To think nobody actually likes sprouts and it's a huge conspiracy

I did this thread last year but it got ruined by all the NASALTs that troll this forum. Everyone knows they are the worst part of Xmas dinner and take up valuable plate space which could have something tasty instead. Hoping this year that MN has come to its senses.

OP posts:
DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 02/12/2018 12:11

When DS3 was 3 we were at my mums for Christmas. It was the first time he’d had sprouts - at 7 he actively asks for them.

I’m with you though OP can’t understand why anyone likes them! Grin Even if my dad will insist if I tried them with bacon I’d change my mind (I have. I didn’t).

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 02/12/2018 12:12

I love sprouts and so do 2 of my children. The others hate them. But I've told him it's the law that says you have to eat them on Christmas Day and if you don't Santa will take your presents back.

Disclaimer: they are teenagers so just roll their eyes at me. I'm not being mean to Santa believing toddlers here! And I only give them a couple, and they always eat them so they can't hate them that much as they'd refuse (like they do with mushrooms)

Clionba · 02/12/2018 12:13

I just love sprouts! I have them all year round! Drizzled in butter, with fried bacon, mmmmm!

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 02/12/2018 12:17

No butter, no pepper, no bacon, just sprouts.

We like our sprouts naked.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 02/12/2018 12:17

It took me until I was an adult to know I liked them.

I grew up thinking sprouts were horrible but looking back once I'd tried them as an adult I realised that I'd never had them before. My parents didn't like them so they didn't serve them and created a culture of sprouts are horrible which as children without the capacity of true independent thought or outside influence we bought into. So without ever realising I'd never tried them I told myself they were horrible.

They stole from me valuable sprout eating years. I have had to come to terms with the deep emotional void such knowledge has left me with and I realise I may never truly be able to forgive such betrayal but I will try.

Notquiteagandt · 02/12/2018 12:19

I love sprouts at best of times. I love cabbage though too.

Weirdly this pregnancy I am craving cabbage so much. So think i will be over dosing on sprouts too this year.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 02/12/2018 12:20

I love sprouts and parsnips. Would happily not bother with potatoes or peas though - I don't dislike them but would replace them with sprouts and parsnips any day.

ChristmasWrappingTheWaitresses · 02/12/2018 12:23

Drogosnextwife

Definitely the green beans - I was trying to be healthy and had a large portion of lightly cooked green beans with a small amount of shepherd's pie. About 2 hours later I was so ill I thought I was going to die I could just feel the toxins going through my body. I did Google it and discovered that they are toxic when not cooked properly and it has now become my life's work to warn others so they do not go through the horrific night I went through.

AlaskanOilBaron · 02/12/2018 12:25

I'm afraid we love them, sorry. I shred mine in the food processor and pan-fry in pancetta. Delightful.

Grace789 · 02/12/2018 12:27

The taste of a whole cabbage in one mouthful, what's not to love Grin

Roasted with lots of brown butter and maple syrup. Mmmmm

Elphame · 02/12/2018 12:36

Sprouts are my favourite vegetable.

I do miss the older varieties which had a bit more "bite" to them. They are a lot sweeter and have less taste than they used to.

lau888 · 02/12/2018 12:38

ChristmasWrapping, your blog article appears to feature dried beans and pulses? Yes; those must be properly prepared and cooked. I’ve never been ill from eating fresh raw vegetables though - including peas and green beans.

And, back on topic... sprouts are gross. Only palatable if stir-fried with lots of seasonings to disguise them. x

AmIthatbloodycold · 02/12/2018 12:43

I'm still traumatised by the year of the office Christmas party when we sat down to the meal and they served turkey with ....,,,,broccoli

Not sprouts, but broccoli

There's was nearly a riot.

HundredMilesAnHour · 02/12/2018 12:48

I'm a total sprouts fan. Just had some with lunch actually. Sprouts are for every day, not just Christmas. Smile

When I was a student living in France, I got a taste for tinned sprouts. They're just delicious!!! Used to drag tins back to the UK with me but finally after years of doing that, you can buy them on Amazon:

www.amazon.co.uk/Daucy-Brussel-Sprouts-400-Pack/dp/B00AJRQRUG/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?keywords=brussel+sprouts&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1543754557&sr=8-6

Early this year I was in Denver (Colorado) a lot on business and sprouts are HUGELY popular there. Quite a few of the more upmarket restaurants do a sprout starter. I kid you not. It's sprout heaven. Every time I went I had to go to my favourite restaurant (Panzano) to have their huge starter of roasted sprouts with shredded apple (see photo). Sounds weird but it's amazing! And one of their best sellers. Denver is clearly a hotbed of sprouts enthusiasts. Smile

To think nobody actually likes sprouts and it's a huge conspiracy
SallyWD · 02/12/2018 12:49

I love sprouts! You won't believe this but I bought a bag the other day and my mouth was actually watering in the supermarket. I feel more excited by a bag of sprouts than I do a box of chocolates! Try cutting them in half and roasting them with olive oil and seasoning. Delicious!

Charley50 · 02/12/2018 12:49

I like sprouts!

LizzieBennettDarcy · 02/12/2018 12:52

We went to our local pub for a meal last week and they served kale sprouts.... they were absolutely amazing. Tiny little buds of kale packed with taste. I've just found some on Ocado but they're £3.99 Shock

My family hates sprouts and cabbage, so I don't often buy them but I do enjoy them myself.

HavelockVetinari · 02/12/2018 12:52

roasted sprouts with shredded apple

WTAF is wrong with Denverians?? FFS! Angry

80sMum · 02/12/2018 12:53

I love sprouts! They are one of my favourite parts of Christmas lunch. I would be happy with just sprouts and roast potatoes, with gravy! Grin

We have invited our grown up DCs and their families to Christmas lunch this year. I know for a fact that DS would be very disappointed if there were no sprouts.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/12/2018 12:55

Sorry, but I love sprouts. I'd happily fill three quarters of my plate with them.

AamdC · 02/12/2018 12:59

I love sprouts as does dh and apparently ds2 me and ds2 shared abowl of them last week .

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 02/12/2018 13:01

I love sprouts because they taste what I imagine green to taste like.

roundtable · 02/12/2018 13:14

Sprout lover here too and ds1 has inherited my love for them.

On holiday this year ds1 and I would prowl around the buffet station looking for the brussels and cabbage and then load up. I had to rein it in to just one meal after about a week though as eating mountains of brussels and cabbage for lunch and dinner makes your digestive system a little too enthusiastic. Grin
