They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

I’m a bit low on bread I was going to wait until tomorrow but this thread has inspired me to go today. Xmas Wink

StephenQueenBooks · 01/01/2019 10:55

Miss out on double time and receiving the hours back as holiday....and not having to spend time with my family?!

You're crazy, I love working over the holidays!

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2019 10:57

I am not sure exactly which shops are open TBH. Waitrose isn't, and Wilkinson's isn't.
Morrisons and Tesco might be.

Phillipa12 · 01/01/2019 10:58

Im working today and i worked last night, no i dont get extra pay and i offered to work. There are plenty of people who have to work today, im one of many, but i knew the work patterns when i took the job on, one of which is no annual leave over the xmas period!

expatinspain · 01/01/2019 10:58

Shall we boycott restaurants and bars too, as many of them also have to work? How about petrol stations? Hotels?

blondebella · 01/01/2019 10:59

All of us who work have to be downgraded things we don't want to do sometimes. It's called life!

blondebella · 01/01/2019 11:00

Wtf have to do things we don't want to do.

Autocorrect fail

planespotting · 01/01/2019 11:01

I have always worked NY day Hmm
Actually, we were meant to take turns but I volunteered because I didn't have DCs.
I changed jobs and I don't anymore.
DH does.
Doctors, nurses, fire fighters, pub stuff, attraction stuff, some museums...

It really is not a drama

Laiste · 01/01/2019 11:01

Are Costa open today does anyone know? Really fancy getting out for a coffee and a bit of toast.

Pinkyyy · 01/01/2019 11:02

I'm sure if you just hand out some of your mountain of cash then none of those poor people need work again, ever.

pineapple22 · 01/01/2019 11:02

I'm really not enjoying this recent train of thought that shops should shut on Boxing Day and New Year's so that the workers can spend more time with family.

For a start, bold of people to assume everybody has family to spend time with. Christmas Day is a miserable day for many and I hate the thought of extending that day of pain and loneliness for certain people.

Secondly, for many people (myself included) the extra pay of the bank holidays is very much needed and carries us through the holiday period.

planespotting · 01/01/2019 11:02

@Laiste we just drove past one that looked open

LakieLady · 01/01/2019 11:02

I've only set foot in shops once since Christmas Eve, so I'm doing my bit!

I'm unconvinced that people will spend more overall just because the shops are open on a public holiday. I think that poor sales are down to the rise of internet shopping and the fact that an awful lot of people have less spare money these days.

since when is spending New Year’s Day with family a thingthough? I’ve never heard of people having New Year’s Day traditions (unless we’re talking sleeping off hangovers)

Omgineedanamechange · 01/01/2019 11:06

Spend time with their families doing what exactly? Cos obviously all public transport and garages for petrol, plus restaurants, museums, play centres etc will also be shut so those “poor people” can also spend time with their families too.

Laiste · 01/01/2019 11:07

planespotting Aha! Thank you. Good. I shall get dressed! Grin

tequilasunset · 01/01/2019 11:07

Why is it only retail workers people feel sorry for?

What about all the other workers who have to work bank holidays, weekends etc?

It's all a load of bollocks anyway. No one is forced to do a job. If you're not happy, change it.

I certainly don't lose sleep over 'poor people' having to work today.

KonekoBasu · 01/01/2019 11:07

pineapple22 DH gets no extra, had Christmas Day and Boxing Day off and then working eight days. He actually would like to spend some time with his family while DS is off school given that he works most weekends so misses out on a lot.

WhatsUpHun · 01/01/2019 11:07

again.............?

Tiscold · 01/01/2019 11:08

Why should it be shut? My dad wants to work it, he gets time and a half today so is earning nearly 12.50 an hour which is very helpful

mmmgoats · 01/01/2019 11:08

poor people? Wtf

greendale17 · 01/01/2019 11:09

Yes I agree OP. I deliberately don’t go shopping on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day for this very reason.

Omgineedanamechange · 01/01/2019 11:09

Oh, anx I’m at work, not in retail, and very much looking forward to taking my lieu day off at a time of my choosing in the summer, rather than enforced on a miserable winter day when if OP had their way everything would be shut.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 11:09
