to wonder if a second referendum is a good idea?

The Sunday Times are running a headline that the PM's team are planning one. Part of me thinks it's a good idea, part of me thinks that the country has already voted and can't afford another referendum.

Unless you mean we're allowing Brexit to take place? How can we stop it? There have been marches and discussions, this is one.

Quietrebel · 18/12/2018 14:31

Write to your MP. Write to newspapers. Comment. Discuss. Make it clear that you disagree. There isn't much you or I can do but at least make your voice heard and always call out the BS.

BorisBogtrotter · 18/12/2018 14:34

"Germany is the only country in Europe who have a surplus of money instead of debt. "

Not true. Germany's debt to GDP is higher than that of other EU countries.

The myth of the German suppression of Europe through the EU is a load of crap.

FishesaPlenty · 18/12/2018 14:36

Just like the UK did to Ireland during the potato famine. Which is regarded as a crime against humanity.

No, not just like the UK did at all. Ireland was part of the UK at the time and its plight was ignored by the UK government. If we voluntarily leave the EU then why do you think they'd have any responsibility for helping us deal with our self-imposed problems?

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 14:38

"Basically Remainers are endorsing and justifying a crime against humanity."
What the fuck are you talking about @Augusta2012 . That's just silly nonsense.

PebbleDashed · 18/12/2018 14:38

Why on earth do you think it’s okay for the EU to want to defend itself but you condemn Russia and say they’re bad for doing exactly the same thing by seeking to prevent the EU from expanding to it’s border.

I didn't. I said there was bad blood on both sides on the edges of Russian influence. Some states have asked for European protection and joined the EU. Some are sitting it out on the borders, like the Ukraine. I said that it was delicate and that the EU needed it's own defence. Where did I make the simplistic comments about states being good or bad?

FishesaPlenty · 18/12/2018 14:44

Trade will be stopped unless there is an agreement to the contrary.

No it won't! Where on earth have you got that idea from? It'll be a bit more awkward to do business with customers in the EU but trade won't just stop. It's quite possible to do business with the EU from outside, it's just not as easy and you add potential extra costs and delays to the process.

PebbleDashed · 18/12/2018 14:46

OK, that might have been an over-simplification. But delays there will be, a-plenty.

BorisBogtrotter · 18/12/2018 14:55

Trade will be more difficult, especially services as there are very few ( if any ) WTO provisions for services.

Under WTO terms the UK ceases to benefit from hundreds of FTA, bilateral and multilateral trade agreements that the EU has, and will become less internationally competitive due to rising production costs and higher prices abroad.

I was out of the country at the 2016 ref. Now I understand why people had enough of the scaremongering. No one is going to starve in the event of no deal FFS. Augusta is quite right - if the UK were going to starve and the EU were withholding essential food supplies, that would be like the Irish potato famine. However, the UK won't starve.

Some more facts:

  1. Outside the EU, the UK manufacturing and farming sectors will be devastated. Tariff free imports anyone?
  2. Turkey is now far less likely to join as the UK will be out of the EU. The UK has always pushed for Turkish accession (thanks Boris). With the current right wing lurch across the continent, I think we can safely say no Turkey accession for at least a generation.
  3. Germany does have the largest influence in Europe. The Euro serves to benefit the exporting German economy and they pay the most into the EU budget. However, power is not all based on who holds the cheque book. Leavers were able to make an effective case of 'UK being 'walked all over' by EU'. It simply is not true. Both France and UK have always been crucial members cos they hold the bombs. The UK soft power has been amplified through EU membership, disproportionate to its GDP, and is one of the main reasons I'm very sad to see the UK leave. Walk away from power and influence? Not very patriotic.
MyOtherProfile · 20/12/2018 09:42

Your last two sentences are very interesting @TwinkleToes101 I've always thought we punch above our weight in terms of our influence in the EU and I'm sorry we will lose that.

wakemewhenitsallover · 20/12/2018 12:31

Yes we should have another referendum.

Or article 50 should be revoked until the leave campaign can get a plan together. Only when they have a plan for what they actually want to happen post-leave should they be able to invite the rest of the country to jump off the cliff IMO.

Kazzyhoward · 20/12/2018 13:58

The country voted to leave. We should have been preparing to leave for the last 2 years. Instead, we've had a Remainer running the country trying desperately to be one foot in, one foot out, and now time is running out and the country still doesn't have any direction and can't plan. What an absolute fiasco. If, and only if, there is any delay in leaving, it should be simply to finally make plans for being outside the EU, but with the ultimate end result of leaving.

bellinisurge · 20/12/2018 14:24

@Kazzyhoward leave said they had a plan and that it would be easy. Leavers ran the negotiations until it got tricky and they flounced. What more did you want?

This is all just something the public should never have been asked about. People were and are uneducated, arrogant and shallow thinking. Knee jerk, self-interested, ill informed reactions all over the place. You can’t fix that.

Buteo · 21/12/2018 09:03

The country voted to leave. We should have been preparing to leave for the last 2 years.

The EU has been planning (despite Leadsoms claims otherwise). In fact David Davis sent a letter to Theresa May saying he was going to ask the EU to stop planning for no deal as it was frightening UK businesses.

You couldn't make it up ..,

PebbleDashed · 21/12/2018 09:18

No one is going to starve in the event of no deal FFS.

People have already starved to death in the UK due to poverty. Many are at risk now, without the further pressures of Brexit. Homelessness is up and deaths due to homelessness are also up. Brexit will bring further economic pressures so of course there will be more deaths. Where are you getting your optimism from? Presumably you are in the lucky groups born into money who can take the hit, but many of us weren't.

The country voted to leave. We should have been preparing to leave for the last 2 years.
No. There should have been preparations and plans in place for a leave option before it was put to a vote. Triggering A50 without such plans was criminal.

bellinisurge · 21/12/2018 11:29

More people will go very hungry. Was that on the side of that fucking bus?

Supporting WA over No Deal.

turnipsaretheonlyveg · 21/12/2018 14:42

Food manufacturers are buying and renting warehouses to store a supply of food in case of a no deal but this costs a lot of money, they aren't going to be able to absorb all the costs of this so food will cost more, even if the no deal doesn't happen, because the costs will still have to be covered.
