Caught speeding again... 3rd time

Hello,
I am stupid. I got caught speeding on motorway which went down to 30mph for works in September. I am allowed to do driver improvement course. I have been caught by a van one month LATER. Yesterday I was on motorway again and I'm sure for a second I was driving at 33mph. I'm so ill and worried. I've been driving 18 years and never been been caught speeding.
I need my car for work, does anyone know if I could admit the third driving offence and pleas guilty but ask for a warning not the points?

Finally, hitting a human body at anything over 30mph is likely to cause damage/death.

Sounds like an excellent argument for lower speed limits, and for people to stick to them then.

FishesaPlenty · 13/12/2018 17:03

Errr, 2018 - 1997 is 21 years...you genius!

Yes, my maths error makes all the difference to your argument doesn't it?

You're an unpleasant, pedantic and argumentative little man.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/12/2018 17:05

It's not a new thing, it's been a government campaign for years. Have you not seen it?

I can't get exercised at speeding on motorways and the like. There are no pedestrians in the road. Residential areas, fair enough. I don't know why people speed on those roads. It's not the cameras, it's the very real likelihood of a child popping out in front of you that makes me crawl through.

+1 to that ....

I am a learner (sitting my test next week) and I have on occasion noticed the car creeping up to 31 or 32 in a 30, particularly when there is a gradual slope on the road so the car naturally picks up speed but you don’t really notice the slope so aren’t expecting it like you would going down a hill (IYKWIM). I just ease off and drop the speed back. My instructor said that even on test day you would be marked as a minor if it happens and you notice it quick enough and drop back down. It’s only if you are diving over for quite a while they would fail for it. I think the leeway is up the 33 before it counts as an automatic speeding fail.

If you have a satnav that tells you the limits just be wary because I’ve noticed they are frequently wrong. Last time I was out I noticed at least 3 roads with a different limit to the one the satnav said - it was possibly more but I rarely look at the speed limit displayed on the anyway so might have missed a few others.

I should also say all the side roads in my area have a 20MPH limit not 30 like in most areas. I would never drive that fast round steers with houses where kids could run out between cars and what not. It’s the larger roads with traffic lights on them that tend to be 30 where I live.

GiantKitten · 13/12/2018 17:44

ThanksForAllTheFish I don’t know if it’s ok in a driving test but I stick to 3rd gear in 30 limits - then you can hear when you start going faster Smile

A small child was killed near here when he popped out between 2 parked cars. It’s a 30 road & the driver was within the limit. Horrible for her Sad

Remembering about him helps keep me slower in residential areas, although it happened on an A road through town.

GiantKitten · 13/12/2018 17:45

Good luck btw!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 13/12/2018 17:58

GiantKitten - thank you. I obviously try my best to stay just at or below the limit and usually sit at 29, it’s just the odd occasion it creeped up to 31/32 and I do fix it right away. Ideally I aim to be just under on my lessons. My driving instructors car has a digital display so it’s easy to see. I tend to stick to 3rd in 30 with his car as it tends to jump up to 34 as soon as you go for 4th. My own car struggles with 3rd gear from about 28mph and really needs 4th or it roars like a beast. It’s a petrol with a 1.4 engine but my instructors car is a 1.6 deisel so I think that’s the difference. (His car is also much nicer and smoother to drive than mine but I will still be happy to be out in it on my own by next week - fingers crossed)

Strugglingtodomybest · 13/12/2018 18:30

Chesneyhawkes1 we've got one of those too. Ours has been converted to a motor home though but was originally registered as a HGV, aka a lorry.

Along with ABS, airbags, and seatbelts, speed limiters should be compulsory on all new cars. Certain ahead of colour-coordinated bumpers and mirrors.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 13/12/2018 18:38

DGRossetti - a new car should be limited to 30 mph? What?

ThanksForAllTheFish · 13/12/2018 18:39

Or is it new drivers? I don’t get what you are talking about.

dippledorus · 13/12/2018 18:44

Northern Ireland has R drivers - you are restricted to 45mph for a year after your test. And have to have an R plate on your car.

GiantKitten · 13/12/2018 19:33

I think DGRossetti means cars should have limiters which could be switched on to prevent speeding (a bit like cruise control)

ForalltheSaints · 13/12/2018 19:43

No sympathy from me at all. Some judge might be sympathetic and reduce any ban.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 13/12/2018 19:53

I think the 45 limit for new drivers is a bit of a strange one to be honest. If you live in a fairly remote location where you have to travel down NSL back roads to get to and from your house then surely that would be more dangerous? You would be doing 45 and frustrating the drivers behind you, risking being rear ended, holding up traffic flow etc.
Or have to avoid motorways and bypasses and go the long way round through side roads for work etc thus more stop/start driving which is worse for the environment, your car and fuel efficiency.

Also how do people get experience of traveling/ merging into fast traffic etc if even 50mph bypasses are off limits? Learners are now allowed to drive on the motorway in the U.K. (with a qualified instructor in a duel controlled car).

To be honest I have found as a learner out in the road loads of people speed. I won’t even like to guess how many people have wizzed past me when I’m driving the speed limit. You can also see people in car behind looking very pissed off at you when you are actually doing the limit of 30 or 40 on a road nutritious for people flooring it because it hasn’t got a speed camera. 🤷🏼‍♀️.

What ban?

EffOrf · 13/12/2018 20:11

Some people don’t bother to read the thread or the OP

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/12/2018 20:12

@Strugglingtodomybest indeed lorry, we know what we are taking about 😂

EffOrf · 13/12/2018 20:12

They just jump in with some stupid irrelevant comment.

IAmMumWho · 13/12/2018 20:24

I don't think this is a genuine AIBU post. OP have hardly replied. But on one I saw said about how much money the speed vans make! What does that actually even mean?

IAmMumWho · 13/12/2018 20:24

Has not have.

BentNeckLady · 13/12/2018 20:32

If you’re talking about the m5 elevated section I spend my life going up and down that motorway and the traffic flow is always around 33/35 I’ve driven it every damn day since the beginning of these never ending roadworks and haven’t got a ticket, nor do I know anyone who has.

I’m sure you’ll be fine. It’s aveage speed check anyway so one moment at 33 ain’t gonna hurt.

EffOrf · 14/12/2018 07:23

IAmMumWho

I did wonder, I have asked for clarification a couple of times on the second speeding offence as it didn't make sense.
