To think nobody actually likes sprouts and it's a huge conspiracy

I did this thread last year but it got ruined by all the NASALTs that troll this forum. Everyone knows they are the worst part of Xmas dinner and take up valuable plate space which could have something tasty instead. Hoping this year that MN has come to its senses.

Random sprout fact:

Apparently, they used to be a lot more bitter but have had the bitterness bred out of them over the years.

So some of you who didn't like sprouts as a child might be pleasantly surprised if you try them again.

FitzChivalryFarseer · 02/12/2018 15:11

I agree ones bought on stalk are way better. Only seen Lidl do that this year?

Saw them in Sainsburys last week. And Waitrose would definitely have them.

Sprouts are awesome. Thankfully both DS agree with me, so after years of woefully steaming a small handful just for me, I am now back to doing loads and watching DH looking po-faced and disapproving of the sprout love. Grin

bobstersmum "I watched a programme once that was saying whether you will like sprouts or not is predetermined, it's something to do with the way you taste food, to some people they taste lovely, to some they taste bitter and awful, its not something you can change apparently"

Interesting, but it does not hold true in my case. I was a "super taster" as a child. All green vegetables except for peas tasted so bitter that they made me gag and vomit almost as soon as they touched my tongue! I became quite phobic about food. It wasn't until I was married that I started tentatively trying the hated foods - and discovered that they tasted very different from how I remembered them. To me, now, broccoli has almost no taste, whereas 50 years ago it was horribly bitter and felt as if it were burning my tongue. Strange, but true!

We all love them now and it only took about 5 years

over 60 years in here - the sprout appreciation gene still hasn't kicked in.

But then I have a working copy of TAS2R38.

The geneticists are asleep at the wheel though - they haven't identified the Parsnip acceptance genetic abnormality.

Metheven · 02/12/2018 15:40

I love them, especially with bacon and chestnuts. As I type I am eating a packet of brussel sprout crisps - yum.

driggle · 02/12/2018 15:46

I love sprouts. We all do. Last year we bought them on the stalk and they were delicious. Will be doing the same this year. Diced pancetta with them is a must.

fartfacemcfartfaceface · 02/12/2018 15:46

Yabu I look forward to them in my xmas dinner and we eat from all year round!! They have been bred to be much sweeter and less bitter than they were years ago!

Kenworthington · 02/12/2018 15:58

In a sprout lover too- but I only like the frozen ones - and I think that’s becaus fresh sprouts need to have had the frost on them before they taste nice. Anyway I like them boiled and dipped in salt. Yum!

Unfinishedkitchen · 02/12/2018 16:00

I love them!

eurochick · 02/12/2018 16:03

I like them. Boiled they are ok but a bit meh. Pan fried with bacon and chestnuts they are amazing. They need to have a bit of bite left and not be overlooked. Soggy sprouts are horrid.

snowflakealert · 02/12/2018 16:09

I LIKE SPROUTS.

Clionba · 02/12/2018 16:15

....... And I cannot lie!

maggienolia · 02/12/2018 16:20

Not a fan here, sorry.
DD1 calls them Shrek's bollocks.

BoglingToAswad · 02/12/2018 17:19

Sprouts are a problem as a class. People using fictitious individual examples contrary to that doesn't prove anything. Just means this board is infested with weird sprout trolls. Fact.

ABSOLUTELY!

I don't like sprouts and therefore nobody can possibly like sprouts. Anyone who has a different opinion to mine must be a troll.

I've never had sprouts, but I know I am right.

IJustLostTheGame · 02/12/2018 17:28

Yanbu. DH raves about them but only eats them at Christmas when cooked with bacon and other things to take the taste of the actual sprout away

LavenderBush · 02/12/2018 17:30

Sprouts are the haemorrhoids of Satan.

Bunnymumma · 02/12/2018 17:39

One of my fave vegetables ever! Can't get enough of them and my DH and I very much enjoy the farting competitions afterwards!

rainbowquack · 02/12/2018 17:42

I love sprouts. I even eat the cold leftovers the next day...

Racecardriver · 02/12/2018 17:43

I love them. I often eat just a bowl of buttered sprouts for dinner or fried cabbage!

userabcname · 02/12/2018 17:44

Sprouts are incredible. How dare you.

3luckystars · 02/12/2018 17:47

My taste has changed massively over the last few years, but I still love brussels sprouts!

Have you enough salt on them?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 02/12/2018 17:48

I don't like them. Although I see your sprout hate and raise you disliking Turkey, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake, too. My Christmas dinner is usually a beef or chicken roast with a few extras.

ivykaty44 · 02/12/2018 17:52

I love Brussels sprouts and used last years left over sprouts in pasta with blue cheese 😋
