Caught speeding again... 3rd time

bellalou1234 · 12/12/2018 11:32

Hello,
I am stupid. I got caught speeding on motorway which went down to 30mph for works in September. I am allowed to do driver improvement course. I have been caught by a van one month LATER. Yesterday I was on motorway again and I'm sure for a second I was driving at 33mph. I'm so ill and worried. I've been driving 18 years and never been been caught speeding.
I need my car for work, does anyone know if I could admit the third driving offence and pleas guilty but ask for a warning not the points?

adaline · 12/12/2018 12:27

However, this is the 3rd time SINCE September!

Yes, but do you really count 3mph over the limit as speeding or dangerous driving? You can easily do that (probably without noticing) if you're coming down a hill into a 30mph zone, or speeding up to go up a hill from a 30 to say, a NSL zone.

bobstersmum · 12/12/2018 12:28

Calm down people blimey. Op you won't even get a ticket for 33.

Bunnymumma · 12/12/2018 12:28

Nobody is perfect but three times caught in such a short period of time? Jesus. Maybe you actually shouldn't be driving.

If you really need your car for work, it's best not to abuse it or the law.

brizzledrizzle · 12/12/2018 12:29

There's an easy solution - drive under the speed limit. Problem solved.

Tara336 · 12/12/2018 12:30

depending which county you were in you may be ok as some allow 10% some don’t. Personally I think it should be uniform across the country so at least we know where we stand. If you do speed awareness you won’t get points. It’s 12 points to be banned so you won’t use your licence. Stick your cruise control on if you have it which will save you worrying in future. Ignore all those clutching their pearls and being nasty, no you shouldn’t speed but I’m damm sure all of them at one poin5 in time or another will have broken the speed limit

Badtasteflump · 12/12/2018 12:34

This.

I can't say for sure I've never gone over the speed limit inadvertently, but in 30 years of driving I've never been caught speeding. But then I'm old fashioned - I make a point of sticking to the speed limits and drive as carefully as I can.

LikeLadyGodiva · 12/12/2018 12:37

Near me there are speed cameras on down hill sections of 30mph zones. There's rarely an excuse for speeding but sometimes it is easily done. I've never been caught btw but I have on occasion been confused by limits that have changed from 30 - 40 -30 mph in a short space of time.

Chanelprincess · 12/12/2018 12:40

Of course in MN-land nobody would ever go a whole 3mph over the speed limit hmm it's probably not even noticeable to most people!

On the two speed awareness courses I've been on, the majority of participants on both courses were women who admitted they weren't paying attention to the road because they were distracted by their children in the car.

CloudPop · 12/12/2018 12:43

Unfortunately I don't think you can request a warning instead of points - that's not how the system works !

Hidillyho · 12/12/2018 12:48

3mph you might just get away with it.
You can’t just admit the speeding in return for a warning.

Have you done the speed awareness course?
As you know, speed limits are there for peoples safety. Cars kill. I’m not being over dramatic or anything but they do (technically it’s the driver and not the car) . People forget this when they get into their cars.
It only takes a small lapse in concentration. I cannot say I have never been speeding or had a momentary lapse in concentration. I stopped driving for nearly a year when I got ill. My illness wasn’t one that could get my license taken away but I knew I wasn’t fit to do so

What is going to get you to stop speeding? As the awareness course didn’t make you stop. And the 2nd time being caught didn’t make you stop speeding.
I find cruise control helps. I set it to the speed limit and let the car do the driving. I miss not having it in our current car

GreatJobDino · 12/12/2018 12:51

You won’t get points for your first offence, you take the points or pay for the course, not both.

If you have received a fine and points for your second offence, you will receive the 3 points and have to pay around £100

The 3rd probably won’t count as on offence, it’s generally 35mph or above in a 30 zone which they fine you and give you points

So 3 points. Most people get 3 points in their lifetime over something stupid. I got mine taken off on the 11th of December after having them for 5 years, made no difference to anything at all

Just learn your lesson

Kazzyhoward · 12/12/2018 12:57

On the two speed awareness courses I've been on, the majority of participants on both courses were women who admitted they weren't paying attention to the road because they were distracted by their children in the car.

