to wonder if a second referendum is a good idea?

The Sunday Times are running a headline that the PM's team are planning one. Part of me thinks it's a good idea, part of me thinks that the country has already voted and can't afford another referendum.

If Mrs Brown's Boys being voted the Best Sitcom of the 21st Century has taught me anything, it's that the general public shouldn't be allowed to vote for stuff.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/12/2018 07:12

But the vast majority of Labour MP’s supported having a referendum

Without debate all MP’s that supported the referendum through parliament are guilty of this every single one of them

And as for those who voted to trigger Article 50 and have since been vocal about having a second referendum Hmm clearly looking after their best interests which is themselves and this is on both sides of the house

larrygrylls · 16/12/2018 07:13

There is plenty of time.

Brussels want us coming back with our tail between our legs and will facilitate it.

floribunda18 · 16/12/2018 07:14

I also don't think remain would win in a second vote. Remain lost when the alternatives were "stay" or "go". A vote with three alternatives will split the vote further, even though some people have changed their minds. Voters have changed their minds in both directions. I just feel it would be inconclusive and even more likely to land us with a hard Brexit scenario.

surferjet · 16/12/2018 07:15

Some remainers ( the really vocal ones ) haven’t done themselves any favours by showing themselves up for what they really are - intolerant, bitter, & spiteful - disgusted by the poor & the lower working class for daring to disobey their masters, disgusted by anyone who isn’t university educated or over 50 - even though the vast majority of very vocal remainers are 55+ if they’re a day.
So bring on another referendum - leave will win by an even bigger majority.

floribunda18 · 16/12/2018 07:20

leave will win by an even bigger majority

Unlikely as the question would not be leave or remain, it would be deal, no deal, remain. The result would be inconclusive.

icklekid · 16/12/2018 07:21

I'd like another referendum. It's been proven in court the leave campaign was illegal. We now know the terms of the deal. We should be able to decide deal, no deal or remain.

surferjet · 16/12/2018 07:22

If there’s going to be a 2nd referendum - which I doubt there will be anyway - the question should be.
Leave, knowing what you now know.
Or remain.
That’s it.

borntobequiet · 16/12/2018 07:25

So who are these vocal, intolerant, bitter, spiteful Remainers who are disgusted by so many things?
Because I can’t think of any. Unless you mean me! I am over 55, so you probably do, Surfer.
Do a search on my username and you will see the bile pouring out. Or possibly not.

Deadbudgie · 16/12/2018 07:26

Nino. At what point do you think a three way vote that will split the leave vote is acceptable? If there is a referendum the only choices on the ballot card would be leave with no deal leave or with mays deal. If you want a three way referendum we could stick leave with Norway plus (that’s about as close to staying remainders will get and personally I think the whole negotiations have been set up to push us down this route- at least we would be exempt from the ever closer union)

MaisyPops · 16/12/2018 07:27

I think the original referendum should have been:
Option 1 - remain
Option 2 - this is the Brexit deal
Clarity on both sides of what we are voting for. I also think major constitutional change should have had a 2/3 majority on the vote as well.

But we are where we are and instead what we had was:
Option 1 - remain
Option 2 - Brexit means Brexit but might involve control of free movement and might involve tariffs and we might stay part of the customs union but then that might involve accepting some free movement. Money on sides of busses and 4 different versions of Brexit depending on who is being interviewed. Anyone who tells us there's no clarity is part of project fear. Hard Brexit, soft Brexit, the people have had enough of experts Brexit.
Literally you could ask 60 people what brexit they were voting for and get 60 different answers.

Consequently, I think there should be a second referendum with 3 options:
Remain
Brexit no deal
Brexit deal

That way it's clear what we are all voting for.

borntobequiet · 16/12/2018 07:27

Actually, I’ve just been a bit bilious about my ex Blush. But that’s perfectly reasonable.

Silkie2 · 16/12/2018 07:32

Someone on the radio was saying this is the worst situation GB has benn in since blah blah blah we need another vote.
The world is in a bad way at the mo and if the Mother of all Parliaments decides that Naaaa don't like that democratically decided vote decision let's just run it again, it would seriously signal to the world what democracy means in Britain (nothing) and what democracy means in the western world. That's a scary situation imv.
We've been in worse situations 3 day week , oil crisis, world war or two.
Get it sorted MPs stop caring about your careers more than Demi racy.

surferjet · 16/12/2018 07:33

borntobequiet

I’ve never heard of you, but if you’ve spent as long as I have on the brexit boards you’ll know I’m right.

wondering1101 · 16/12/2018 07:38

Oops - I say papers, I mean fomentors of hatred.

