For me have to stay up until New year is over so like the second or third of January they have to be up over new year as it is still the holiday never understand people who take them down on boxing day!

AcrossthePond55 · 29/12/2018 17:07

Normally New Year's Day. But this year DH is going snow-camping and I need his help disassembling the tree. It's our first year with an artificial one and I'm not sure how it goes apart!

So I'm debating doing everything else and just leaving the tree up undecorated, or just letting it all stay up until he gets back.

dementedma · 29/12/2018 17:27

I must admit I do love sitting in the lamplight by the twinkly tree in the evening, but have made a start on the rest by recyling the cards and throwing out the now wilting greenery and holly

Dermymc · 29/12/2018 17:33

Twelfth night here.
As a pp said, Christmas is the first day of the Christmas season, not the last.

Snooky1 · 29/12/2018 21:21

I'm so confused by people taking their decorations down on boxing day. They are being taking down half way through Christmas. Christmas lasts till 12th night. Taking them down boxing day is like taking them down Christmas morning or Christmas eve??

Parker231 · 29/12/2018 22:25

Snooki - not everyone follows that timescale. For us Christmas ends on Boxing Day - 12th night doesn’t mean anything to us. Now that Christmas is over and we’re back at work, we’re looking forward to the new year.

Tink2007 · 29/12/2018 22:30

Ours went up on the 4th of November and they won’t come down until 2nd of Jan.

Mulberry72 · 29/12/2018 22:51

Ours came down yesterday, sick to the back teeth of the fucking things! We came away on holiday today and the cleaner is coming while we’re away so she’ll be able to give it a really good fo without the bastard tree in the way 👍🏻

WithAllIntenseAndPurposes · 29/12/2018 23:08

Parker just a question what does Christmas mean to you?

bigchris · 29/12/2018 23:09

Ours went up on the 4th of November

Before bonfire night Shock

youarenotkiddingme · 29/12/2018 23:12

I do mine NYE and have a good tidy up.

I then make a NYR it'll stay that way which is usually broken by the 2nd!

New Years Day

It's a tradition here , after breakfast we pack it all away , gets put in the loft then we have NYD dinner..

DameSquashalot · 29/12/2018 23:20

I like to take them down before I go back to work. I've got a nice long break this time... 🌲🎄🎅🤶🛷⛄

Parker231 · 29/12/2018 23:22

WIthAll - for us it’s our DT’s home from Uni, my parents, DSis and her family are visiting from Belgium and DH’s family are here from Canada and the US. We’ve hosted our annual party the weekend before Christmas with our friends and a Christmas Day lunch at our house for 14 of our family. Lots of good food and drinks and lots of presents to give and receive.

Mummylife2018 · 29/12/2018 23:23

Today is only the 5th day of Christmas....? There's 12 days of Christmas!!!

When are we taking our Xmas decs down ?
ozymandiusking · 29/12/2018 23:34

I think people are putting their trees up sooner and sooner is because the shops put theirs up so soon.
Surely mid December is early enough. It makes Christmas seem such a long way off for the children if done to soon.

dementedma · 30/12/2018 08:48

i think for many people, including me, Christmas day is "Christmas" with all the excitement and joy in the run up. Boxing day is nice for a second day with family you didn't see on the day itself etc but after that, it's just all really flat and finished. I thoroughly enjoyed Christmas Eve and Chrstmas day but have been bored rigid ever since, sitting around after the event. Can't wait to get back to work and normality. Tree comes down probably NY day or the day after and itching to do it.

Parker231 · 30/12/2018 10:19

Mummylife - I would find it odd if someone wished me ‘Merry Christmas ‘ after Christmas Day. There seems to be two variations - leave them up to 12th night or take them down between Christmas and New Year - there’s no rule so everyone can do what suits them.

Debfronut · 30/12/2018 13:02

The 12 days of Christmas only applies if you follow the Jesus myth and stories. If you follow the Santa myth and stories or the pagan feast the holiday originated from Yule which was the 21st anytime after 25th seems OK to take them down.

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 30/12/2018 13:09

I took mine down on boxing day mostly because my dc were given a dolls house, play shop and pushchairs from relatives and I had no where to put everything. It's also my youngest birthday today and want her to feel like the day is all about her and not connected to Christmas. My friends call me scrooge though as in past years I've been know to put the Dec's up Christmas eve and take them down boxing day lol with 4dc and hyper dog it's too stress to have them up too long

DogMamma · 30/12/2018 13:19

Usually mine is down by now.... but in bed with bad cold. Can't wait to get house back to normal

Skyejuly · 30/12/2018 13:26

12 days mean nothing to me. Especially as it was just an adapted yule festival anyway. Birth of sun became son.

I hate them up after boxing day. Just feel s odd.

waitingforwombat · 30/12/2018 13:36

Fully enjoying Christmastide here!

Advent- 4 Sundays before Christmas day
Christmas- Christmas until Epiphany

With secularisation of Christmas we have turned advent (period waiting, looking forward to the coming of Christmas ) into Christmas (period feasting, rejoicing etc), so people are "done" by Boxing Day.

In our house advent is a distinct season, with advent wreath, advent calendars, advent candles and our advent box of books, nativity scenes etc come out. Decorate for Christmas when kids finish school, start celebrating Christmas Eve. Then party continues until Epiphany (or at least new year!).

GlomOfNit · 31/12/2018 00:02

Christmas isn't over! It lasts forbloodyever until Twelfth Night OR Epiphany (take your pick Wink ) and anyone taking their decs down on Christmas Day evening needs to be tied to a chair and played carols at whilst being made to chug eggnog, or something. Good god, joyless, much? Shock

Ours go up about ten days before Christmas Day, and will come down when I can be arsed. Maybe 5th, maybe 6th. I may play with fire and aim for the 7th. Kids don't go back to school until 9th Shock so I can't really wait until they're out of the way as I normally do. I like them up, I love the greenery and lights, and the house always seems sad and empty when they come down.

Christmasfairy07 · 31/12/2018 00:08

Used to be Jan 5th but the last couple of years, we’ve taken them down on New Years Day.