They should have been prosecuted for driving without due care - paying for a speed awareness course is a travesty if they weren't actually concentrating on their driving. The speeding is just a side issue.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 12/12/2018 12:58

If this is your 3rd offence then you’ll have 9 points (I presume) which won’t result in a ban.

If you get caught a 4th time you will lose your licence under the totting up law. This happened to me and because my last offence was in Scotland, their driving laws are different and it’s difficult to plead exceptional hardship, I lost my licence for 6 months Hmm

You can’t get a warning and no points by pleading guilty. if you’re guilty it’s points, and you can’t do another driving course for 3 years (unless you’ve done one on minor roads and your other offence was as a result of a smart motorway - but it’s not a given you’ll get offered it).

You can plead exceptional hardship via the courts if you will lose your licence but you have to prove it will impact someone else’s life (kids, dh etc) and not just yours by losing your licence.

Shit happens op. Mine was a stupid mistake, don’t beat yourself up too much, or let others do it for you.

loveka · 12/12/2018 12:59

There is always some cunt who comes on here and plays the 'shouldn't be driving' card.

3 mph over probably means 1mph over 30 which you don't get a ticket for!

That is not damgerous driving. I see lots of that, every day. Tailgating, not indicating, joining the motorway at 30. Those are the people who shouldn't be driving.

Caprisunorange · 12/12/2018 13:00

What daft replies. Stopping speeding won’t change the situation now Hmm

OP, it’s actually fairly common to be caught multiple times in a short space, especially as often people are caught out by the same thing (I know a man who sped through a temporary speed limit on the motorway and was picked up by 3 cameras in the one journey!)

I think worst case is you take all the points but it’s not enough to lose your license?

RoboticMary · 12/12/2018 13:04

Stop fucking speeding then. I hope you lose your license. My stepmother was killed by someone only a few miles over the limit, who didn’t see it as a big deal. Pay attention or don’t drive.

bellalou1234 · 12/12/2018 13:14

Yes I am able to do driver improvement course for firdrt one. Think a van caught me 2 weeks ago in a non residential area were the speed dropps from 40 to 30. I know totally my fault. Then again yesterday in rush hour traffic on the said bit of motor way. I have been well and truly remind how stupid I have been.

OP posts:
Yohooo · 12/12/2018 13:15

I'm a careful driver but I still think it's easy to get caught out by speeding. I've been caught twice in 35 years. Both my fault obviously but I don't feel I should never take to the roads again. If you drive a lot and you drive in new areas it can be difficult to see when speed limits change ( and yes I know what all the things to look for are)

I doubt you will get anything if you were only doing 33. I hope you don't.

Even if you do I'd be fairly sure you won't get your car taken off you.

YearOfYouRemember · 12/12/2018 13:15

Can anyone tell me the name of the speed app please as I've searched and can't find it. TIA.

PatriciaHolm · 12/12/2018 13:16

So you think a van caught you? Have you had anything through the post about it? You have to have been sent something within 14 days.

Calm down.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/12/2018 13:17

Speed limits are there for a reason. If you can't stick to them, then you're not safe to be on the road and deserve to lose your license.

Craft1905 · 12/12/2018 13:19

The leeway is 10%+2

No it isn't. That's a guideline, that no police force is obliged to stick to. You can be done for doing 71 in a 70 if they decide that's what they want to do.

JudgeRindersMinder · 12/12/2018 13:20

So what exactly did you learn from the peed awareness course?

Craft1905 · 12/12/2018 13:23

Speed limits are there for a reason. If you can't stick to them, then you're not safe to be on the road and deserve to lose your license.

It's licence.

And the licensing authorities don't agree with you. They say it's allowable to be caught 4 times in a 3 year period, and providing you do a speed awareness course on one of those occasions, you can still keep your licence. Only when you get caught 5 times, assuming 1 course and 4 three point endorsements, do you lose your licence.

Be ill and worried about the harm you can do to others by speeding
