To think I can have sex before period without getting pregnant.

I usually use condoms but around 2 days before my period I allow my partner to ejaculate inside me. He looks forward to this each month lol so I allow it as a treat.

I don’t want anymore children. I have been doing this for the past 2 years and seems to have worked so far.
I don’t do this anywhere near ovulation. Am I being risky?

YABU. Seriously? Xmas Hmm

Sleepyhead11 · 25/12/2018 12:19

I actually think you're probably OK if you know your own cycle. My GP said that if monitored correctly then avoiding sex around ovulation is pretty effective.

Weihnacht · 25/12/2018 12:21

I think if you track your cycle you're probably ok tbh. You do have to do it properly though so it's a fair bit of work.

MissSingerbrains · 25/12/2018 12:27

I don’t understand why some people freak out about the treat joke either OP - it makes sense to me Smile

I use a similar method and have been fine for years. Granted, the point about changing cycles in your 40s is worth thinking about.

gigi556 · 25/12/2018 12:36

Wow. I'm surprised by all the responses saying you are being risky!

I've successfully used natural family planning for 5 years. I would not consider it risky at all. It's impossible to get pregnant at that point. Once I'm sure I've ovulated no more condoms until my next period.

I actually find it sad that women are pushed hormonal contraception so readily when it has so many terrible side effects. Tracking your cycles is easy and effective. I've never fallen pregnant accidentally and when we've tried for a baby, I fell pregnant first time - no doubt because I knew when we needed to have sex.

keenkaren · 25/12/2018 12:37

Until the egg is out of your body there is always a risk so just after your period is probably safer to be honest.

ejaculating inside you as a treat

Confused eugh

adaline · 25/12/2018 13:07

It's impossible to get pregnant at that point.

No, it's not. It might have worked for you but loads of women have found themselves pregnant having sex at that point in their cycle. Spreading lies like this doesn't help.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 25/12/2018 13:15

@keenkaren totally not true. Just after your period is really dangerous. Sperm can live in you up to 6 days so from say a 6 day period, if you have sex on day 7 and 8 the sperm is still there on day 14, which is bang on mid cycle so when you'd expect to ovulate. Eggs on the other hand only last a day or two so just before your period is safest. But no one should really be relying on NFP if they aren't tracking properly. It has taken a year of doing Natural Cycles for me to be comfortable trusting the algorithm. Very happy with it as contraception and not pregnant yet.
I don't see what is wrong with ejaculation in you as a treat. I much prefer it to condoms as it feels very different and brings me much closer to my partner.

Birdie6 · 25/12/2018 13:29

If you don't want any more children and don't want to use hormonal contraception, why not get a tubal ligation or get him to have a vasectomy.

keenkaren · 25/12/2018 14:19

I don't think it's the act making people ick but that it's a "treat" like giving a kid an ice cream for being good or something. That sort of thing should be something you do because you fancy it, not as a reward.

Kumali · 25/12/2018 14:22

My friend has 3 children by this method. I'd be careful..

Somersetlady · 25/12/2018 14:31

Have your tubes tied? Or get your oh to have a vasectomy!

HildaZelda · 25/12/2018 14:38

Nah, you'll be fine OP, and if you do it standing up, you can't get pregnant at all Hmm

clockworklime · 25/12/2018 14:40

Envy - not envy

serialtester · 25/12/2018 14:58

Do you put the best penis beaker out so he knows it's ejaculation night?

Grannyannex · 25/12/2018 15:01

An egg often has a fertilisation window of 2 days, although sperm can live for up to a week

Ginandsonicscrewdriver · 25/12/2018 15:01

Try a mirena, the hormones are localised so less clot risk

fatbrows · 25/12/2018 15:03

I'm sorry if I sound really uneducated. What does an egg do in all that time while waiting for the period. I thought sperm could get to the egg at anytime between its release and the period.

What makes it so that in that time span, even though the egg is there, that it can't get fertilised?

The egg only survives for 24-48 hours after ovulation. If ovulation has definitely happened then the risk of conception between then and the next period is extremely low. The trouble is, it only takes one longer-than-usual cycle for disaster to strike...

Grannyannex · 25/12/2018 15:16

The egg is released usually mid cycle-ish bit only has the ability to be fertilised for a couple of days. Beyond that it’s not fertilisable

Ginandsonicscrewdriver · 25/12/2018 15:19

If you’re desperate to do this try something natural cycles. Although their failure rate is still pretty high (7% according to another thread where the poor OP was pregnant as a result of relying on —a more scientific process than you— an app.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 25/12/2018 15:25

You think an app is better than someone knowing their body?!

fatbrows · 25/12/2018 15:29

Thanks @Cel982

Sallygoroundthemoon · 25/12/2018 15:33

Of course an app is better than someone 'knowing' their body. The app relies on changes to basal temperature plus LH testing to detect ovulation. Temp has to be taken every day when you wake up. I have yet to meet someone who can tell their basal temp and LH without a thermometer or peeing on a strip...

My brother and SIL used the rythm/pull out method succesfully for 5 years. Then they accidentally conceived my nephew when SIL was 42. She now has the coil (my DN was too scared to get the snip). Sooooo it's not 100% a sure method. Things and feelings change when you age.
