To ask how much you really drink?

I've been a bit miserable and found myself drinking more lately on an evening. Having noticed I've decided to really cut back but it got me wondering how much people really drink on a standard evening infront of the tv?

OP posts:
W0rriedMum · 02/12/2018 15:32

Half a bottle of wine, twice a week on average. On an occasion if we're out, I'd add a cocktail or spirit after the half a bottle.

I have a friend who binge drinks and I'm really worried about her. There might be a nice event planned and she gets so drunk she falls over or has to be taken home. She likes everyone to see her life as perfect, so I don't feel like I can say anything.

darkriver198868 · 02/12/2018 15:32

Can hand on heart say I haven't drank in 3 years.

writingsonthewall · 02/12/2018 16:37

I was drinking every night, started off with 1/2 glasses of wine or prosecco during the week, more like 4/5 at the weekends but was creeping up to maybe 3/4 on week nights and 7/8 at weekends. When I idly totted up the units and realised I was getting to 40-50 units a week I realised I probably needed to cut down.

For a couple of months now I’ve had 4 alcohol free nights each week and trying to be more conscious on the other nights. I’m still having between 10 and 20 units per week but that’s ok with me.

Firstworddinosaur · 02/12/2018 16:53

I love a drink but I hate being drunk. I have a small beer or wine at home most nights. Same if I go out to a pub or restaurant, just one drink. I love the way that one drink relaxes me!

Knittink · 02/12/2018 16:58

Interesting that you were expecting people to say a couple of glasses a night, OP. Do most people you know drink every night? I used to drink way too much in my twenties and early thirties, but even then never drank every night. These days I only drink on Friday and Saturday at the most, probably average 4 or 5 units per week.

SerenDippitty · 02/12/2018 17:00

I used to drink around 3/4 bottles of wine a week (on average) one on a Wednesday, 2 on a Friday and 2 on a Saturday. I am 6 weeks pregnant and on the first day of missed period haven't drunk anything, haven't craved alcohol.

I make that 5 bottles? Or did you mean three quarters of a bottle a week, 1 glass on Weds and two on Friday and Saturday?

dontforgettofloss · 02/12/2018 17:13

About a bottle a night, yes I know it's disgusting, bad for me, but at the moment it keeps me sane.
I don't ever feel drunk, just relaxed, I pay for it the next day though as my anxiety is pretty bad. I'm in a viscous circle, the wine helps my anxiety in the evenings, then in the morning I feel anxious, and look forward to the evening when I can have more wine Sad

Watsername · 02/12/2018 17:18

I don't drink at all.

Purpleartichoke · 02/12/2018 17:29

A couple of drinks a month.

HomeEdRocks18 · 02/12/2018 17:32

Nothing at home unless we have friends around, and then it's usually only a couple of small bottles of cider. If on a night out I drink a maximum of 4 drinks - rum and coke or cider. I don't like feeling drunk anymore

summerdazeahoy · 02/12/2018 17:35

I had a bottle of fruit cider last Friday, and that was my first drink since June. I can happily go months without it.

My partner is the opposite. He averages 1.5 bottles of red wine every night. Never less than one bottle. Sometimes, it's two.

starzig · 02/12/2018 17:43

Bottle of wine and about 4 to 6 double spirit on a Saturday night. Nothing other nights.

PlugUgly1980 · 02/12/2018 17:43

Nothing. OH drinks maybe one bottle of real ale once or twice a week.

Marshmallow91 · 02/12/2018 17:46

Nothing. I hate the stuff. Same with OH. Give me a big mug of tea any day Smile

stevie69 · 02/12/2018 17:51

Absolutely nothing. I do like an occasional cig though Blush

WildFlower2018 · 02/12/2018 17:53

One average sized bottle of larger or one can once a week. Probably more like once every two or three weeks really.

notsohippychick · 02/12/2018 17:57

stevie me too!! My livers ok but my lungs are probably ropey as hell! 😂

FurryDogMother · 02/12/2018 18:05

Well, it depends. Had 10 weeks with no alcohol recently (trying to lose weight) but last night I got through about half a bottle of vodka because my friend was round, and we were chatting. Today I felt like death, so am sipping the other half of the bottle. That'll be it until later in the week when my Christmas wine delivery arrives (from Virgin), and I may enjoy an entire bottle of my favourite red wine (and suffer for it the next day). Then nothing until my friend comes round again next Friday, and I'll have another half bottle of vodka, probably. Planning to have a couple of weeks off after that, because Christmas is looming - but all this is entirely normal for me - many weeks off, a few weeks on, a bit of excessive drinking, the occasional sip of something lovely, and I just don''t stress about it. I'm late 50s and have - so far - failed to have any issues with health etc. I'm probably doing lfe all wrong, but it's working for me so far!

eco1636 · 02/12/2018 18:07

I don’t drink. I think I’d be enormous if I did given how much rubbish I eat otherwise, but I’d rather munch down on some green and blacks on the sofa in the evening.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 02/12/2018 18:22

I had a load of wine last Sunday (friends came for dinner) the nothing until Thursday, where I had 2 pints of lager after work, half a bottle of prosecco and then a third of a bottle of red wine with my pal as we were getting ready to go out, then we had around six whiskey cocktails and several shots of mezcal.
Friday we had a bottle of prosecco and a bottle of red between two of us.
I've not had a drink since and probably won't until Thursday when I'm seeing friends.

TheToldYouSoDance · 02/12/2018 18:40

1 glass of prosecco before Sunday dinner and 2 glasses of red during/after. Used to drink at least 3 bottles of wine per week but it wasn’t doing my waistline any good. I’ll have the odd binge if I go out though, but that’s quite rare these days.

Oblomov18 · 02/12/2018 19:02

Most school mums I know drink tonnes.
Not this thread. Like a pp said: half a thimble every other Christmas.
We can drink 2 bottles of wine between 3 mums, easily.

Sometimes I don't drink for weeks. Other times 2 or 3 evenings in a week.

BloodyBing · 02/12/2018 19:25

Binge drinker here. I don't drink at home and with two young children I go out rarely.
When I do go out I drink 5+ pints of strong lager.
I get over excited.

BasinHaircut · 02/12/2018 19:42

It’s interesting how defensive the bigger drinkers get regarding how little others drink, as if anyone here is judging them.

The snidey ‘half a thimble’ comments are hilarious, but probably not in the way they are meant to be.

It’s also interesting in general how the whole ‘mums must drink wine once the kids are in bed’ came about. I don’t think my mum’s generation would have even considered it, but now it’s almost as if you are a social pariah if you don’t have something alcoholic to drink each evening.

Glowerglass · 02/12/2018 19:54

Nothing. My stomach can't take it anymore.
