Can anyone help? I'd quite like a constant stream of Graham Norton, Loose Women and TED talks with a touch of magic fm. Can anyone recommend anything?

OP posts:
TacoFlavouredKisses · 28/11/2018 11:41

Ooh following this (although a constant stream of Loose Women is my idea of hell).

I'm a true crime podcast fiend.

makeanewname13 · 28/11/2018 11:44

Ooh taco can you recommend any good true crime ones? I'm up to date with Casefile and They Walk Among Us but am on the hunt for a new one.

Oh and Cults is also good, if you're also in to that kind of thing Grin

DeeStopia · 28/11/2018 11:44

Do you have the Stitcher app OP? I love it, esp This American Life, Serial and Revisionist History.

Mumshotel · 28/11/2018 11:46

I know nothing about it either. Where do you even begin.

Chouetted · 28/11/2018 11:48

TED Radio Hour would be a good start?

Tunebeo · 28/11/2018 11:49

@DeeStopia, if you like This American Life then you will enjoy The Moth

TacoFlavouredKisses · 28/11/2018 12:17

Make I'm in EXACTLY the same situation as you - Casefile is my favourite and I'm so sad to be up to date with it. TWAU I'm just not as keen on... I think it's the pacing/length of episodes.

Canuckduck · 28/11/2018 12:25

Serial and S town are fantastic. Just getting into this American Life. Someone knows something is slow paced but good.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 28/11/2018 12:38

The Caliphate series is incredible - it's not easy listening by any means but it's amazing.

Another true crime podcast fan here 👋
Give Small Town Dicks, a listen. I don’t usually like discussion based pod casts, but this one is great. One of the hosts is the actress who voices Lisa Simpson, so it sounds a bit strange at first!

Knittink · 28/11/2018 12:47

I was a bit baffled by podcasts but really wanted to get into them. I got a podcast app on my phone (mine is 'Podcast Addict', but there are lots available). Then you just search on the app for what you're looking for, and it saves all the ones you've chosen and adds new episodes as they arise.

So far I have mostly selected foreign language podcasts, as I'm learning one foreign language and teach two others, but I want to look for others I mightfind interesting.

April241 · 28/11/2018 12:53

I’ve never listened to podcasts but would love to, especially as I’m starting a new job in the new year with a longer commute. Following for ideas.

AromaticSpices · 28/11/2018 12:55

Just go to your podcast app on iphone (or A-Cast) and search. Some suggestions here:

  • No Such Thing As A Fish (QI/trivia fans will love)
  • Happy Place (Fearne Cotton's podcast about how to be content, with guests)
  • Private Parts (quite fun, for any fans of Made in Chelsea cast, often have comedian guests or other reality stars)
  • My Dad Wrote A Porno (actually hilarious)
  • Under The Skin (Russell Brand, really interesting guests, v thought provoking)
  • Scummy Mummies (I was put off by the name initially but they're comedians more than 'mums' and are very funny and have interesting guests)
  • Reasons To Be Cheerful (with Ed Miliband and Geoff Lloyd, mainly current affairs but with a positive outlook, interesting guests - not ostensibly about politics so no pre-requisite to be aligned with EM's political stance)
  • Table Manners with Jessie Ware (if they have a good guest it can be interesting but this is hit and miss for me. Alan Car was hilarious)
  • Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness (Queer Eye) (the tone of this can change depending on the guest but mainly it's about US issues, often politics or recent movements, again can depend on the guest).
  • The Adam Buxton podcast (often highly recommended but I'm not such a big fan).
  • If you like Russell Brand there's his whole backlog of his XFM shows (with Matt Morgan) in podcast form which are so, so funny.
  • If you like comedian Richard Herring, his 'RHLSTP' podcast is brilliant.
  • The Guilty Feminist, also good.
  • The Infinite Monkey Cage with professor Brian Cox is v good. Science-y but accessible.
  • The Butterfly Effect was very interesting, about the world of porn.

If you find one you like and it's still going, you can subscribe to them. They'll then appear in your 'listen now' section when there's a new episode.

I listen to loads of podcasts Blush Grin

SilverySurfer · 28/11/2018 12:58

I seriously have no idea what a podcast is. I assume it's something you watch or listen to. Can you not just turn the device off?

AromaticSpices · 28/11/2018 13:02

It's audio only Silvery, so you just listen to it. You can have it playing as you would with music - can close/lock phone and it will continue playing unless you stop it using the screen or your headphones.

AromaticSpices · 28/11/2018 13:04

OP, there's a 'Ted Talks Daily' podcast, you just search for 'ted' and it comes up. There's a few different TED ones - business, society + culture, and technology.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 28/11/2018 13:07

If you're using iphone, you can browse by category which narrows the choice to things you're interested in. Select to search by shows not episodes so you're not seeing the same thing over again.

Can recommend:#

Finding Cleo (starts off as a missing person, goes much deeper than that)
Death in Ice Valley
Caliphate
First two seasons of Serial (really disappointed in the most recent)
Season 2 of Slow Burn about Monica Lewinski

DH likes one with Brian Cox - think it's called the Infinite Monkey Cage?

PiperPublickOccurrences · 28/11/2018 13:09

Oh and true crime fans - try "The Doorstep Murders" by BBC Scotland about an unsolved murder in Nairn. It's fascinating.

IrianOfW · 28/11/2018 13:20

Ooh I love podcasts.

favourites include

Lore - stuff about the mysterious and odd
Redhanded - murder podcast presented by two rihtrously angry and funny young women.
Casefile
Hypnogoria - wierd shit in general - really love this one.
We are alive - loooong audio drama about a Zombie apocalypse.
Unexplained - weird shit again (you have noticed that there is a theme)
The White Vault - audiodrama about a research station in the Artic.
No Sleep - scary stuff

loads more but I can't remember them all

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/11/2018 13:22

Another vote for the Scummy Mummies. Also Fortunately with Fi and Jane, Rutherford and Fry from Radio 4, Late night womans hour and have a look at the Radio 4 Comedy section.

Shoxfordian · 28/11/2018 13:25

I like a podcast

My favourite murder, especially the mini episodes with reader stories

My Dad wrote a porno

Happy face is good, its about the daughter of the happy face serial killer and their family life. Really fascinating and a great soundtrack

Ask a manager for work advice. Like her website too

Generation why if you like true crime

Heavens Gate on Stitcher is fantastic

babypsmum · 28/11/2018 13:35

You may like Freakonomics. I love true crime and just finished The Teachers Pet - enjoyed it.

RayRayBidet · 28/11/2018 13:35

I enjoyed You Must Remember This, it's about Hollywood in the 20th Century. I especially enjoyed the episodes about Joan Crawford and the Dead Blondes series.
S Town was good but kind of fizzled out at the end.
Serial, I got bored with.
History on Fire is interesting once you get past the 10 minutes of information about the sponsors at the start of the episode.
Criminal is sometimes good.

tobee · 28/11/2018 13:36

There's a whole podcast section on mumsnet.

I also belong to a Facebook group which is called Podcasts We Listen To.

You can google "recommend me a xxx podcast " inserting the area you're interested in. Often one podcast leads to another, the advertise each other.
