To ask how much you really drink?

I've been a bit miserable and found myself drinking more lately on an evening. Having noticed I've decided to really cut back but it got me wondering how much people really drink on a standard evening infront of the tv?

At most, three drinks a week, one each on a different night. But to be honest, even that is too much for me. Even after one, I feel groggy the next day. I hate feeling groggy.

Gushpanka · 02/12/2018 12:28

I usually open a bottle of wine at the weekend to have with Friday night dinner. I usually finish it over the course of the weekend but not always. Drinking during the week is not routine - only if at a reception or special mela out or something like that.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 02/12/2018 12:30

Had nothing Sunday- Thurs then had almost a bottle of wine Friday night & the same Sat. Won't have anything during the week. I know I need to cut down!

foxyloxy78 · 02/12/2018 12:42

One or two glasses wine every three months.

Elphame · 02/12/2018 12:50

About 2 glasses of wine a night.

And I refuse to feel the least bit guilty about it.

mypoosmellsofcinnamon · 02/12/2018 13:13

Too much, every week I tell myself I'm going to only drink at the weekend and then fail. There's always a reason, work stress, something else worrying me, at the moment it's some upcoming medical tests, possibly something major so I'm in "fuck it" mode. All excuses and needs to change.

Roomba · 02/12/2018 13:16

I only drink occasionally and then only when I'm out or at someone's house for a social occasion. Then it's usually just one or two drinks, I don't get drunk.

I used to drink at home, a glass or two of wine probably 3 or 4 days a week with dinner. But my ex had a big alcohol problem (didn't drink every day but absolutely couldn't stop once he'd started) so I stopped buying alcohol and stopped drinking at home altogether. It was just enabling him really. Didn't solve his drink problem (though he has now been sober for a couple of years apparently) but it did leave me feeling healthier and with more energy in the mornings.

I'm certainly not teetotal now, but prefer to save it as an occasional treat, not a regular crutch, if that makes sense.

museumum · 02/12/2018 13:26

Probably two bottles of wine a week - Thursday to Sunday. Three or more nights no alcohol.

HJWT · 02/12/2018 13:28

I don't drink but I do comfort eat

Pinkprincess1978 · 02/12/2018 13:31

Used to drink a lot but tried to cut back.

Recently I might have three g&ts on a Friday and Saturday night, potentially Sunday and that it.

But I could easily sink a bottle of wine a night multiple nights a week plus a few g&ts. I'm not very good at moderation so if I had one glass of wine I would finish the bottle.

Amanduh · 02/12/2018 13:33

On a Saturday night, a fair few drinks! That’s the only night I drink though.

mamaduckbone · 02/12/2018 13:36

Very rarely during the week - usually a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday night and possible Saturday. More if we go out or have people round but that’s not very often because we’re lazy and a bit anti-social

Lookingforadvice123 · 02/12/2018 13:36

Much less since I had DC. Am pregnant now so none (boo!) but otherwise, one or two drinks on the weekend, unless I'm out at a party/wedding/meal etc. Then I will let my hair down and have a good skinful. Nothing in the week though, ever. And if just staying in on a weekend night with DH, never more than one or two.

MrsDeltaB · 02/12/2018 13:39

Ummm. Two bottles of 5.5% white wine. A night. Every night.

Purplejay · 02/12/2018 13:50

Around 30 units a week for me, usually wine or beer. I am trying to cut down but struggling with my marriage ending. I plan not to drink but then think fuck it! I have no more than half a bottle of wine on a week day but it mounts up over the week. I have been tracking it on an app. Planning to do dry January to get me out of the habit and in the meantime have a couple of days off per week.

Jaffacakebeast · 02/12/2018 14:48

Forgot to add, I drink much more in the summer, a fruity afternoon cider is far to regular in July/aug

SerenDippitty · 02/12/2018 14:50

I agree the temptation to drink is stronger in summer, when you come home from work on a hot day a glass of chilled white wine seems very tempting.

Grumpasaurus · 02/12/2018 15:01

I am also clearly on the wrong thread!

Sometimes I drink loads whilst out, and have a proper let-my-hair down session ending in shots and dancing and usually board games.

Other times I don't drink at all for ages; I am a social drinker so drinking at home doesn't really appeal to me. Also I can't drink wine due to migraines which would seem like the best choice to drink at home... so i guess that's a factor.

Other times I'll go out after work and have a g&t, sometimes two, or a pint.

So it really varies depending on what I'm up to. DH and I are very social even with a toddler and that seems to influence when I dronkZ

Lobsterquadrille2 · 02/12/2018 15:07

Nothing. I wish I could be the "glass of wine a night" person.

Years ago I could get through three bottles of wine a day, and didn't even seem drunk - it was a topping up process. Now the idea fills me with dread - for me, that is.

naicepineapple · 02/12/2018 15:12

I don't drink at home unless we have friends or family round for dinner/drinks or we're having a bbq.
I wouldn't occur to me to have a drink while watching tv in the evening, I do eat too much chocolate in the evenings instead.

cordeliavorkosigan · 02/12/2018 15:19

Obviously there are exceptions to this but these threads really have selection bias (as does any thread; I mean that people who are interested answer). And"desirability bias" where people want to give socially approved answers. I really think these threads are not at all a good reflection of drinking habits in the UK. People who can give answers they like and that they think we'll like are the ones who answer, and those who care ( who have thought about it, maybe to give up drinking)...

diwata · 02/12/2018 15:23

DH and I never drink at home if it's just the two of us. Bottles of wine, prosecco, etc. remain unopened unless we have guests, which happens a handful of times a year.

I do look forward to a G&T (one max) if we eat out at a pub or nice restaurant, and the same if I am out on a work dinner (3-4 times a year I go abroad for work and there is a run of 3 or 4 days going out with colleagues where I'll have a drink with them; but I don't have a drink by myself in the hotel).

Office Christmas party this year and maybe I'll have a couple of glasses of free wine.

Hmmmm is my life sad?

smackbangwhollop · 02/12/2018 15:26

A few glasses of wine a year. Blush As I get older I just cant handle alcohol. One/half a glass of red wine and I'm in a coma. 😳

ElainaElephant · 02/12/2018 15:27

Very rarely. I'll occasionally have a gin, maybe once every couple of months, if that. I got two bottles of gin for Xmas 2 years ago. They are not even half empty yet. And it hasn't just been me that had had some.

vixy1988 · 02/12/2018 15:30

I used to drink around 3/4 bottles of wine a week (on average) one on a Wednesday, 2 on a Friday and 2 on a Saturday. I am 6 weeks pregnant and on the first day of missed period haven't drunk anything, haven't craved alcohol.

Also, saying that, this year I have had 3 sober months prior to my wedding.
