my classes?

Momo18 · 01/01/2019 11:47

Poor people?! I know a few people who work in shops with fully paid of mortgages, holidays a few times a year etc. It is a big offensive to call retail workers poor people. Also the ones who are struggling might need the extra work.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:47

Easy. Fail classes given the teachers won't be able to plan anything anyway. No work at home either Confused

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:47

Maybe when you were a student you could do unskilled work in a hospital or something that needs to be open? Unlike shops.

Ok so that covers the pickers and drivers. How the fuck do you think the stuff gets from field to factory to warehouse to shelf?

Seriously, give up now OP. It's that thing about being in a hole.

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 11:48

Sundays should be shut too and half days on Saturdays, no one has any more money to spend if they are open longer!

Sure. Just kill the high street stone dead. I mean it’s on its way - why not just speed up the process Confused

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 11:48

Are you really that stupid?

PurpleDaisies · 01/01/2019 11:49

Can I have answer to when people who work full time during the week are supposed to go shopping?

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 11:49

Give it up OP. It was an ill advised position as you must know by now.

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 11:50

Obviously after work: I mean you don’t need to spend time with your family after all, it’s only retail workers.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:50

Online apparently. Except if they finish when you do I'm.not sure how that helps.

Guess they could leave the entire shop in the shed and it can go rotten in the summer

PurpleDaisies · 01/01/2019 11:51

Obviously after work: I mean you don’t need to spend time with your family after all, it’s only retail workers.

I finish at 6pm most days and couldn’t be at the shopping centre until 6.30pm.

kmc1111 · 01/01/2019 11:53

Some people actually like to work and make money.

When I worked in retail, working all weekend plus late shifts and public holidays is what provided me with the money to save. Without those hours I’d have spent years just barely scraping by with not a cent left at the end of the month. Instead I was able to buy my first house, travel a bit and fund my further education.

Biggerknickersagain · 01/01/2019 11:53

They don’t deserve higher wages or more days off! NHS workers/ Emergency Services/ Carers / military and similar deserve higher wages and more days off!

Yes absolutely they do, but why so down on retail/hospitality staff? Why don't we deserve a bit extra over the festive season? Or days off? Or in fact, enough money to live on? It's people like you that make the job 10 times worse than it needs be.

‘Shop workers/ waiters deserve higher wages’ - 🤔 oh I’m sorry - how many lives did you save/change today? In what way did your stacking jumpers in size order whilst chatting about X factor aid humanity?

So basically, if you're in a service industry, then you don't deserve a wage that's enough to live on? Or decent conditions? What a lovely sentiment!

I have actually saved a life in the course of my job, I gave CPR to a collapsed guest, until help arrived. Of course the paramedics who stabilised him, the doctors who got him better and the nurses that nursed him deserve more money than I get, to reflect their knowledge and training, but that doesn't mean I'm not worth decent wages and conditions!

You clearly look down on those in the service industries when there's absolutely no reason to. Not all of us object to working those days, quite a few accept it as part and parcel, and just get on with it. We also put up with being patronised by attitudes like yours, who seem to think we're below you!

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:53

The superstores are open 24 hours Monday to Friday. That's quite enough for the people that work full time which is usually 7.5-8 a day.

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 11:53

I have an onlin shop and have my cut off for Christmas orders on 22nd and tell people no more will be sent out until January.

That may for small online shops, places like amazon and other big retailers would come back to the most ridiculous backlog, would be beyond impractical.

TornFromTheInside · 01/01/2019 11:53

Let's boycott all shops and services then none of us will need to go to work. Wonder how that will work out.

The premise of this thread is ludicrous. It's got 'wind up' written all over it.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:53

6?
Better start taking a sleeping bag to work. The parking attendant clocks off at 5 remember. You would be locked in all night

LellyMcKelly · 01/01/2019 11:54

If you don’t want to shop on New Year’s Day then don’t, but it’s a bit odd to assume that nobody else will want to work or shop today.

PurpleDaisies · 01/01/2019 11:54

I can’t buy everything at a supermarket.

Redglitter · 01/01/2019 11:54

Sundays should be shut too and half days on Saturdays

Now you're being ridiculous

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 11:55

Ah so it’s only retail workers who want to spend time with their family. Someone who has worked all day doesn’t?

Are you usually so daft?
