To think I can have sex before period without getting pregnant.

Applecrumble79 · 24/12/2018 00:15

I usually use condoms but around 2 days before my period I allow my partner to ejaculate inside me. He looks forward to this each month lol so I allow it as a treat.

I don’t want anymore children. I have been doing this for the past 2 years and seems to have worked so far.
I don’t do this anywhere near ovulation. Am I being risky?

It's unlikely but not impossible. I got pregnant on the day my period finished (you would think that was impossible). At the other end of the cycle there's always the possibility of an unusually long cycle, these happen often when you get older (I can be 24 days one month then 50 days the next, was just ready to celebrate finishing my periods for good that month when boom another one!)
If you don't want kids use contraception or send your dp to the gp!

If natural family planning is followed correctly, it can be up to 99% effective. This means that 1 woman in 100 who use natural family planning will get pregnant in 1 year.

C&P'd from NHS website. The key thing is to do it correctly. To learn your body so that you can be confident you are avoiding ovulation. It takes work in the first few months, and shouldnt be relied on until you are sure you have learned the method, but yes it does work and done correctly is no more risky than taking the pill or using a condom.

The issue of women getting pregnant when using natural family planning is more often than not down to them not fully understanding their cycles or "oh just this once wont hurt" during the fertile period.

Loopyloopy · 24/12/2018 01:20

Your cycles can change as you get older. If you ovulate late one cycle, you could certainly get caught out! Especially if your ovulation symptoms are like your pre menstrual symptoms.

Fatasfook · 24/12/2018 01:57

Chances are low but there is still always the chance. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime

DinoDave · 24/12/2018 02:16

Yabu...if you ovulate late one month, you’re done for.

We do this too and have for years but when I’m actually on my period. Chances of pregnancy are miniscule, it’s a much lower risk.

VanGoghsDog · 24/12/2018 02:19

This was exactly how I ended up having a termination years ago.

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 02:21

Christ.

TigerQuoll · 24/12/2018 02:27

Get your husband to have the snip or use a diaphragm.

Shame you can't have the implant, I love it as I get no periods at all. I wish it existed when I was a teenager/early 20s as they were excruciating back then (bedridden for 24 hours minimum every month).

Racecardriver · 24/12/2018 02:38

I got pregnant the day before my period. It happens. If you don’t want more children and don’t want an abortion then use contraception.

Graphista · 24/12/2018 02:40

"I don’t agree though. Conception can only happen during ovulation." Wrong! Sperm can live up to 5 days post intercourse. Egg release and pace of travel is extremely hard to track.

"Yes I track it roughly." So you've no idea then really when you ovulate!

"I just sense ovulation. I know the signs." Are you REALLY that medically ignorant?

Thank god my 17 yr old Dd has more sense!

chardonm · 24/12/2018 02:40

I agree with you OP

It's because "Vatican Roulette" is so reliable, that traditional Catholic countries are noted for having very small families

Xmas Grin

Well, you tell us OP...in 9months

jessstan2 · 24/12/2018 02:53

You can buy something that gives a reliable indication of ovulation - Boots & Lloyds are reputable pharmacies and good with things like that. Thing is, you may be able to detect ovulation but it's not a reliable method, anything can throw a cycle off kilter which results in people ovulating irregularly.

Please don't take chances.

(You can buy anti spermicidal pessaries which are fine as long as you only have intercourse after insertion, none of the 'frills')

Butteredghost · 24/12/2018 02:58

OP I agree with you. There is only 2-3 days each month you can fall pregnant. If you have a regular cycle and take note of signs like cm, then yes it's more than safe to have unprotected sex right before your period.

The whole "there is a high chance of falling pregnant on any day of your cycle" thing is just a made up lie we tell to teenagers in health class because we don't want them to take risks.

On these threads there are always people who claim they had sex once and the man didn't finish, and it was during their period, then had three more periods then became pregnant from that. I call bs, sorry!

Butteredghost · 24/12/2018 03:04

I believe most people who get pregnant in the method OP describes actually either don't use contraception at all, or got pregnant on purpose, and don't want to admit it for whatever reason. So it seems like it's much more common that it really is.

AlexaAmbidextra · 24/12/2018 03:20

You allow him this as a treat? Just buy him a bar of Cadbury’s Whole Nut. It’s a damn sight safer.

user1473878824 · 24/12/2018 03:24

@Butteredghost but she doesn’t. She “roughly” tracks it. Also so much about this is balls.

BumbleBeee69 · 24/12/2018 03:37

Is this Thread a Joke Hmm

Sleepdeprivedmumma · 24/12/2018 04:09

I conceived my daughter 2 days before my period. It's rare but it does happen. If you don't want to get pregnant then use protection. It's as simple as that.

LoreleiPorelei · 24/12/2018 05:11

YABstupid

RightOcciputAnterior · 24/12/2018 06:26

If your cycle is off one month and you ovulate late, you could get caught out. Talk to your doctor or family planning clinic - progesterone-only contraception is usually OK for people with a high blood clot risk. Or you could try a copper coil. I had one until I removed it to TTC, and I loved it - no hormones at all, and my periods weren't massively different from normal.

I don't see an issue with what you're doing but you need to be better at tracking your cycle. I've been using Natural Cycles for a year, including ovulation tests and know exactly when I ovulate. I also take into account how long sperm stays inside me for etc. If you are going to use this sort of method you need to be much more scientific about it and not rely on feel.

Ansumpasty · 24/12/2018 07:22

It completely depends on how well you know your body. I know exactly when I’m ovulating as I have very clear symptoms. I can then count 12 days and know that I will come on my period exactly then. I also get awfully sore boobs before my period, which confirms to me that I’m due on.

I could take the chance with no fear of getting pregnant, so to me, YANBU.

BlueJava · 24/12/2018 07:26

I really don't want another DC, I wouldn't use your method - it's too risky imo.
