They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

I've just been looking up which shops are open to go out. So pleased some are open.

It's a nice day and I the telly's pants. Grin

planespotting · 01/01/2019 11:10

@Laiste what if yours is closed!? I can't deal with the responsibility!

KonekoBasu · 01/01/2019 11:10

It's all a load of bollocks anyway. No one is forced to do a job. If you're not happy, change it.

Where are all these other jobs available for people to just walk into? Are they all highly paid and with reasonable hours as well? I'm amazed there's anyone working in retail at all with such an easy to get alternative!

lunar1 · 01/01/2019 11:10

Why are people working in shops seen as so much more important bu some people. Many industries remain working throughout the holidays, all with an increased workload. Hotels, restaurants, hospitals, fire, police, ambulance, I could go on and on.

Why single out shop workers?

Bambamber · 01/01/2019 11:12

What about all of us that don't work in retail and still work bank holidays? We will still have to work if the shops shut? What about us? Won't anybody think about us? Grin

Notacluethisxmas · 01/01/2019 11:12

What about the people who need that Sunday shift?

Their partner works during the week etc and they rely on that money?

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 01/01/2019 11:13

Awesome! Can everyone please also boycott getting ill/the hospitals today so that DP (doctor) can spend it with us next year too?

Oh dear, thought not! And since he’s at work today and I have no other family close by....I’ll be going out to shop/eat!!!

Or would you rather I spent the day sat alone at home, to give ‘shop workers’ the day off OP?

😂 God I’m fed up of people thinking retail/low wage workers (this was me all through teens/uni) deserve the sodding earth!

It’s not a hard job! I think back to my days in shops and think wow- I never knew how easy I had it!!!

They don’t deserve higher wages or more days off! NHS workers/ Emergency Services/ Carers / military and similar deserve higher wages and more days off!

‘Shop workers/ waiters deserve higher wages’ - 🤔 oh I’m sorry - how many lives did you save/change today? In what way did your stacking jumpers in size order whilst chatting about X factor aid humanity?

IT DIDNT now take your £7 an hour and six off!

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:13

Well you don't see people tucked away in warehouses do you....

These same people giving very patronising sympathy to 90 percent of the countries work force are probably also the same dick heads who keep us all up all.night with fucking fireworks...

Not thinking about people having to work then are you...

BalloonDinosaur · 01/01/2019 11:13

I work in the NHS, last year I worked Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day and even managed to land the 13hr night shift when the clocks went back.

But it's my job, I knew that when I applied, yes it sucks sometimes, but I have to say, having had Christmas off this year, I'm almost glad to be going back to working it again next year! Turns out work is more relaxing than a family Christmas.

People not going to the shops won't make any difference, and as some have said, it won't impress those people on OT who actually are getting paid more to be there!

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 11:13

YANBU. I went into a shop on New Year's Day a couple of years ago, just hanging around while I was waiting to meet friends. I hadn't intended to go shopping and didn't expect them to be open. I could hear the staff complaining about having to work and decided I wouldn't do it again. We can cope without shopping for a couple of days a year - talking clothes shops here, food a bit different.

*sod off

KonekoBasu · 01/01/2019 11:14

lunar Well, emergency services are necessary (and I imagine largely paid more than minimum wage). The rest aren't, I'd be happy for anything not essential to be closed for a day.

planespotting - lol. Still sat on my arse at the mo.

I googled to try and find out. It's not 100% easy to tell for sure online tbh. I won't hold you responsible :) I think they probably are.

FissionChips · 01/01/2019 11:15

I had to wash the dead body of a resident a few years ago on new years.
Shop workers have it easy.

Birdsgottafly · 01/01/2019 11:15

PurpleDaisies
"Didn’t everyone have a day off with family a week ago?"

Many Off Licences, McCall's, type shops, opened. The Staff weren't happy about it, but wouldn't let us start a petition etc, because they were scared about losing their jobs.

Apparently they sold a few bottles of mixers and two bottles of Wine. The profits wouldn't have covered the electricity used.

I think that the way Sunday trading was forced in, by the shops breaking the law, with no comeback, was a national disgrace.

All the promises of work contracts not Including late night and Sunday as standard, soon went out of the window.

"My dad wants to work it", the old "I'm alright Jack" , attitude.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:17

‘Shop workers/ waiters deserve higher wages’ - 🤔 oh I’m sorry - how many lives did you save/change today? In what way did your stacking jumpers in size order whilst chatting about X factor aid humanity?
Oh they don't care enough to not go out get drunk and fall down or het themselves into a state needing an ambulance either.

Utter hypocritical nonsense.

Of they gave a shit they'd not be a burden on the very people they are virtue signalling sympathy for Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 01/01/2019 11:17

"since when is spending New Year’s Day with family a thing"

Always was, like at other times. Which our working hours are slowly destroying.

Dothehappydance · 01/01/2019 11:17

I worked in retail 20years ago and worked NYD, it isn't a new thing, and I didn't get extra, it was only the full timers that did.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 11:18

"People not going to the shops won't make any difference"

Of course it will. If the managers see that there's no demand on NYD, they won't bother opening.
And you really can't compare a shop to a hospital.

pineapple22 · 01/01/2019 11:19

@KonekoBasu I understand there are going to be people that do want the time off, of course, but nobody forces anybody to get a job that includes bank holidays or weekends working. Nobody forces anybody either to visit shops on bank holidays. But if you're talking about shutting the shops on these days, then you're talking about forcing people that would rather work to sit at home remembering how miserable and lonely they are. It's not even like they can would be able to do anything to take their mind off their loneliness - because everything would be shut! So I do have sympathy for people who want to be home but have to work, but they knew what they were signing up for with the job. And this is coming from somebody who's worked many a Christmas Day btw

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/01/2019 11:19

*They really don't need to be open today

They aren’t open here in Scotland.*

Bloody Asda’s open in my part of Scotland 🙄

delboysskinandblister · 01/01/2019 11:20

Sainsburys are open til 6pm, Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda too. And their cafe's are open until about 3pm. Smile

Just Lidl and Aldi are shut.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 11:21

It's the distruction of society all this snipping away at time together.

If you want to go shopping today sure do it, but this thread is about solidarity with those forced to work and taken away from leisure time 🌷

Sundays should be shut too and half days on Saturdays, no one has any more money to spend if they are open longer!
