No think we should all boycott the shops so next year the poor people don't need to work

They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

It would be fine if workers were given a choice but in many shops and sectors they are forced to do it or they will lose their jobs.

Ollivander84 · 01/01/2019 11:32

I'm going food shopping. I worked Christmas Day and Boxing Day and then the 27/28 in another job, then back to first job for 29/30, then yesterday too. It's my first day off and the fridge is bare!

OutragedERIC · 01/01/2019 11:34

All those people working in Tesco I'm sure would rather not work

You have a very odd view about retail workers Confused

The British high street is on its knees. The last thing the bricks and mortar shops need now is for more people to sit at home, probably doing online shopping instead.

PurpleMoon5 · 01/01/2019 11:34

Plus some people here are very misinformed.

If the shop is closed, staff who normally work that day would HAVE to take a holiday day if they wanted to get paid. On Christmas for example, if you were down to work Tuesdays, you would have no choice but to take a holiday day to still be paid while the shop was closed.

Closing on New Year's Day would force staff to take another day of annual leave they may not wish to. Also, when I worked at a supermarket I was always asked if I wanted to work the bank holiday or if I'd like to take the holiday. If I didn't want to, I only had to say no and someone else would be very willing to swoop in for the time and a half pay.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:34

Why can't the emergency workers shop monday-friday when most are open 24 hours? They are working long shifts I expect but not 24 hours!

Amazon have a lock where the driver can enter your house to drop off things. I think that will come in for food shops too.

In what way did your stacking jumpers in size order whilst chatting about X factor aid humanity?

Well given that we live in a capitalist society and we need tax revenues from capitalist enterprise to fund the 'worthy' stuff, then quite significantly.

How do you think the NHS is funded?

I'm not necessarily advocating for higher wages for retail staff, but no need to be a dick about it.

Ollivander84 · 01/01/2019 11:34

I should add I work in a car dealership - we closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day and today and that's it, we work Saturdays too
My second job is as a carer and that's 365 days a year

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:36

Why should they pull a 12 hour shift then go to Tesco when they could go on their Sunday off?

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:36

How am I misinformed? I was replying to someone that said they shouldn't work at tesco if they don't like the hours, I don't think it's a reach to say nmw retail workers have lots of options open to them.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:36

Don't have 🙊

I did boycott on boxing day for this reason (my local shop didn't even pay overtime). I think people do get quite useless at being organised and buying things in advance. Most people should be able to survive for one day without running to the shops.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:37

But these jobs are what keeps a roof over their heads. Food on the table etc

You are so unbelievably patronising

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 11:38

Eh so your plan would be to shut physical shops Saturday and Sunday (goodbye shops) and have people shop online (which still requires workers working around the clock) as the shops are shut and get amazon or similar to deliver it. Confused

RestingBitchFaced · 01/01/2019 11:39

Agree OP, I can live without going into a shop on Xmas day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. They should be closed in my opinion

MrMeSeeks · 01/01/2019 11:39

I agree. Not all places pay extra for new years or boxing day.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:39

No you don't understand. People still have the same money to spend even if shops are closed all weekend.

If the shops are opened less they can increase the pay per hour. See think about how beneficial it would be!

OP posts:
GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:41

Not that beneficial. I'd be fucked for starters

I rely on evenings and weekends and Overtime in the holidays when do is off work.

What do I do....

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 11:41

Why can't the emergency workers shop monday-friday when most are open 24 hours?

Oh FFS

They are working long shifts I expect but not 24 hours!

No, but most of them have families and whatnot to juggle as well. I worked opposite shifts to my DH for years when the DC were small. Fitting in time to get to a shop was not a particularly easy thing to do.

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 11:41

@Gwen

I’m a very nice person - but I’ve worked retail for years and don’t think it’s worth more than £7 an hour minimum wage- sorry!

How about we raise the entire wage of nurses instead - think of we’re discussing pay rises/more time off- there are ALOT of people ahead of shop workers in that queue

GoJetterGirl · 01/01/2019 11:41

Sundays closed and half days on Saturdays?!

I’m sure most of the teens that work the weekends for pocket money won’t thank you a jot, as for me, the overtime is funding the few luxuries I can afford because of it!

Ah so simple.

If the shops are opened less they can increase the pay per hour. See think about how beneficial it would be!

You should probably give up now OP

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:42

Online shopping doesn't require workers working around the clock if deliverys are only sent out on mon- Fri. I have an onlin shop and have my cut off for Christmas orders on 22nd and tell people no more will be sent out until January.

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 01/01/2019 11:42

No you don't understand. People still have the same money to spend even if shops are closed all weekend.

And you don’t understand many workers physically cannot get to the shops if they aren’t open on the weekend. That means buying everything on the internet and the death of the high street.

BumDisease · 01/01/2019 11:44

"How about we raise the entire wage of nurses instead - think of we’re discussing pay rises/more time off- there are ALOT of people ahead of shop workers in that queue"

The only person comparing the two here is you.
