to wonder if a second referendum is a good idea?

The Sunday Times are running a headline that the PM's team are planning one. Part of me thinks it's a good idea, part of me thinks that the country has already voted and can't afford another referendum.

I don’t know. Ken Clarke thinks not and I trust his judgement.

It’s true that it would be better if Parliament reasserted itself properly, but they don’t seem to have the courage to do it.

ButteryParsnips · 15/12/2018 23:02

It's not that it doesn't have downsides, more that it surely has to be better than the current disaster. We can vote knowing much more about the real future scenarios this time.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 15/12/2018 23:04

No.

WAY.

We are leaving ... End of. Preferably with no deal.

As far as I'm concerned, the EU can fuck off. Horrible controlling bunch of bullying bastards.

Roll on next March.

CantThinkOfNameOops · 15/12/2018 23:05

Depends how you look at it. Yes it's a good idea in the sense that it would probably clean up some of this mess but in the other hand you have to think about democracy. What was the point in the first referendum and what's the point in voting in any future election if the government can just choose not to accept the outcome

Marriedwithchildren5 · 15/12/2018 23:06

No. We're looking unstable as it is!

SweetSummerchild · 15/12/2018 23:08

No.

I can buy into a ‘people’s vote’ on the Brexit deal, but only if ‘remain’ is not an option.

We had a referendum and Leave won. We should leave.

I prefer the idea of a messy Brexit compromise over the idea of some horrible populist party taking control over our government in 10-15 years’ time because a significant percentage of our population feel betrayed over the ignoring of their leave vote.

I voted remain. We lost. I concede.

BubonicWoman · 15/12/2018 23:08

No. It was a people's vote that got us into this message in the first place

MakeAHouseAHome · 15/12/2018 23:10

FFS NO!!! We had a vote and people wanted to LEAVE! Bloody get on with it. Preferably with no deal.

cheeseonion · 15/12/2018 23:10

I voted remain, think the current deal is terrible and highly doubt Labour could get a vastly better option. Am highly concerned for -what feels inevitable now- a no deal exit ...

But the idea of a second referendum doesn't sit right with me.

I don't have the answers but it's a complete mess with no silver bullet at this point

wondering1101 · 15/12/2018 23:13

What was the point in the first referendum

It was advisory and non binding, but sold to people as binding. By other people with enough money to cushion them from any fall out. Not so the rest of us.

brizzledrizzle · 15/12/2018 23:14

I voted remain as well but democracy is democracy...if the vote was fairly conducted without influence from other countries.

DustyMaiden · 15/12/2018 23:15

Yes. anything to reverse this situation.

CraftyGin · 15/12/2018 23:16

Anything to stop Brexit.

Ninoo25 · 15/12/2018 23:16

Yes. A vote on the terms. Now we know what the deal is we can all make an informed decision without listening to the bullsh*t pedalled by both sides. I personally think we should have one and there should be 3 options:

  • leave with deal
  • leave without deal
  • remain

Saying it is undemocratic to have another vote is a load of rubbish as we now know exactly what we’d be voting for (no matter what anyone says unless they’re Mystic Meg they couldn’t have known what the deal would be last time round, also a lot of concerns raised by people who voted to leave have not been addressed by this deal)

TreaterAnita · 15/12/2018 23:19

At this point I would probably prefer a soft as possible Brexit (which is what there was a mandate for all along really, given that 48% Of voters didn’t want to leave at all). So Norway I suppose. But if that’s not on the table what other option is there? May’s deal won’t get through parliament. Not will no deal (which will reignite The Troubles, and if you think that’s an acceptable price to pay for a blue passport then you’re a cunt). So the electorate either has to tell Parliament to accept May’s deal or it gets to change its mind. I don’t see how that’s a huge problem, but I worry that the Brexiteers (and their Russian bots) will actively try to create civil unrest.

Singletomingle · 15/12/2018 23:20

Can only see this being a disaster 3 alternatives deal, no deal or stay. A vote for stay infuriates original leave voters. A deal vote seems unlikely and a no deal vote which may not even be an option will just further infuriate remainers

WelcomeToGreenvale · 15/12/2018 23:20

Yes to another referendum. Not because I voted remain but because of how the leave campaign lied throughout.

Kintan · 15/12/2018 23:21

I don’t get why people say ‘leave won’ as a reason to not have another referendum two years later after more facts about what leaving really means have emerged. Democracy doesn’t mean a one time vote that has to be stuck by no matter what. If people really think like that how can they justify overturning the vote in the 70’s that saw us becoming part of the EU?

Singletomingle · 15/12/2018 23:32

I voted remain to avoid world war 3 I'm assuming remain lied to me? Conservatives won the last election but lets have another just to be sure!

Deadbudgie · 15/12/2018 23:37

No. If we had a vote and remain won, presumably we could have another vote in 3years time, then 3 years after that abc so on?

AGHHHH · 15/12/2018 23:38

I don't know.

To have a second referendum seems ridiculous. We voted. We need to stick with it.

But on the other hand I feel we were either missold what brexit would mean for everyone or many misinterpreted it or voted due to misconceptions... Meaning it wasn't an accurate vote.

But I guess that can happen with any kind of voting.

I just don't know!

Lord

cardibach · 15/12/2018 23:42

Conservatives sort of won the last election. Which was a second check after they won the one before that. We all get to vote again in a couple of years. Using general elections as an example of wh6 we shouldn’t vote again on an issue is batshit. We rerun those babies all the time.