Sadly too many people take the hatred and lies on board. Speaking to someone the other day - the EU have been so difficult and uncompromising in negotiations according to her (no they haven’t - the UK can’t keep the benefits of membership without the costs simply because it is - drumroll - the UK). It’s an entrenched almost religious point of view which is not going to shift fast.

All this ridiculous stuff about Juncker as well. The papers have done well Hmm.

I blame successive British governments which have done nothing to promote the EU in positive terms, or mitigate austerity and perhaps look at EU rules they could have used to manage freedom of movement - in areas where there was wage undercutting. They were too bloody lazy to do it.

So we will learn the hard way IMO. Brexit will happen and will hopefully be overturned by a future more open generation.

Namenic · 16/12/2018 07:38

I’m a remainer. I don’t get the leavers having a problem with another referendum. Different people voted for different versions of leave. Some leavers think remain would be better than no deal, I can see why some remainers might think no deal better than May’s deal. Politicians promise everything and come back with v little (look at labour’s policy on how they’d do the deal, and Tories no better).

Single transferable vote with ALL options.

lonelyplanetmum · 16/12/2018 07:39

So bring on another referendum - leave will win by an even bigger majority.

And if that's the case - that brings clarity and more consensus.

I noticed yet more of your unnecessary bile directed at those who support remaining in the bloc Surfer. Not sure why you are so bilious towards half the country.

• Many remain voters are under 55. I am! So you are wrong there. Many are over that age too. Not sure of the relevance of your comment there.

• Some of us, as has been pointed out to you before, are worried about the effect the certain further drop in the £ and GDP will have on others. I am concerned about those using food banks, those on dwindling disability benefit, children living below the poverty line, struggling families, single parents etc. I'm not convinced your great leaders of Leave Farage and Rees Mogg Etc have their interests at heart.

PlainVanilla · 16/12/2018 07:39

How about having one where all adult UK citizens, including those who live in the EU, are able to vote?

abbsisspartacus · 16/12/2018 07:41

They can't agree what fucking biscuits to have with a cup of tea how the hell are they going to "deliver brexit " when they are fighting amongst themselves so much

LAlady · 16/12/2018 07:42

Yes, this country is in a mess. Parliament is in a total impasse. I can't see anyway out but for another vote which I welcome for clarity.

surferjet · 16/12/2018 07:48

Not sure why you are so bilious towards half the country

Hahaha. & remainers are so understanding towards leavers.

Russiawithlove · 16/12/2018 07:50

Whether a second vote is a good idea or not there is no time left.

We leave in 14 weeks and the clock is ticking. Mps are too busy infighting.
In 8 weeks it will be panic stations.

I bet they all have their annual Christmas leave even though the clock is ticking. Says it all really.

Worriedwombat2015 · 16/12/2018 07:53

I don't know. I really really believe this should have never been a public vote in the first place. But it was, and here we are.

To vote again I feel undermines democracy. I voted remain, but we lost. Just because I don't like the result doesn't mean we get to go again.

The whole thing is a mess, the government look like incompetent bastards from the morning the result was announced. There was never a plan for this, and that's clear to the whole world.

Either way, we come off this badly. To leave without a deal would be terrible. To leave with the deal is going to piss remainders and leavers off. To stay after the vote would be undemocratic. It's a complete mess.

borntobequiet · 16/12/2018 07:54

I’ve been a regular poster on the Brexit boards (and on the odd thread that pops up outside those boards) since the referendum, if not before, and I can categorically say that you are wrong in the opinions you express on Remainers on those boards, Surfer.
Most Remainers acknowledge that people voted Leave for reasons that seemed, to them, to be valid at the time. However they point out that those reasons were neither factually correct nor founded on good evidence. That’s not being spiteful, it’s the generally accepted way a debate is conducted.
The odd Remainers who say something nasty are vastly outnumbered by Leave supporters launching personal attacks.

Namenic · 16/12/2018 07:57

STV would avoid splitting the leavers. From what I understnd it’s a bit like a contest where they work backwards from the least popular option, eliminating the lowest ranked candidate. The votes for the knocked out candidate get given to the next option people indicate on their ballot paper.
This goes on until u have 2 options and the one with the most wins.
