To think nobody actually likes sprouts and it's a huge conspiracy

I did this thread last year but it got ruined by all the NASALTs that troll this forum. Everyone knows they are the worst part of Xmas dinner and take up valuable plate space which could have something tasty instead. Hoping this year that MN has come to its senses.

I could just eat a plate of sprouts now..... Grin

Justajot · 02/12/2018 11:06

We once served sprouts on cocktail sticks with a gravy dip as a joke canapé. They all got eaten. I think this means that they are broadly liked.

WildIrishRose1 · 02/12/2018 11:06

"Everyone knows" is a weak generalisation on which to base your argument.Grin

Roominmyhouse · 02/12/2018 11:07

I absolutely love sprouts. For a roast dinner I’m happy with them boiled but they are even more delicious oven roasted. Sprout haters need to try them that way, they taste so different.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/12/2018 11:07

I love sprouts. And boiled cabbage.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/12/2018 11:07

But not sprout. Sprout bad.

Bloomcounty · 02/12/2018 11:08

Oh dear, I love them too. I eat OH's share as well as mine, as he's a hater. I read somewhere that it's something to do with your individual taste receptors - some people have a much more sensitive palette to bitter tastes. It may be rubbish but the world does seem divided into lovers and loathers of sprouts, rather than "mm, they're okay I suppose" so it might be true.

Vanillaradio · 02/12/2018 11:08

I hate them and ds hates them. Dh however loves them and gets very grumpy when I suggest not doing them at Christmas. Even dh didn't like the sprout flavoured crisps we tried though!

MrsJayy · 02/12/2018 11:09

I'm amazed at the sprout love.
I just can't get past the memories of my mother boiling then to within an inch of their lives. They have never been part of my adult life and don't even get me started on parsnips.

WildIrishRose1 · 02/12/2018 11:11

Oops, can't get link to work. It's the fault of your genes, apparently.

bobstersmum · 02/12/2018 11:11

I love them! My mum sometimes used to do them mashed with butter, no idea why, but it was amazing sprouty mush. Only bad thing about sprouts is the resulting wind.

explodingkitten · 02/12/2018 11:11

Love sprouts! I cook then for a few minutes ("blanche them") then halve them and fry them with bacon in butter. My DH also likes his sprouts like that, he hates his mums sprouts, she cooks them to blubber, bleurgh!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 02/12/2018 11:12

I wonder what Theresa May's Brexit deal has to say about Brussels sprouts... They could be banned by Christmas next year.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 02/12/2018 11:12

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit it's the over cooking that ruins them. Steamed ones are delicious and shaved sprouts, fried quickly in bacon fat are divine.

MrsEddieVedder · 02/12/2018 11:12

Lurrrvvvee them!!

WoodpeckersAreWood · 02/12/2018 11:14

Sprouts are my second favourite vegetable

greycloudblackbird · 02/12/2018 11:14

I love sprouts too. Yum.

BehemothPullsThePeasantsPlough · 02/12/2018 11:15

Yesterday, for complex reasons, DS had a quirky supper of Italian sausages, potato waffles and Brussels sprouts. He ate all the sprouts first (and not because he hates sausages or waffles).

PlatypusPie · 02/12/2018 11:16

I love them, but just lightly steamed.Had some at a function last night which were soggy and over cooked 😠 The myriad ‘cook your sprouts with a twist ! ‘ recipes wheeled out on consumer media at this time of year are usually horrible.

I don’t quite see what the problem is in general though - if you don’t like them and want space for other things, then don’t take them ?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/12/2018 11:17

@MickHucknall I know but it's a trauma I can't get over.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/12/2018 11:17

Sprouts, like cauliflower, are the Work Of The Devil. Taking up valuable space that could go to the tastier, more deserving parsnip. And it’s not like I can’t cook sprouts, I can do them extremely well and bring great joy to those deluded people who weirdly like them. It’s just they still taste shit to me.

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 02/12/2018 11:17

I love sprouts. Agree you have to roast them though. They're also nice in the microwave with loads of butter and salt.

Last year i did my xmas sprouts with chestnuts and bacon and it was all gobbled up by everyone.

BroomstickOfLove · 02/12/2018 11:18

I love sprouts, but they are a bit of a faff to prepare so I tend to stick to great big uncute cabbages. My kids love cabbage but hate pea, which is just weird. And inconvenient, because frozen peas are the best easy veg ever.
