They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

"Will you be using any electricity or flushing the loo? There are people behind the scenes making the systems behind these services happen for you on public holidays"

Wow Memories are really short arent they UK Power Networks got fined for their abysmal performance at Christmas 2013 due to leaving people without power for days on end. Turned out they had given too many staff time off. So an essential service was not available that year but the shops were open Boxing Day and NYD that year (the ones with power that is) so all was good Xmas Hmm

And i was recently told by the wife of someone who works for UKPN that prior to the 2013 shit show there was NO ONE on standby for the Christmas period. Now there is but they learnt the hard way.

The "essential services" are available line gets trotted out on here yet it has already been proven that its not always the case.

This country often keeps getting priorites wrong.

More people stand up than sit down when working supermarket shop floors. We have approx 10 on tills. They sit down. Then there are 3/4 who work between self scan and scan as you shop. Then 2/3 time dependant on kiosk. Then there are up to 10 online pickers wandering about. 1/2 trolley collectors. 2 cleaners. Each section has at least 2 staff stocking shelves and organising products. There are the bakerss then the butcher, fish and deli counters. All standing. You will also see at least 6 of the management team on shop floor. Usually it's a manager/supervisor combo. That's just one Tesco store. I'm sure there are plenty other 'standers' I have missed.

I'm not arguing it's harder than any other type of work, but the suggestion that supermarket workers just sit down is hilarious.

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 17:44

You do realise my comment about sitting down was in reply to the poster who was complying about shifts in a call centre? Do people in call centres stand up all day?

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 17:44

Complaining*

PhilomenaNewYearButterfly · 01/01/2019 17:44

We spend most of Saturday in Sainsbury's as a family, we have breakfast in the café, look at toys and then do the food shop. We're not usually home before 2pm.

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 17:47

You do realise I can post whatever I want? I didn't quote you, thanks, bye.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/01/2019 17:47

You said call centres/shops fission

If you had just said call centres i wouldnt have said anything

Its the shop bit i was referring to

Bertiebitch32 · 01/01/2019 18:03

Op I think that us poor folk wouldn't be happy about loosing the opportunity to work on double time you know us being on the bread line. It saves me having to try and make ends meet by selling my body for a tenner Hmm

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/01/2019 18:04

I agree with others

I think the OP didnt mean poor as in has no money

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 01/01/2019 18:20

Working New Years Day wouldn’t bother me but Boxing Day would.

Darkestnight · 01/01/2019 19:00

Sadly some of us who work in retail don't get double time. I just found out I'll get a extra crappy £2 a hour for my boxing day shift I did and guess what I won't be doing bank holidays again and I've already booked Easter as a holiday

Laiste · 01/01/2019 19:11

I'm still interested in the OPs logic behind retail staff not having to work weekends because it's non essential work (we can all go in the evening apparently) and how much they need family time and yet this doesn't apply to gym staff Confused

You're on your own today 'cos everyone's buggered off to work then OP. Maybe they should have chosen another job? (one at the gym perhaps?) Or maybe they're quite happy to get out of the house?

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 19:19

Maybe if you read my posts you would understand it.

The gym isn't open today and I have never said I wanted it to be open today or on any other bank holiday.

I said I wanted it open on the non bank holiday days between Christmas and New yearBiscuit

OP posts:
Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/01/2019 19:19

darkest

I dont get anything extra for boxing day

I only work part time and as such my hours are good for me...but everyone has to do a Christmas eve or boxing day shift ( and NYE and NYD)

Grace212 · 01/01/2019 19:25

OP yes you said that about the non bank holiday days

but we are curious about the rules you suggest for shop opening on weekends and if you'd apply the same rules to the gym, that's all.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/01/2019 19:28

I said I wanted it open on the non bank holiday days between Christmas and New year

Including Saturday and Sunday which you want shops to be shut.

You are being deliberetly obtuse.

Have your Biscuit back.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 19:36

Let's not expand this to Saturday and Sunday opening times, that's for another thread and confusing the matter here.

Have your Biscuit back piglet I never said I wanted shops closed on Saturday.

OP posts:
Grace212 · 01/01/2019 19:40

OP, you said you wanted shops closed on a Sunday and half day on Saturday....or did I imagine that?! So just wondering if you think same rules should apply to gyms.

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 19:41

Let's not expand this to Saturday and Sunday opening times, that's for another thread and confusing the matter here.

Have your* back piglet I never said I wanted shops closed on Saturday.

Sundays should be shut too and half days on Saturdays, no one has any more money to spend if they are open longer!

OP, not only did YOU expand this to Saturday and Sunday, YOU also said they should be half day Saturday. Later on you said people should only shop Monday to Friday.

You really should have taken the advice that was given by so many people above and given up!

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 19:42

Let's not expand this to Saturday and Sunday opening times, that's for another thread and confusing the matter here

YOU expanded the conversation Confused

You said this earlier ...

Sundays should be shut too and half days on Saturdays

But now you want to sweep that under the carpet because it demonstrates your hypocrisy.

Have another one of these Biscuit

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 19:42

Yes a half day on Saturday, not closed all day.

I'll talk about Saturday and Sunday on another thread, it was a mistake to move on the topic on this one.

Just about bank holidays here

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 19:43

The superstores are open 24 hours Monday to Friday. That's quite enough for the people that work full time which is usually 7.5-8 a day.

There you are OP ^

Monday to Friday.

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 19:44

I'll talk about Saturday and Sunday on another thread, it was a mistake to move on the topic on this one.

You mean it's made you look even sillier than before?

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 19:45

You even made an absurd suggestion that people who can't go to the supermarket Monday to Friday have their shopping delivered to an amazon locker Confused

Laiste · 01/01/2019 19:49

Why talk about it on another thread? We're all here now.

It's quite simple. Do you think gyms should be shut half days on a sat and all day sunday?
